교회의 함께함(Togetherness of the church)

교회는 함께 하는 공동체입니다. 함께 하지 않는 교회는 살아 있는 믿음 공동체가 될 수 없습니다. 하나님의 말씀은 “서로 위로하라,” “서로를 위해 기도하라,” “서로를 섬기라,” “서로 존중하라,” “서로 사랑하라”고 말씀합니다. 상대는 우리가 섬기고 위로하며 사랑할 대상입니다. 그런데 우리가 이기적인 개인주의에 빠져 교회의 함께함의 원칙을 무시한다면 우리는 잠시 홀로 편안함을 느낄 수는 있지만 진정한 행복을 누릴 수는 없을 것입니다. 또한 참 사람됨, 곧 공동체의 일원으로 이웃과 더불어 살아가는 즐거움을 놓치게 될 것입니다. 교회는 “너와 내가” 함께 하는 믿음 공동체입니다. 줄루족의 인사말인 우분투는 공동체에서 인간의 친절이 얼마나 중요한지를 표현합니다. “네가 있기에 내가 있다”는 뜻입니다. 사실 우분투라는 인사말은 줄루어 "우문투 응구문투 응가반투"의 일부로, 말 그대로 사람은 다른 사람을 통해 사람이라는 뜻입니다. 우분투는 공동체라는 개념이 사회의 구성 요소 중 하나인 아프리카 철학에 뿌리를 두고 있습니다. 이 우분투의 본질은 너와 나, 우리가 함께 하나의 공동체라는 것입니다. 이 철학은 남아공 흑인들이 인종적, 사회경제적 경계를 넘어 인종차별정책의 벽을 허무는 데 도움이 되었습니다. 우분투를 통해 흑인들은 자신들을 억압하던 백인들에 대한 증오심을 버리고 사랑으로 포용할 수 있었습니다.  우분투의 정신은 마음을 굳게 닫고 있던 백인들을 움직여 함께 조화롭게 살아갈 수 있도록 도왔습니다. 남아프리카의 노벨상 수상자인 데스몬드 투투 대주교는 우분투에 대해 다음과 같이 설명합니다: “이것은 나의 인간됨이 당신의 인간됨과 떼어질 수 없이 연결되어 있다는 사실을 말해줍니다. 내가 공동체의 일원이기에 사람인 것입니다. 우분투는 전체에 대하여, 긍휼에 대하여 말합니다. 우분투 사상을 가진 사람은 다른 이들을 환영하며, 친절하고, 따뜻하며 후하고, 기꺼이 가진 것을 나눕니다. 그러한 사람들은 다른 이들에게 개방적이고 도움을 주며, 약점을 기꺼이 노출시키며, 다른 이들을 긍정하고, 다른 이들이 유능하고 선하다고 질투로 인해 위협을 느끼지 않습니다. 이들은 더 큰 무리에 속해 있음을 앎에서 오는 적절한 자기- 확신을 가지고 있습니다. 이들은 다른 이들이 모욕을 당하고 압제를 당할 때 자신들이 줄어듬을 압니다. 또한 다른 이들이 마땅히 받아야 할 대우를 받지 못할 때 자신들이 줄어듬 압니다. 우분투의 미덕은 사람들에게 회복력을 주어 그들을 비인간화하려 하는 모든 시도에도 불구하고 살아 남아 여전히 사람됨으로 일어납니다.” 우리는 혼자서는 살 수 없습니다. 우리는 함께 조화롭게 살기 위해 다른 사람들이 필요합니다. 교회 공동체에서 다른 사람을 배제한다면 우리는 외톨이가 될 것입니다. 우리는 함께 사는 법, 즉 사랑을 배워야 합니다.

The church is a community that comes together. The Word of God tells us to "comfort one another," "pray for one another," "serve one another," "honor one another," and "love one another." The other person is the one we are to serve, comfort, and love. But if we indulge in selfish individualism and ignore the church's principle of togetherness, we may feel comfortable alone for a while, but we will not be truly happy. We will also miss out on true personhood, the joy of living with our neighbors as part of a community. The church is a "you and me" community of faith. Ubuntu, a Zulu greeting, expresses the importance of human kindness in a community. It means, “I am, because you are.” In fact, the greeting Ubuntu is just part of the Zulu phrase “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu,” which literally means that a person is a person through other people. Ubuntu has its root in African philosophy, where the idea of community is one of the building blocks of society. The essence of this Ubuntu is we, you and I together, are a community. This philosophy helped South African blacks cross the racial, socio-economic lines and break down the walls of apartheid. It led them to bury the hatchet and lovingly embrace those whites who used to oppress them.  The spirit of Ubuntu moved the hard-heartened whites and helped them live together in harmony. The South African Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu describes Ubuntu as follows: “It is the essence of being human. It speaks of the fact that my humanity is caught up and is inextricably bound up in yours. I am human because I belong. It speaks about wholeness, it speaks about compassion. A person with Ubuntu is welcoming, hospitable, warm and generous, willing to share. Such people are open and available to others, willing to be vulnerable, affirming of others, do not feel threatened that others are able and good, for they have a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that they belong in a greater whole. They know that they are diminished when others are humiliated, diminished when others are oppressed, diminished when others are treated as if they were less than who they are. The quality of Ubuntu gives people resilience, enabling them to survive and emerge still human despite all efforts to dehumanize them.” We can’t live by ourselves. We need others to live together in harmony. If we exclude others from our church community, we will be left alone. We must learn to live together, which is love.
