독립기념일을 기리며(Celebrating Independence Day)

이번 독립기념일은 제가 미국에 와서 기념하는 32번째 독립기념일 입니다. 1991년  7월 4일에 볼티모어 국제 공항으로 입국하였습니다. 저녁에 볼티모어 다운타운을 구경하고 불꽃 놀이를 본 기억이 지금도 생생합니다. 그후에 그린빌 다운타운에서 하는 불꽃놀이를 보며 독립기념일을 보냈습니다. 독립기념일은 미국이 영국에서 독립을 선언하고 자주 독립 국가가 됨을 선포한 날입니다. 이를 위하여서 수 많은 이들이 피를 흘렸습니다. 현재 누리고 있는 자유는 싸움과 희생을 통해 얻은 것입니다. 그래서 특별한 의미가 있습니다. 독립기념일은 잊지 말아야 할 날입니다. 선조들의 국가에 대한 헌신과 사랑을 기억해야 하는 날입니다. 더불어 이러한 자유를 지키고 후대에게 물려줄 것을 다짐하는 날입니다. 그런데 많은 이들이 독립기념일의 정신과 의미를 망각하고 물건을 싸게 구입하는 정도의 의미로 독립기념일을 보냅니다. 자유의 의미를 마음에 새기기 보단 노는 날 정도로 보내는 것 같습니다. 영국으로부터의 독립은 마음대로 살아도 좋다는 의미가 아닙니다. 미국 정부의 법을 준수하고 미국을 지키며 자유를 위하여 싸워야 할 책임을 의미합니다. 한국도 일본의 압정에서 해방된 날을 기념합니다. 그런데 많은 이들이 8월 15일 해방일의 의의를 생각하지 않고 공휴일 정도로 생각합니다. 개인의 자유를 자기 하고 싶은 일을 하는 정도로 생각합니다. 어떤 이들은 이웃의 자유를 침해하면서 자기의 자유만을 주장합니다. 독립기념일을 기념하며 하나님이 그리스도 안에서 우리에게 주신 자유를 생각해 봅니다. 물론, 이 자유는 우리 마음대로 행해도 된다는 자유가 아닙니다. 이것은 죄의 형벌과 저주에서 자유케 된 것입니다. 전에는 죄의 종이었지만 그리스도의 십자가 공로로 구원받고 하나님의 종이 된 것입니다. 전에는 죄의 법을 따라 살았지만 이제는 하나님의 법을 따라 살게 된 것입니다. 전에는 사탄의 압제 가운데 그를 섬기며 살았지만 이제는 하나님의 은혜 가운데 그를 섬기며 살게 된 것입니다. 이것이 바로 자유입니다. 우리는 이 자유를 수호하고 전하며 하나님 나라를 확장할 사명자들입니다. 그런데 죄의 속박에서 해방된 후에도 계속 죄 가운데 살아 간다면 이는 그리스도 안에 있는 참 자유를 알지 못하는 것입니다. 구원의 은혜를 알지 못하는 것입니다. 하나님의 사랑을 헛되게 하는 것입니다. 오늘날 많은 이들이 독립기념일이 개인이 원하는 것을 하는 날로 생각하듯 우리는 그리스도 안에 있는 우리의 자유를 그렇게 여기지 말아야 합니다. 그리스도의 십자가 희생을 깊이 묵상하며 마음을 그의 사랑으로 채우는 것이 중요합니다. 우리는 죄에서 자유하고 하나님을 섬기는 자유를 얻은 것을 생각해야 합니다. 은혜를 죄가 아닌 하나님을 섬기는 자유로 삼아야 합니다. 이러한 자유의 은혜가 충만하길 기원합니다. 

This is the thirty third Independence Day I celebrate, since I came to America. On July 30, 1991, I landed on the International Airport in Baltimore. At night, we went out to Baltimore downtown to watch fireworks. I still vividly remember all the beautiful, fantastic fireworks in Baltimore. Since then, I have celebrated Independence Day on and off while watching fireworks in Greenville downtown. Independence Day celebrates a day that the United States of America declared her independence from England and her sovereign nationhood as well, for which a great number of people shed their precious blood. Freedom that Americans enjoy today was not earned without cost. It was earned with many fights and sacrifices. So, it carries special import. Independence Day is never to be forgotten. On Independence Day, all Americans are to remember their ancestors’ sacrifices and love for the country. Also, they are to make up their minds to hand their freedom over to their descendants. But, a lot of people spend Independence Day shopping for things on sale without commemorating the true spirit and meaning of Independence Day. Instead of etching the significance of liberty, they seem to spend it as a play day. Independence from England never means living as one pleases. It entails abiding by the Constitution of America, protecting America, and fighting for freedom. Koreans celebrate the Emancipation Day from the oppression of Japan. But many Koreans doesn’t think over the significance of August 15, their Independence Day, and regard it merely as a day off. They interpret their personal freedom simply as doing things as they please. Some insist on their own freedom while infringe on other’s freedom. While celebrating Independence Day, I think of freedom that God has given us in Christ. Of course, this freedom is not a free pass to do as we please. It refers to liberty from the penalty and curse of sin. It implies that we have become the servants of God after having been saved through the meritorious work of Christ on the cross. Also, it means that we now live according to the law of God whereas we used to live according to the law of sin. In the past, we used to serve Satan under his oppression. Now, we serve God under His grace. This is our Christian freedom. We are called to keep this freedom and spread it so that we can expand the kingdom of God. However, if we continue to live in sin even after having been delivered from the bondage of sin, we do not know true freedom in Christ. Nor do we know God’s saving grace. We make God’s love in vain. Today, many consider Independence Day as a day in which they do things to please themselves. In a similar fashion, however, we shouldn’t consider our liberty in Christ. We must deeply meditate on Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. We must fill our hearts with Christ’s sacrificial love. We must keep in mind that we are free from sin and free to serve God. We must use grace not as a license to sin, but as freedom to serve God. May all of us be filled with such freedom of grace!
