말씀과 광야(Word and Wilderness)

광야는 거칠고 척박한 황무지입니다. 인생도 황무지와 같습니다. 인생은 예측할 수 없는 위험과 도전이 가득합니다. 신자라고 이러한 것에서 면제되지는 않습니다. 이스라엘 백성은 애굽의 속박과 노역에서 구원을 받았습니다. 노예의 신분에서 자유의 신분이 되었습니다. 그런데 이들이 들어간 곳은 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 가나안이 아니라 메마른 광야였습니다. 하나님은 이스라엘로 목적지인 약속의 땅으로 이끌며 황무지를 거치게 하였습니다. 애굽에게 가나안까지 한달 정도 걸릴 거리를 40년 동안 광야를 거친 후에 들어가게 하였습니다. 이는 하나님이 우리가 구원 받은 후에 바로 천국으로 데려가지 않는 것과 비슷합니다. 광야를 거치게 하시는 주된 이유는 천국의 삶을 준비하게 하시는 것입니다. 이스라엘 백성은 자유인이 되었기에, 하나님의 법을 따라 책임 있게 사는 제사장 나라와 거룩한 백성으로 부름을 받았습니다. 이들은 하나님 장막을 중심으로 모인 언약의 백성이 되었습니다. 이들에게 주어진 자유는 자기 눈에 옳은 대로 행하는 것이 아닙니다. 그 자유는 하나님의 말씀을 따라 질서와 책임 있게 사는 자유입니다. 하지만 출애굽 1세대는 광야를 거치며 하나님의 말씀을 거역하였습니다. 식생활, 안전 문제로 인해 하나님과 모세에게 불평하였습니다. 그래서 하나님은 그들을 징계하셨습니다. 이들은 척박한 환경에서도 먹을 것을 주시고 적으로부터 보호해 주시는 여호와 하나님을 경험하였습니다. 그럼에도 여전히 애굽에서 익숙했던 문화와 기질을 벗지 못하여 옛 습관을 따라 행하였습니다. 광야에서 애굽의 옛 습관을 벗고 언약의 백성으로 살아야 했지만 거듭 실패하였습니다. 이들은 책임 있는 자유인으로 사는 것에 실패한 것입니다. 이들의 거듭되는 실패와 심판에 대한 경험을 통하여 하나님 법의 중요성을 깨달어야 했습니다. 하나님을 경외하는 것이 얼마나 중요한가를 배워야 했습니다. 안타깝게도 출애굽 1세대는 불신앙으로 광야에서 죽었고 그들이 걱정하던 자녀 세대는 약속의 땅으로 들어갔습니다. 광야는 하나님의 음성을 들을 수 있는 최적의 장소입니다. 광야는 하나님의 말씀을 행하는 자유를 익히는 공간과 시간을 제공합니다. 광야는 말씀의 사람으로 성숙하는 축복의 장소입니다. 적막함, 결핍, 위험, 두려움 속에서 하나님을 찾을 수 밖에 없는 곳입니다. 하나님이 우리로 인생에서 광야의 시간을 거치게 하시는 이유입니다. 하나님은 우리가 말씀을 순종하므로 참 자유와 기쁨을 누리길 원하였습니다. 믿음으로 하나님을 듣고 배우며 순종하고 교제하는 곳이 광야임을 기억합시다. 

The wilderness is a rough and barren wasteland. Life is like a wasteland. Life is full of unpredictable dangers and challenges. Believers are not immune from such things. The Israelites were saved from the bondage of Egypt and servitude. They were freed from slavery. But the place they entered was not Canaan flowing with honey and milk, but the dry wilderness. While leading them to the Promised Land, God let them go through the wasteland. They could have traveled from Egypt to Canaan for about a month. But they had gone through the wilderness for forty years before they entered Canaan. This is similar to the fact that God doesn’t take us directly to heaven immediately after we get saved. The primary reason we go through the wilderness is to prepare ourselves for life in heaven. Being free people, the Israelites were called to be the kingdom of priests and a holy nation that should live responsibly according to the law of God. They became the people of the covenant who gathered around the Tabernacle of God. The freedom given to them was not to do right in their own eyes. It was to live orderly and responsibly according to the word of God. But the first Exodus generation, while traveling through the wilderness, rebelled against the word of God. They complained to God and Moses about food, water, and security. So, God chastised them. They experienced Yahweh God who fed them even in a barren wasteland and protected them from their enemies. Notwithstanding, they still behaved according to the old lifestyle of Egypt whose culture and trends they had been used to. They repeatedly failed to live as the covenant people by putting off the old lifestyle of Egypt in the wilderness. They failed to live as free people with responsibility. Through their repeated failures and their experiences of God’s judgment, they had to realize the importance of God’s law. They had to learn how significant it was to fear God. Unfortunately, the first Exodus generation perished in the wilderness due to their unbelief whereas the generation of their children whom they were worried about entered into the Promised Land. The wilderness is the best place we can listen to the voice of God. It offers us a place and time in which we learn the freedom to do the word of God. It is a place of blessing to grow mature as people of God’s Word. It is a place where we cannot but seek God in loneliness, deficiency, danger, and dread. This is the reason God lets us go through the time of wilderness in life. God wants us to enjoy true freedom and joy by obeying His word. Let’s remember it is the wilderness where we listen to, learn, obey, and fellowship with God by faith.
