잃은 것과 얻은 것(Things we lost and things we found)

인생은 잃는 것과 얻는 것으로 이루어져 있습니다. 인생은 어렵고 예측불가 합니다. 인생 사건들을 통과하며 잃는 것과 얻는 것을 동시에 경험합니다. 그렇지만 시련을 통하여 마치 모든 것을 잃은 것처럼 느낄 수 있습니다. 시련 중에 건강, 재산, 관계를 잃을 수도 있습니다. 도움도 소망도 없다고 느낄 수 있습니다. 하지만 감정이 우리를 어떻게 지배한다 해도 고난이 아니면 절대로 얻을 수 없는 유익들도 얻게 됩니다. 코로나 바이러스가 일자리와 생명을 빼앗아 간 것을 의심하는 이는 없습니다. 전 세계적으로 많은 사람이 신체적, 정서적, 재정적 고통을 겪게 하였습니다. 학생들은 교실과 놀이터를 잃었습니다. 사업가들은 고객들을 잃었습니다. 종업원들은 일자리를 잃었습니다. 기독교인들은 교회에서 가지는 공예배와 성경 공부를 잃었습니다. 이와 같은 때에 사회적 거리 두기는 필수적이긴 하지만 커플들, 가족 구성원들, 교인들에게 친밀함, 가까움, 사귐을 빼앗아 갔습니다. 어떤 이들은 소망을 잃었습니다. 졸업생들은 졸업식에서 행진하는 기회를 잃었습니다. 결혼하는 쌍들은 신혼 여행의 기회를 잃었습니다. 분명 많은 사람들이 접근의 자유, 여행의 자유, 일의 자유, 혹은 공예배의 자유를 잃었습니다. 이런 것들을 골몰히 생각하면 절망하기 쉽습니다. 이것은 코로나 바이러스 발발을 포함하여 온갖 종류의 고난을 싸우는 좋은 방법이 결코 아닙니다. 당연히 고난을 통하여 배울 수 있는 것들에 집중하는 것이 훨씬 좋습니다. 우리는 모든 것을 잃지는 않았습니다. 이러한 위기 가운데서도 우리에게 유익한 것들을 얻었습니다. 그러한 것들은 본질상 내면적이고 영적입니다. 사회적 거리 두기는 이웃의 중요성을 우리에게 가르쳐 주었습니다. 우리 모두가 이 세계의 안전을 위하여 중요하다는 것과 우리가 서로에게 중요하다는 것을 가르쳐 주었습니다. 한 사람이 들불처럼 바이러스를 퍼뜨릴 수 있기 때문에 우리 각자가 우리 모두를 위하여 조심해야 합니다. 전에는 이렇게 생각하지 않았습니다. 이것은 코로나 바이러스 위기가 아니면 결코 깨달을 수 없는 것입니다. 이러한 깨달음은 이 전염병을 통과한 후에 우리가 더 좋은 세상을 만드는데 도움이 될 것입니다. 우리는 이 위기를 통하여 더 강하고 지혜로워질 수 있습니다. 고난은 우리를 하나님과 그의 가치관에 더욱 가까이 이끌어 주기도 합니다. 생사가 오가는 상황에서 우리는 일시적인 것을 포기하고 영원한 것을 붙들기 쉽습니다. 일시적인 것들은 잃을 수 있지만, 영원한 것, 즉 하나님과 이웃 사랑에 대한 영원한 진리를 발견할 수 있습니다. 이 진리는 그 어떤 것보다 소중한 것입니다. 이 진리를 배우게 된다면 우리는 잃는 것보다 얻는 것이 더 많다고 말할 수 있을 것입니다. 

Life is consisted of things we lose and things we found. Life is tough and unpredictable. As we go through events in life, we experience losing and finding simultaneously. Nonetheless, we may feel as if we lost everything during a trial. Indeed, we may lose health, wealth, and relationship during a trial. We feel as if we were without help and hope. No matter how our feelings dictate upon us, however, we find things profitable, which we can’t find without suffering. No one doubts the coronavirus pandemic has claimed jobs and lives. It has caused many to suffer physical, emotional, or financial woes worldwide. Students have lost their classrooms and playgrounds. Business people have lost customers. Employees have lost their jobs. Christians have lost their corporate worships and Bible studies in their churches. Social distancing, though it is necessary in a time like this, has deprived the couples, family members, or congregants of intimacy, closeness, or fellowship. Some have lost hope. Graduating students have lost their opportunity to parade in their commencements. Marrying couples have lost their chances to go honeymoon. Surely, many have lost freedom of access, freedom of travel, freedom of work, or freedom of public worship. Mulling over all this, we are likely to fall into despair. This is never a good way to fight any type of suffering, including this coronavirus outbreaks. Of course, it is much better for us to focus on things we can learn from it. We have not lose everything. Even during this crisis, we have found things good for us. Such are by nature internal, spiritual. Social distancing has taught us about the importance of our neighbors. It has taught us that all of us are important for the safety of this world and that we are important to one another. Since one can spread the virus like a wildfire, each one of us should be careful for every one of us. We haven’t thought this way before. This is something we can’t realize without the coronavirus crisis. We have truly learned the importance of cooperation and mutuality. We need one another to get over this crisis. Such a realization will be helpful in building a better world after having gone through this pandemic. We can be stronger and wiser through this crisis. Suffering may bring us closer to God and His value system. In a life-and-death situation, we are liable to forgo things temporal and stick to things eternal. Though we may lose things temporal, we may find something eternal, that is, the eternal truth of love for God and neighbor. This truth is worth everything. If we learn this truth, we can say that we have found more than what we have lost.
