소망(Hope)

경제적 한파가 전 세계를 엄습했습니다. 높은 인플레이션으로 인해 음식 값이 무척 많이 올랐습니다. 신자들이라고 이러한 어려움을 피해갈 수 있는 것은 아닙니다. 하지만 이들에게는 소망이 있습니다. 하나님이 모든 상황에서 그 자녀들과 함께 하신다는 약속에 근거한 소망입니다. 이 소망은 이 땅에 국한된 것이 아니라 영원한 나라로 향합니다. 아무리 절망적인 상황일지라도 믿음으로 하나님을 의지하며 사는 자들에게는 천국이 예비되어 있습니다. 천국에 대한 소망으로 현재의 고난을 대처해 나가는 것이 믿음 생활을 하는 것입니다. 하지만 세속주의적 비관주의가 팽배한 세상에서 이러한 소망을 견지하는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 소망하기에는 현실이 너무 절망적이고 무의미하다는 것입니다. 혹자는 즐길 수 있을 만큼 즐기며 사는 것이 지혜라고 조언합니다. 반대로 어떤 이는 삶의 허무함에 빠져 죽는 것이 낫다고 주장합니다. 더 사는 것은 허무의 고통을 더할 뿐이라는 것입니다. 니이체는 “소망은 모든 악들 가운데 가장 악한 것인데 이는 사람의 고통을 연장하기 때문이다”라고 말하였습니다. 살아 있기에 고통을 완전하게 벗어날 수는 없는 것은 사실입니다. 고통은 삶의 일부이며 어떤 의미에서는 필요한 것입니다. 이를 통하여 인간의 한계를 직시하게 됩니다. 또한 인간의 실존을 직면하며 왜 이렇게 되었는가에 대한 질문을 하게 됩니다. 결국 그리스도의 복음에서 그 해답을 찾습니다. 아담을 통하여 죄가 이 세상에 들어온 후에 이렇게 된 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 아담의 후손인 모든 사람은 하나님을 떠난 죄인인 것을 고백하게 됩니다. 오직 예수 그리스도만이 죄와 사망에서 건져줄 수 있음을 알고 그를 구주로 영접하게 됩니다. 구원을 경험한 자들은 죄로 인하여 겪는 절망, 고통, 허무, 우울함, 외로움, 염려, 수치, 불안과 싸울 수 있게 됩니다. 우리가 산다는 것은 현재의 시간을 사는 것입니다. 하지만 우리는 미래를 향하여 살아갑니다. 우리의 행하는 일들은 미래로 연결됩니다. 그렇기에 미래에 대한 소망을 포기할 수 없습니다. 미래에 대한 소망이 위험을 무릅쓰고 장기적인 계획을 세우게 하며 현재의 난관들을 헤쳐 나가도록 동기를 부여합니다. 영생에 대한 믿음이 있는 자들은 영원한 나라에 대한 소망으로 현재를 살아갑니다. 우리는 그리스도 안에 있는 이 소망을 포기할 수 없습니다. 왜냐하면 이 소망과 우리의 정체성은 분리될 수 없기 때문입니다. 이 소망을 포기하는 것은 우리 자신이 신자인 것을 부정하는 것과 같습니다. 이 소망으로 매일을 사는 연습을 적극 실천하시기를 기원합니다. 

An economic cold wave has swept over the whole world. Due to high inflation, we spend much more for our groceries. Believers can’t escape from such adversity, either. But they have a hope grounded in the promise that God is with His children under all circumstances. Such hope is not limited to this world, but extended toward eternal kingdom. Heaven is in store for those who live by faith even under desperate circumstances. Our faith life is to cope with our present suffering with the hope for heaven. But it is hard to maintain such hope in a world steeped in secularistic pessimism. Some say the reality is too hopeless and meaningless to have a hope. So, they advise us to enjoy life as much as possible. But others argue that we had better get drowned in nothingness of life because living longer adds nothing but pain. Nietzsche said, “In reality, hope is the worst of all evils because it prolongs the torments of man.” It is true that we can’t be wholly free from pain because we are still living. Suffering is part of life. In a sense, it is necessary. Through it, we come to see man’s limitations. Also, we face man’s existentialism, questioning why we have come to suffer in life. After all, we find the answer in the gospel of Christ. We come to realize suffering has come upon humanity after the fall of Adam through which sin entered the world. We come to confess that all people the descendants of Adam are sinners who have departed from God. Knowing that only Jesus Christ can deliver us from sin and death, we come to accept Him as our Savior. Those who have experienced Christ’s redemption are able to fight despair, suffering, emptiness, despondency, loneliness, anxiety, shame, or fear. We live in the present time. But we live toward the future. Our activities are connected to the future. So, we can’t give up hoping for the future. Hope for the future leads us to make a long-term plan despite risks and dangers, motivating us to go through our current hardships. Those who have faith for eternal life live their present time with hope for eternal kingdom. We can’t give up this hope, which is in Christ. It is because our hope and our identity can’t be separated from each other. If we give up our hope for eternal kingdom, it is like denying the status of believer. It is my prayer that all of us actively practice living daily with this hope.
