자비로움(Being merciful)

사람의 마음에는 자비함과 무정함이 공존합니다. 배고파 앙상한 뼈만 남은 아기가 우는 것을 보면 긍휼히 여기는 마음이 듭니다. 그 아이의 아픔을 공감하며 도와주려 합니다. 이것이 긍휼, 자비입니다. 반면에 그런 아기를 보면서 무능한 그 부모, 정부, 혹은 나쁜 환경 탓을 합니다. 또는 내 아기도 아니니 내 일이 아닌 듯 무심코 지나쳐 버리기도 합니다. 이것은 무정함이요 무관심입니다. 어떤 사람은 자비로운 마음이 많고 어떤 사람은 무정한 마음이 많습니다. 긍휼히 여기는 사람의 마음에 무정함이 있을 수 있고 무정한 마음에도 자기 자식은 긍휼이 여기는 마음이 있습니다. 인간의 마음은 죄로 얼룩지고 부패한 마음입니다. 그런데 우리가 구원을 받은 후에는 죄로 인해 부패한 마음에서 성령이 긍휼의 마음을 불러 일으킵니다. 이것은 우리가 태어날 때부터 받은 성격에서 기인한 것이 아닙니다. 우리 마음에 성령께서 부어 주시는 마음입니다. 우리가 어려운 처지 있는 사람들을 불쌍히 여기며 사랑을 실천할 수 있는 것은 성령의 역사입니다. 우는 자로 함께 울며 즐거워하는 자로 함께 즐거워하게 됩니다. 이웃의 아픔과 고통을 공감합니다. 그리고 고통을 덜어주려 노력합니다. 이것이 예수님의 마음입니다. 예수님은 팔복에서 “긍휼히 여기는 자는 복이 있나니 저희가 긍휼이 여김을 받을 것임이요”라고 말씀하십니다(마 5:7). 예수님은 친히 긍휼을 실천하셨습니다. 가난하며 병들고 죄로 고통하는 사람들을 불쌍히 여기셨습니다. 그들을 이 땅에 오셨고 우정, 사랑, 진리, 자유, 치유, 구원을 허락해 주셨습니다. 사람들에게 매국노, 부정한 자, 하나님께 저주 받은 자라 손가락질 당하던 자들을 사랑으로 영접해 주셨습니다. 한번은 의미 있는 삶을 빼앗긴 채 살고 있던 맹인들의 눈을 열어 주셨습니다. 새로운 인생을 선물하신 것입니다. 하지만 유대 종교 지도자들은 예수님이 그런 부류의 사람들과 어울리는 것을 정죄하였습니다. 죄인들과 식사하는 것을 정죄하였습니다. 안식일에 병든 자들을 고쳐 주는 것을 정죄하였습니다. 종교적 순결에 빠져 이웃의 아픔을 공감하지 못하는 것은 무정함의 죄입니다. 예수님은 하나님의 사랑을 고통 중에 자들에게 실천하신 것입니다. 이것은 정죄 받을 일이 아니라 칭찬 받을 일입니다. 예수님은 그 백성들의 고통을 자신의 고통으로 여겼습니다. 그 증거가 그의 십자가 죽음입니다. 그는 십자가에서 그 백성들의 죄, 비참함, 저주, 사망을 짊어지셨습니다. 그리고 그들에게 용서, 평화, 축복, 영생을 주셨습니다. 그들의 죄로 인한 저주를 받으시고 그들의 영생에 이르는 복을 주셨습니다. 이것이 바로 하나님의 사랑이요 자비입니다: “우리에게 있는 대제사장은 우리 연약함을 체휼하지 아니하는 자가 아니요 모든 일에 우리와 한결 같이 시험을 받은 자로되 죄는 없으시니라. 그러므로 우리가 긍휼하심을 받고 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 얻기 위하여 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아갈 것이니라”(히 4:15-16). 

Both mercy and pitilessness are in the heart of man. When we see a scrawny baby crying for food, we feel merciful to him. Feeling empathetic for the baby’s pain, we try to help him. This is compassion and mercy. As we see the baby suffering, in contrast, we may blame their incompetent parents, the government, or harsh circumstances. Or we may unconsciously turn our eyes away from him because he is not our baby. This is pitilessness, apathy. Some may have more of a heart of mercy, whereas others may have more of a heart of mercilessness. The merciful in the heart may have pitilessness and the pitiless in the heart have compassion on their children. The human heart is tainted and corrupted by sin. After we get saved, however, the Holy Spirit calls a heart of compassion out of our corrupt hearts. Such a heart of mercy is not originated from our inborn temperaments. It is from the Holy Spirit who works on our hearts. It is through the work of the Holy Spirit that we take pity on the needy and give them love. We are able to weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice. We are enabled to sympathize with those in pain. Then, we attempt to assuage their pain. This represents the heart of Jesus. In the Beatitudes, Jesus says, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy” (Matt. 5:7). Jesus Himself practiced mercy. He was merciful to the poor, the sick, and those suffering in sin. He came to this world for them and granted them friendship, love, truth, freedom, healing, and salvation. He lovingly received those rejected by their fellow citizens as traitors, the unclean, or the accursed of God. One day, He opened the eyes of the blind who were robbed of their meaningful lives. He gave them a new life. But the Jewish religious leaders accused Him of associating with such people. They condemned Him for dining with sinners. They condemned Him for healing the sick on Sabbath. Bogged down in their religious cleanness, they committed the sin of mercilessness by failing to empathize with their suffering neighbors. Jesus practiced the love of God for those in suffering. His deeds were commendable, not condemnable. Jesus considered His people’s suffering as His own suffering. Its evidence is His death on the cross. He bore the sins, miseries, curses, and death of His people on the cross. Then, He has given them forgiveness, peace, blessings, and eternal life. This is indeed the love and mercy of God: “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:15-16).
