자기 발견(Self-Discovery)

우리는 알기 위해 노력합니다. 세상이 어떻게 돌아가고 있는지 알기 위해 매일 신문을 봅니다. 정치, 경제, 연예, 문화, 날씨 등 세상 돌아가는 이야기를 읽어서 이해합니다. 또한 가족이나 친구들, 지인들과 연락하며 소식을 주고 받으며 사람들을 알아 갑니다. 신앙인들은 하나님을 알려고 성경을 열심히 공부합니다. 그런데 이런 지식은 “나”가 아닌 대상에 대한 것입니다. 사람들은 이러한 지식을 축적하는데 많은 시간을 쏟습니다. 왜냐하면 그런 이슈들을 잘 아는 사람들은 지성인으로 인정받기 때문입니다. 하지만 이런 지식도 중요하지만 자기를 아는 지식도 중요합니다. 사실 많은 사람들은 자기가 누구인지를 질문하지 않습니다. 세상 지식은 많지만 정작 자신은 잘 모릅니다. 하지만 자신을 잘 알고 있다고 장담합니다. 스스로에게 속고 있는 것입니다. 자기를 객관적으로 생각해 보지 않기 때문입니다. 아이러니하게도 자신을 가장 많이 알고 있지만 자신을 모르기도 합니다. 이러한 사실을 인정하는 것이 자기를 아는 것의 첫 걸음입니다. 자신을 알려면 자신에게서 떨어져 자신을 관찰하고 실험하며 알아보아야 합니다. 하지만 많은 사람이 자신을 안다고 가정하면서 자신을 잘 모르고 살고 있습니다. 자신을 모르면 자신을 잘못 평가하고 실수하게 됩니다. 하지만 자신을 알면, 즉, 자신의 성격, 능력, 장점, 결점 등을 알면 지혜롭게 행할 수 있습니다. 자신을 과대 평가하여 교만하지도 혹은 과소 평가하여 자기 비하하지도 않습니다. 자신의 한계를 알고 해야 할 것과 하지 말아야 할 것을 분별합니다. 그러면서도 자기의 한계를 넓히려 끝없이 도전하기도 합니다. 자기를 알려면 자기를 객관적으로 평가해 보는 시간을 정기적으로 가져야 합니다. 그리고 자기에 대하여 이웃들이 들려주는 평가도 듣고 검토해 보아야 합니다. 자기를 바르게 이해하려면 자기에게서 떨어져서 객관적으로 보아야 합니다. 지구에 살면서 지구를 한 눈에 볼 수는 없습니다. 지구의 아름다움은 지구 밖 우주에서 지구를 볼 때 느낄 수 있습니다. 상상할 수 없을 정도로 아름다운 지구를 보게 됩니다. 또한 지구가 얼마나 작은 것인지도 지구 밖 우주에서 볼 때 깨달을 수 있습니다. 이와 같이 우리 안에 있는 한계나 아름다움도 우리 밖에서 보아야 깨달을 수 있습니다. 우주와 같이 넓은 하나님의 사랑안에서 우리 자신을 볼 때 우리의 작음도, 우리의 영광도 볼 수 있습니다. 하나님의 사랑은 우리가 그리스도의 피로 구속 받은 죄인인 것을 보여줍니다. 동시에 우리가 하나님의 형상으로 지음 받은 존재인 것을 보여줍니다. 이러한 지식은 자기를 아는데 필수적입니다. 자기를 모르면 영적 맹인입니다. 하지만 하나님을 알고 그 지식에 비추어 자신을 아는 자가 신자입니다. 

We strive to know. We read newspapers daily to see what’s happening in the world. Reading politics, economy, entertainment, culture, weather, and so on, we try to understand the world around us. Also, we get to know people as we communicate with families, friends, or acquaintances via various means. Believers try to get to know God by diligently studying the Bible. All these knowledges are concerned with something other than “me” (self). People spend much time collecting information about them. It is because those who well know such issues are regarded “intellectuel.” Such knowledge is important. But it is equally important to know ourselves. In fact, many today never question what they are. Though they know much about the world, yet they know little about themselves. But they are confident they know themselves. They fall into self-deception. It is because they never think of themselves objectively. Ironically, it is they who know themselves most and yet do not know themselves. Acknowledging this irony is the first step into self-knowledge. We must distance from ourselves, observe ourselves, and experiment ourselves, in order to know ourselves. But, many people simply assume that they know themselves and live without knowing themselves well. If they do not know themselves, they evaluate themselves wrongly and make mistakes. But if they know themselves, that is, their personalities, abilities, strengths, faults, etc., they can behave wisely. They don’t overestimate themselves; so they resist pride. They don’t underestimate themselves; so they resist self-degradation. They discern what to do and what not to do, knowing their limitations. At the same time, they challenge their limitations constantly to make improvement. If we want to know ourselves, we must take time to examine ourselves objectively on a regular basis. Also, we must listen to and examine the frank inputs of our neighbors on our selves. To see ourselves clearly, we must stay aloof from ourselves. We can’t see Planet earth while living on earth. We can fully observe the ecstatic beauty of the earth only from the space. We will be fascinated with it. We can realize how small our plant is only when we look at it outside the earth in the space. Likewise, we can realize our limitations or beauty when from the outside of ourselves. We can see our smallness or our glory from the perspective of God’s space-like, enormous love. God’s love sheds light on the truths that we are sinners redeemed by the blood of Christ and that we were created in the image of God. Such knowledge is necessary for self-knowledge. If we do not know ourselves, we are spiritually blind. But if we know God and know ourselves in light of the knowledge of God, then we are believers of God.
