사방으로 욱여쌈을 당할 때(Hard-Pressed on Every Side)

누구나 살다 보면 어려움을 겪습니다. 때때로 우리의 능력으로는 해결할 수 없는 난제들이 있습니다. 비유하자면 100톤의 바위를 손으로 들려는 것과 같은 것입니다. 예를 들면 말기 악성 췌장암과 싸우는 것입니다. 맨손으로 거인 골리앗과 싸우는 것과 같습니다. 날 때부터 맹인으로 태어나는 것입니다. 나병으로 몸이 썩어가는 것입니다. 군대 귀신에 인격이 장악 당하는 것입니다. 깨진 가족 관계입니다. 깊이 뿌리내린 악한 습관과 성격입니다. 매일 쌓이는 죄의 빚입니다. 이런 문제들은 우리의 영혼을 짓누르고 삶을 황폐케 하기도 합니다. 해결할 수 문제들 앞에서 절망하지 말고 그것들을 예수님께로 가져와야 합니다. 아무도 도울 수 없을 때 주님은 우리를 긍휼히 여기시며 도우십니다. 정말 우리의 문제는 다양합니다. 사람마다 겪는 문제가 다를 수 있습니다. 종종 때론 태산 같은 문제에 둘려 싸인 듯한 때가 있습니다. 아무리 둘러봐도 빠져 나갈 구멍이 없는 것처럼 느껴질 때입니다. 사방으로 욱여쌈을 당해서 움직일 수도 없고 빠져나갈 수도 없는 상태입니다. 힘도, 지혜도, 재력도, 인력도 모자라서 도저히 해결할 수 없는 상태입니다. 여러분은 삶에서 이러한 문제를 겪어 보셨는지요? 사도 바울은 그러한 문제를 많이 겪어본 사람입니다. 바울은 복음을 전하다가 고난을 많이 겪었습니다. 그럼에도 그는 포기하지 않았습니다. 아니 포기할 수 없었습니다. 왜냐하면 예수님이 그와 함께 하셨기 때문입니다. 그래서 답답한 일을 당해도 낙심하지 않은 것입니다. 욱여쌈을 당하는 상황에서도 싸임을 거부하였던 것입니다. 그가 그렇게 할 수 있었던 이유는 영원이란 관점으로 어려운 현실을 대면하며 살았기 때문입니다. 바울은 다음과 같이 말합니다: “우리의 잠시 받는 환난의 경한 것이 지극히 크고 영원한 영광의 중한 것을 우리에게 이루게 함이니 우리의 돌아보는 것은 보이는 것이 아니요 보이지 않는 것이니 보이는 것은 잠간이요 보이지 않는 것은 영원함이니라”(고후4:17-18). 하늘이 무너지는 것 같을 때, 사방으로 욱여쌈을 당하는 것 같을 때, 태산 같은 문제 앞에서 무능함에 절망할 때도 그리스도와 그의 영원한 나라를 생각하면 다시금 일어날 소망이 생깁니다. 주님의 능력은 우리의 모든 문제보다 무한히 크십니다. 주님의 사랑은 그 어떤 문제보다 무한히 큽니다. 그분이 우리를 위하여 죽으시고 다시 사셨으며 우리를 위하여 중보하시는 우리의 구주가 되십니다. 예수님이 어떤 분인지를 생각하며 그분을 의지하는 것이 사방으로 욱여쌈을 당할 때 우리가 할 수 있는 최선입니다. 

All of us face hardships in life. Sometimes, there are hard problems we can do nothing to resolve. We may liken them to our attempts to lift up a 100-ton rock with our bare hands. For instance, it is fighting a final-stage malignant pancreatic cancer. It is like fighting a giant Goliath with our bare hands. It is being born blind. It is rotting from leprosy. It is being conquered by the evil spirits of legion. It is a broken family relationship. It is a bad habit or personality deeply rooted in one’s soul. It is the debt of sins piling up daily. These problems may press down on our souls and devastate our lives. Instead of despairing before such unsolvable problems, we must bring them to Jesus. When nobody can help us, the Lord has mercy on us and helps us. Indeed, our problems vary. Each of us may suffer different problems. We often feel as if we were surrounded by a mountain of troubles. No matter how hard we may look around, we may feel there is no way out. It is like being pressed hard on every side; so, we can neither budge nor move out. Lacking in power, wisdom, wealth, or manpower, we are in a situation there is nothing we can do. Have you ever suffered such problems in life? The apostle Paul suffered many of them. He suffered much when he spread the gospel. Nonetheless, he never gave up. He couldn’t give up. It is because Jesus was with him. So, he was not driven to despair even when he was perplexed. When he experienced trouble on every side, he refused to be pressed down. The reason he was able to do so is that he lived his life from the perspective of eternity while confronting harsh realities. Here is what Paul said: “For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal (2 Cor. 4:17-18). When we feel as if the whole sky were collapsing upon us, we were pressed hard on every side, or were in despair before our powerlessness against a mountain of troubles, we begin to have hope to rise if we think of Christ and His everlasting kingdom. The Lord’s power is infinitely greater than all our problems. The Lord’s love is infinitely greater than all of them. He is our Savior who died for us, rose again, and intercedes for us. Thinking of who Jesus is and relying on Him is doing our best when we are hard-pressed on every side.
