교회의 일치에 대한 실천적 지식(Practical knowledge of the unity of the church)

위대한 흑인 교육자이자 사회학자, 역사학자인 부르가르트 뒤부아는 피스크, 하버드, 베를린 대학에서 공부를 마친 후 미국 흑인에 대한 진실을 과학적으로 면밀히 조사함으로써 미국 흑인의 상태를 변화시킬 수 있다는 확신을 가졌습니다. 그래서 그는 연구를 진행했습니다. 그의 연구는 완벽했고 그래프와 차트는 흠잡을 데가 없었습니다. 몇 년을 기다렸지만 개혁의 움직임이 조금도 보이지 않자 뒤부아 박사는 '진실이 있다고 해서 진실이 수용되는 것은 아니다'라는 진실을 받아들여야 했습니다. 여러분과 제가 성령을 통해 교회의 일치를 위한 그리스도의 신비에 대한 지식을 받았다고 해서 우리가 교회의 일치를 위해 그리스도의 신비에 대해 알고 있는 것을 반드시 행동으로 옮긴다는 보장은 없습니다. 우리는 성령을 통해 동기 부여와 힘, 능력을 얻기 위해 그리스도께로 나아가야 합니다. 그리스도께서는 우리가 구원받고 그분 안에서 하나가 되게 하기 위해 죽으셨습니다. 이 복음을 믿으십니까? 마틴 로이드 존스는 이렇게 말합니다: “겨 더미와 나무의 차이는 무엇일까요? 생명의 유무입니다. 겨 더미에는 생명이 없고 아무것도 자라지 않습니다. 그러나 나무는 생명이 있고 자랄 수 있습니다. 겨는 시간이 지날수록 상태가 더 나빠집니다. 바람에 이리저리 날리기도 하고 먼지와 진흙이 달라붙기도 합니다. 온갖 것들이 달라붙지만 겨의 상태는 개선되지 않습니다. 나아지는 법이 없습니다. 그런데 성경은 죄에 빠진 사람들에 대해 진단을 내립니다. 그들이 무슨 일을 하는지는 중요하지 않습니다. 그들은 나아지지도 않고 자라나지도 않습니다. 그리스도 안에 잇는 하나님의 진리를 알지 못하면 처음 있던 그 자리에서 끝내 벗어나지 못할 것입니다. 아닙니다. 오히려 처음보다 훨씬 못한 상태가 될 것입니다. 방대한 지식과 학식, 그것이 여러분을 어디로 향하게 합니까? 사는 데 그것이 정말 도움이 됩니까? 여러분을 죽음에서 생명으로 옮기는 데 도움이 됩니까? 영원에 한 줄기 빛이라도 비추어 줍니까? 그러나 하나님 뜻과 달리 나무처럼 되지 못하고 겨처럼 썩을 수 밖에 없는 우리를 위해 하나님의 아들이 대신 죽으셨습니다. 그분은 우리를 구원할 충분한 능력을 가지고 계십니다. 우리는 복된 성령을 통해 생명을 주시고 새롭게 창조하시는 하나님의 능력을 알게 될 것입니다. 생명이 있는 나무처럼, 그리스도인은 하나님을 아는 지식에서 자라고 은혜에서 자랍니다.” 우리는 교회의 일치에 대한 그리스도의 비밀을 아는 특권을 누리고 있습니다. 이 특권은 우리를 하나님과 교회의 다른 사람들 앞에서 겸손하게 만들어야 합니다. 성령을 통해 그리스도를 믿는 모든 신자가 하나되는 신비를 아는 특권을 하나님의 영광을 위해 적절히 사용합시다.

Burghardt DuBois, the great black educator, sociologist, and historian, upon completion of studies at Fisk, Harvard and the University of Berlin, was convinced that change in the condition of the American black could be effected by careful scientific investigations into the truth about the black in America. So, he proceeded. His research was flawless and his graphs and charts impeccable. After waiting several years and hearing not the slightest stir of reform, Dr. DuBois had to accept the truth about Truth: Its being available does not mean it will be appropriated. The fact you and I have received the knowledge of the mystery of Christ for the unity of the church through the Holy Spirit doesn’t necessarily guarantee that we will act on what we know about the mystery of Christ for the unity of the church. We must turn to Christ for motivation, strength, and enablement through the Holy Spirit. Christ indeed died for us to be saved and be one in Him. Do you believe in this gospel? Martyn Lloyd Jones said, What's the difference between a chaff heap and a tree? It's the presence or absence of life. A pile of chaff is lifeless and nothing grows on it, but a tree is alive and can grow. Chaff deteriorates over time. The wind blows it around and dust and mud sticks to it. All kinds of things stick to it, but the condition of the chaff doesn't improve. It doesn't get better. But the Bible gives a diagnosis for people who are in sin. It doesn't matter what they do, they don't get better, they don't grow. If they don't know the truth of God in Christ, they won't end up where they started. No, they'll end up even worse off than they started. Vast knowledge and erudition, where does it get you? Does it really help you live? Does it help you pass from death to life? Does it shed any light on eternity? But for those of us who, contrary to God's will, cannot become like trees and rot like chaff, the Son of God died in our place. He has sufficient power to save us. Through the blessed Holy Spirit, we will know God's power to give life and create anew. Like a tree with life, the Christian grows in the knowledge of God and grows in grace. We have the privilege to know the mystery of Christ for the unity of the church. This privilege should make us humble before God and others in the church. Let’s appropriate our privilege to know the mystery of oneness of all believers in Christ through the Holy Spirit for the glory of God.
