교회를 위하여 기도하라(Pray for the church!)

실화입니다. 스티브라고 부르는 한 기독교 지도자가 최근 비행기를 타고 여행 중이었습니다. 그는 두 좌석 건너편에 앉은 남성이 작은 카드 몇 장을 훑어보며 입술을 움직이는 것을 발견했습니다. 그 남자는 염소 수염을 기르고 갈색 머리가 희끗희끗한 교수처럼 보였고, 스티브는 그 남자의 나이를 50대로 추정했습니다. 스티브는 그 남자가 동료 신자라고 생각하고 몸을 기울여 대화를 시작했습니다. "뭔가 외우고 계신 것 같네요." 그가 말했습니다. "아니요, 사실 기도하고 있었어요." 남성이 대답했습니다. 스티브는 자신을 소개했습니다. "저도 기도를 믿습니다."라고 그가 말했습니다. "저에게는 특정한 임무가 있습니다." 수염을 기른 남자가 말했습니다. "그게 뭔데요?" 스티브가 물었습니다. "기독교 목사들의 몰락을 위해 기도하고 있습니다." "저도 확실히 그 범주에 속하겠네요." 스티브가 말했습니다. "제 이름도 그 목록에 있나요?" "제 명단에는 없습니다." 그 남자가 대답했습니다. 사탄의 추종자들은 쉬지 않고 교회의 몰락과 목사들의 타락을 위하여 사탄에게 기도하고 있습니다. 그들은 사탄의 악한 뜻을 분명하고 알고 있으며 그 뜻을 이루기 위하여 기도하는 것입니다. 하지만 오늘날 많은 그리스도인들은 이를 알지 못하고 영적인 깊은 잠을 자고 있습니다. 기도의 무릎이 없습니다. 예수님이 그의 십자가 죽음을 통하여 열어 놓은 길을 따라 은혜의 보좌 앞에 나아가 기도하지 않습니다. 이제 우리를 더 이상 교회와 그 지도자를 위한 기도를 미룰 수 없습니다. 오늘날 교회가 진정으로 필요로 하는 것은 어떤 계획, 프로그램, 회의, 집회가 아니라 뜨겁게 기도하는 사람들입니다. 초기 아프리카의 기독교 개종자들은 진지하고 규칙적인 개인 신앙생활을 했습니다. 그들은 각각 덤불 속에 별도의 장소를 마련하여 하나님께 마음을 쏟아 부었다고 합니다. 시간이 지남에 따라 이 장소로 가는 길은 잘 마모되었습니다. 그 결과 신자 중 한 명이 기도를 게을리하기 시작하면 다른 신자들에게도 곧 알려졌습니다. 그들은 태만한 사람에게 "형제여, 길에 풀이 자랍니다."라고 친절하게 상기시켜 주었습니다. 혹시 여러분이 기도로 나가는 길에 잡초가 무성하지는 않은지요? 우리 모두 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대함으로 나아가야 합니다. 우리의 마음을 하나님 아버지 앞에 쏟아 놓으며 교회를 위하여 기도해야 합니다. 교인들이 모두 그리스도와 하나되어 생활하도록 기도해야 합니다. 그리스도의 사랑으로 속사람이 강건해 지도록 기도해야 합니다. 교회가 하나되어 세상에 하나님의 사랑과 지혜을 드러내도록 기도해야 합니다. 하나님은 우리를 기도를 통하여 그분의 뜻을 이루시고 그분을 영광을 드러내시기 때문입니다. 

True story. A Christian leader -- we'll call him Steve --was traveling recently by plane. He noticed the man sitting two seats over was thumbing through some little cards and moving his lips. The man looked professorial with his goatee and graying brown hair, and Steve placed him at fifty-something. Guessing the man was a fellow believer, Steve leaned over to engage him in conversation. "Looks to me like you're memorizing something," he said. "No, actually I was praying," the man said. Steve introduced himself. "I believe in prayer too," he said. "Well, I have a specific assignment," said the man with the goatee. "What's that?" Steve asked. "I'm praying for the downfall of Christian pastors." "I would certainly fit into that category," Steve said. "Is my name on the list?" "Not on my list," the man replied. Satan's followers are unceasingly praying to Satan for the downfall of the church and the corruption of its pastors. They are aware of Satan's evil will and they are praying to fulfill it. But many Christians today are unaware of this and are in a deep spiritual slumber. There are no knees of prayer; no coming to the throne of grace through the path Jesus opened by His death on the cross. We can no longer put off praying for the church and its leaders; what the church needs today is not any plans, programs, meetings, or rallies, but people praying fervently. Early African converts to Christianity were earnest and regular in private devotions. Each one reportedly had a separate spot in the thicket where he would pour out his heart to God. Over time the paths to these places became well-worn. As a result, if one of these believers began to neglect prayer, it was soon apparent to the others. They would kindly remind the negligent one, "Brother, the grass grows on your path." Is your path to prayer perhaps overgrown with weeds? We all need to come boldly to the throne of grace. Pouring out our hearts to our Heavenly Father, we should pray for the Church. We should pray that all members of the Church would live in unity with Christ. We should pray that we would be strengthened in our inner man by the love of Christ. We should pray that the Church would be united to reveal God's love and wisdom to the world, for God uses our prayers to accomplish His will and display His glory.
