그리스도의 부활과 코로나바이러스(Christ’s Resurrection and Coronavirus)

분명 그리스도의 부활은 코로나 바이러스와 아무런 관련이 없습니다. 전자는 기독교 복음의 역사적, 신학적 핵을 형성하고 후자는 온 세계를 휩쓸고 있는 치명적인 바이러스입니다. 전자는 생명과 소망의 메시지를 퍼뜨리지만 후자는 사망과 공포의 메시지를 퍼뜨립니다. 그렇지만 둘은 같이 생각해 보면 부활의 메시지는 코로나 바이러스의 공포에 대한 답이 된다는 점을 알게 됩니다. 지난 부활절 때는 코로나 바이러스 유행병이 없었습니다. 다른 상황과 기분에서 부활절을 기리며 예배할 수 있었습니다. 하지만 이번 부활절에는 좋든 싫든 코로나 바이러스 대유행 병의 죽음 위협 가운데 죄와 사망을 이기신 그리스도의 승리를 기리며 예배할 수밖에 없습니다. 저는 이 대유행 병이 있기 전에 개인적으로 “코로나”란 단어에 호감을 느낀 곤 했습니다. 그린빌에 내가 좋아하는 “코로나”란 멕시코 식당이 있는데 음식이 매우 맛이 있기 때문입니다. 그런데 지금은 “코로나”란 단어가 코로나 식당과 코로나 바이러스에 같이 사용되기 때문에 그 식당을 생각할 때 약간 이상한 느낌이 듭니다. 둘 사이에는 아무런 관련이 없지만 “코로나”란 단어에 대한 일종의 반감이 듭니다. 또한 여러 해 전에 캘리포니아에 있는 코로나 시로 이사한 교회 가족이 있습니다. 이들을 보러 코로나를 방문해 보고 싶어 했습니다. 그런데 코로나 시와 코로나 바이러스는 아무런 관계가 없음에도 지금은 코로나에 별로 가고 싶지 않은 느낌이 듭니다. 분명 부활절과 코로나 바이러스도 아무런 관계가 없습니다. 하지만 우리는 코로나 바이러스 재앙 가운데 부활절의 의미를 더욱 깊이 새겨볼 수 있습니다. 코로나 바이러스는 수 만명의 생명을 앗아 갔습니다. 또한 수 백만의 일자리와 사업을 없애버렸습니다. 사회적, 가족적, 종교적인 평범한 모임 조차도 막아 버렸습니다. 우리는 그 무참한 파괴력을 느끼고 있습니다. 코로나 바이러스에 대한 불길한 예견으로 인해 어떤 이들은 절망 가운데 자살을 선택했습니다. 언제 끝날지 예측할 수 없어 미래에 대한 두려움을 더하고 있습니다. 이런 위기 가운데 사람들은 무엇을 필요로 할까요? 분명 코로나 바이러스 치료약과 예방 백신을 애타게 기다리고 있습니다. 의료 과학자들이 그것을 개발하기 전까지는 무기력하게 기다릴 수 밖에 없습니다. 사람들은 코로나 바이러스 치유책과 백신을 필요로 할 뿐만 아니라 절망과 두려움의 치명적인 바이러스에 대한 해독제도 필요로 합니다. 사도들은 절망과 두려움의 바이러스에 전염되어 유대 당국자들로부터 숨어 있었습니다. 예측할 수 없는 암담한 미래를 대면하고 있다 느꼈습니다. 아마도 그들의 운명이 예수님의 십자가 처형과 함께 끝났다고 믿었을지도 모릅니다. 이러한 때에 부활하신 그리스도께서 나타나시어 “너희에게 평강이 있을지어다”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님은 죄와 사망을 그의 죽음으로 정복하셨습니다. 그는 생명이요 부활이십니다. 그를 믿는 자는 영원히 그와 함께 살 것입니다. 의심의 여지 없이 부활절은 절망과 사망과 코로나 바이러스에 대항하는 소망과 생명의 예배 시간이 되어야 합니다. 우리는 분명 이 위기를 부활절의 정신으로 통과해 살아야 할 것입니다. 

Apparently, Christ’s resurrection has nothing to do with coronavirus. The former is the historical and theological core of the Christian gospel, whereas the latter is a deadly virus impacting the whole world. The former spreads a message of life and hope, whereas the latter spreads that of death and terror. However, thinking of the two together we find the message of resurrection is an answer to the terror of coronavirus. Last Easter, we didn’t have a coronavirus epidemic. We celebrated Easter in a different context and mood. Like it or not, however, this Easter we cannot help celebrating Christ’s victory over sin and death amid death-threat of the coronavirus outbreak. Before this pandemic, I personally would feel favorable to the word “corona.” I like an Mexican restaurant named “corona” in Greenville that serves excellent food. But, I feel now kind of little strange when I think of that place due to the fact that the word “corona” is commonly used in the two. Though the two have nothing to do with each other, I feel something against anything sounding “corona.” Also, I know a church family that moved to Corona, CA, years ago. I used to feel like visiting Corona to see them. However, I now feel like staying away from Corona though the city of Corona and the virus of Corona have nothing in common. Certainly, Easter and coronavirus have nothing in common. But, we can more deeply appreciate the significance of Easter in the context of the coronavirus disaster. Coronavirus has killed tens of thousands worldwide. Also, it has killed tens of millions’ jobs and businesses. It has blocked even normal gatherings, social, familial, or religious. We feel its ruthless worldwide impact. Due to a dark prospect of the coronavirus catastrophe, some have chosen to end their lives in despair. Unpredictability of ending of the flu compounds fear of the future. What do people need during such clueless crisis? Surely, they are desperately anticipating the message of coronavirus treatment and vaccine. Until medical scientists develop them, they cannot but to wait helplessly. Not only do they need the coronavirus treatment and vaccine, but also they need an antidote to the deadly virus of despair and fear. The apostles were once infected with the virus of despair and fear, hiding themselves from the Jewish authorities. They supposed that they faced an unpredictable, dark future. Probably, they may have believe that their destiny came to an end at the crucifixion of Jesus. In such a time, the risen Christ appeared to them, saying, “Peace be with you!” Jesus conquered sin and death through His death. He is the life and resurrection. Whoever believes in Him shall live with Him forever. Unquestionably, Easter is to be a celebration of hope and life against despair, death, and coronavirus. We will definitely have to live through this crisis in a spirit of Easter.
