주님의 이름으로 여러분에게 “샬롬”의 안부 인사를 드립니다. 우리는 주님의 평안이 더욱 필요한 시기를 지나가고 있습니다. 코로나바이러스 재난은 평안을 빼앗아 가고 두려움을 남겨주었습니다. 온통 코로나바이러스 소식 뿐입니다. 처음에는 남의 일이며 우리에게는 별 일 없을 것이라 생각했는데 잘못된 생각이었습니다. 코로나바이러스는 삽시간에 전 세계를 접수해 버렸습니다. 최근에 이상한 습관이 생겼습니다. 실시간으로 변하는 코로나바이러스 확진자와 사망자 수에 대한 통계를 계속해서 확인하고 있습니다. 사람들과 거리를 두고 있습니다. 바이러스가 공기를 통해서 전파될 수 있다고 들었기 때문입니다. 공포감은 아니지만 이상한 무력감을 느낍니다. 스트레스를 받고 있는 것 같습니다. 우리가 살고 있는 지역에 확진자가 6명이 있습니다. 세계 전역에서 더 이상 숫자가 늘어나지 않기를 바라는 마음은 매순간 무시를 당하고 있습니다. 얼마큼까지 늘어날까 생각하는 것에 지쳐버렸습니다. 주님께서는 불안해하는 제자들에게 말씀을 통하여 평안을 주시며 “세상에서는 너희가 환란을 당하나 담대하라”고 말씀하셨습니다. 코로나바이러스도 환란입니다. 이에 대하여 듣고 보는 소식들이 평강을 눌러버렸습니다. 불확실한 미래에 대한 염려가 우리의 마음을 흔들고 있습니다. 그렇지만 주님은 “담대하라”고 말씀하십니다. 주님께서 우리와 함께 하시기 때문입니다. 이 진리를 붙들고 이 환란의 때를 지나가야 합니다. 이 말은 우리가 절대로 코로나바이러스에 감염되지 않을 것을 뜻하지는 않습니다. 믿는 자들도 조심하지 않으면 언제든지 감염되어 고통을 당할 수 있습니다. 우리는 이러한 때에 지혜롭게 행해야 합니다. 먼저 몸과 마음을 청결하게 유지하고 사회적 거리 두기를 통해 바이러스의 확산을 줄이는 일에 적극 동참해야 합니다. 마음을 낮추고 주님의 긍휼과 도움을 구해야 합니다. 인간의 교만은 보이지도 않는 코로나바이러스에 으해 깨지고 말았습니다. 하나님 앞에 겸손할 때입니다. 또한 이웃의 안전을 위하여 서로 협력해야 합니다. 코로나바이러스는 이웃의 중요성을 깨닫게 해 주었습니다. 서로를 돌아보고 돕는 계기로 삼아야 합니다. 가정에서 보내는 시간을 가족의 유대 관계를 돈독하게 하며 신앙 서적을 읽어 영혼을 살찌게 해야 합니다. 가족과 이웃의 소중함을 깨닫는 시간으로 삼아야 합니다. 공예배의 중요성을 깨닫는 시간으로 삼아야 합니다. 기도와 말씀의 경건 훈련을 느슨하게 하지 말고 오히려 철저하게 하여 신앙 성장의 계기로 삼아야 합니다. 그러면 주님의 “샬롬”이 우리의 마음과 삶에 질서와 평안을 유지하도록 도울 것입니다. 우리 서로를 위하여 주님의 “살롬”을 기도합시다. 여러분 모두에게 주님의 “샬롬”이 넘치길 축원합니다. 

Greetings of “shalom” to you in the name of the Lord! We are passing through a time when we need the peace of the Lord even more. The coronavirus pandemic has replaced peace of mind with fear. News of coronavirus abound everywhere. At first, we felt as if it were someone else’s problem and we would be fine. We were proven wrong. The virus has spread all over the world in no time. Recently, I have found myself doing things habitually. I constantly check on the ever-changing statistics of the coronavirus cases and deaths in the US. I distance myself from others. It is because I have heard the virus could be spread through the air. I don’t feel terrified and yet I feel oddly powerless. Apparently, I feel myself under stress. There are six confirmed cases in the Upstate. I wish the number of confirmed cases would not increase throughout the world. But my wish comes to nothing every second. I feel wearied as I ponder on how many would be infected eventually. The Lord gave peace to His disturbed disciples through His Word and said, “Be of good courage when we have trouble in the world.” Coronavirus is a trouble. News about it we hear and watch suppress peace in our hearts. Worry about the uncertain future shakes our hearts. But the Lord says, “Take courage!” The Lord is with us. Holding unto this truth, we need to pass through this time of trial. This doesn’t mean that we can never be infected with the virus. Unless we believers should be careful, we may be infected anytime and suffer pain. Therefore, we must act wisely in a time like this. First, we must keep our bodies and hearts clean and practice social distancing whereby we should actively participate in limiting the spread of the virus. Also, we must humble ourselves and seek the Lord for mercy and help. The human pride is shattered by the invisible coronavirus. We must be humble before God. We must work together for safety of our neighbors. Due to coronavirus, we have come to appreciate the importance of our neighbors. We must take this time as an occasion of caring and helping each other. We must use our time of staying at home as an opportunity to deepen a relationship with our family and enrich our souls by reading good Christian books. As we go through this time of trial, we should realize how precious our families and neighbors are. Also, we must realize how important our corporate worship is. Instead of being slackened about prayer and word, we must discipline ourselves through prayer and word so that we can grow spiritually mature. If so, then the Lord’s “shalom” will help us keep order and peace in our hearts and lives. Let’s pray for the Lord’s “shalom” for one another. May the Lord’s “shalom” overflow to all of you!
