기도하기: 크신 구원을 베풀어 주신 하나님 아버지께 영광을 돌립니다. 분주한 마음을 차분하게 해 주셔서 하나님께 집중할 수 있게 해 주세요. 구원의 기쁨이 가득한 예배가 되도록 도와주세요.

말씀 배우기: 마태복음5:16을 함께 읽어보세요: “이같이 너희 빛을 사람 앞에 비취게 하여 저희로 너희 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하라.”

주제: 참된 제자는 빛 된 행실을 통하여 하나님께서 영광을 받으시게 해야 합니다.  

사람들은 크리스천들이 선한 일을 할 것이라고 기대합니다. 이런 기대가 깨지면 크리스천들은 욕을 먹고 하나님의 존재는 부정을 당합니다. 이는 오늘날 한국에서 기독교 신뢰도가 바닥을 치는 이유입니다. 예수님은 그의 제자들이 세상에서 어떤 존재가 되어야 하는지를 보여주십니다. 그것은 신자들이 빛 된 행실을 통하여 하나님께서 영광을 받으시게 하는 것입니다. 오늘은 이러한 점을 살펴 보려 합니다.

첫째, 참된 제자들의 빛은 착한 행실을 뜻합니다. 착한 행실은 믿음으로 행한 사랑으로 요약됩니다. 예수님을 믿고 구원 받은 자들은 십자가 사랑을 경험한 자들입니다. 이들은 예수님이 자기를 희생하여 내어 주신 것처럼 자기를 내어 주는 사랑을 실천합니다. 이것은 자기 사랑이란 어둠에 갇힌 자들과 대조적인 것입니다. 사랑은 세상을 변화시키는 하나님의 능력입니다. 우리는 사랑의 행실을 통하여 예수님의 십자가 사랑을 드러내야 합니다. 자기 중심성을 넘어 하나님과 이웃을 사랑하는 믿음을 실천해야 합니다. 사랑으로 선을 행할 때 하나님의 살아 계심이 드러납니다.  

둘째, 참된 제자는 착한 행실을 뽐내지 않습니다. 바리새인들은 자기의 의나 선행을 뽐내려고 나팔을 불었습니다. 이것이 그들에겐 행복이었을 것입니다. 하지만 위선으로는 참된 만족이 없습니다. 착한 일을 할 때는 자기 영광을 나팔 불지 말고 하나님의 선하심을 선포해야 합니다. 위선은 인간 본성에 깊이 뿌리내리고 있습니다. 우리의 죄성을 과소평가하거나 우리의 선을 과대평가하지 말아야 합니다. 하나님의 은혜가 아니면 아무 것도 행할 수 없는 존재임을 인정하는 겸손이 필요합니다.  다른 이들보다 낫다고 스스로를 높이는 것은 넘어짐과 불행의 지름길입니다.  

셋째, 참된 제자는 모든 것을 하나님의 영광을 위하여 합니다. 선행은 고통 가운데 신음하는 이웃을 위로하고 돕는 것 일 수 있습니다. 하지만 이렇게 하는 궁극적 목적은 하나님의 영광입니다. 믿는 자는 먹든지 마시든지 모든 것을 하나님의 영광을 위하여 합니다(고전 10:31). 착한 행실이란 도구를 통하여 하나님의 살아 계심, 사랑하심, 아름다우심, 영화로우심을 드러내는 것이 믿는 자의 사명입니다. 오직 하나님의 은혜로 구원 받은 죄인임을 아는 자들은 자기 안에 자랑할 것이 없음을 고백합니다. 선행을 통하여 이웃이 하나님을 만나게 될 때 신자는 기쁨으로 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 됩니다.  

20 와트 전구 빛이든 100 와트 전구 빛이든 태양 앞에선 아무런 차이가 없습니다. 겸손은 자기의 의를 감추고 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 것입니다. 참된 제자는 다른 이들로 하나님을 알고 의지하며 영광을 돌리도록 부름을 받았습니다. 이러한 목적에 충실한 자가 복된 자입니다.      

적용 나누기

1.      가족을 어떻게 대하고 있습니까? 좋게 대할 때와 나쁘게 대할 때에 양심이 무어라 하는지 나누어 보세요.

2.     착한 행동을 할 때 가족에게 인정과 칭찬을 받고 싶은 마음이 있습니까? 누군가 자기의 착한 일을 뽐내며 자랑할 때 어떻게 반응하는 것이 지혜로운지 이야기 해 보세요.  

3.     가족이 착하게 행한 것으로 인하여 칭찬해 줄 때 어떻게 반응하십니까?  우리의 선행이 하나님에게만 영광이 되도록 하려면 어떻게 해야 할까요?  

감사 나누기: 하나님께 감사드릴 것이 있으면 나누어 보세요. 예수님과 어떤 사귐 가운데 살았는지 나누어 보세요.

기도하기: 하나님, 우리를 하나님의 영광을 위하여 지으신 것을 감사합니다. 이러한 사실을 잊고 우리의 행실로 하나님께 영광을 돌리지 못한 것을 용서해 주세요. 사람들에게 악하게 행한 것을 용서해 주세요. 예수님의 선하심을 본 받을 수 있도록 도와주세요. 그래서 사람들이 우리의 선한 삶을 볼 때에 우리가 하나님께 속한 백성인 것을 알게 해 주세요. 성령의 능력으로 선한 열매를 맺어 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 도와주세요.

Opening Prayer: We give glory to God our Father who has granted great salvation. Grant us calmness in our hearts so that we can concentrate on you. Help us enjoy fullness of joy of salvation as we worship you!

Lesson: Read Matt. 5:16 together: In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Theme: True disciples should bring glory to God through deeds of light.

People in general have a high expectation that Christians will do good. If such an expectation is broken, then Christians are blamed and God is denied. This is what we observe today. No wonder, Christianity suffers the lowest level of credibility in Korea. Jesus makes it clear how His disciples are for the world, that is, believers are to glorify God through deeds of life. We shall discuss this issue today.

First, the light of true disciples refers to their good deeds. Good deeds are summed up in love practiced by faith. Those who believe Jesus and receive salvation experience the love of Christ on the cross. They try to imitate self-sacrificing, self-giving love of Jesus. Self-giving lifestyle contradicts self-loving lifestyle. Love is the power of God that transforms the world. We should show the love of Jesus on the cross by practicing deeds of love. We should practice faith of love for God for neighbor beyond our self-centeredness. When we do good through love, we demonstrate to the world God is real.      

Second, true disciples do not brag about their good deeds. The Pharisees broadcasted the glory of their self-righteousness and goo works. They took it as happiness. But there is no true contentment in hypocrisy. When we do good deeds, we should not trumpet the glory of self, but show forth the goodness of God.  Hypocrisy is deeply rooted in human nature. We should neither underestimate our sinful nature nor overestimate our good. We need to be humble enough to acknowledge we can do nothing apart from God’s grace. If we see ourselves better than others and exalt ourselves, we are taking the shortcut to stumbling and unhappiness.  

Third, true disciples do all things for the glory of God. Good deeds may be seen in comforting those groaning in pain and helping them out. But the ultimate purpose of doing all this lies in the glory of God. Whether they eat or drink, believers do all things for the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31). Believers are called to show forth the existence, love, beauty, or glory of God by means of good deeds. Those who know they are sinners saved by grace alone confess there is nothing to glory in within themselves. When they lead their neighbors to meet with God, they give glory to God with joy.

20-watt lightbulb or 100-watt lightbulb makes no difference before the sun. Humility is to hide self-righteousness and to glorify God. True disciples are called to make others know, trust, and glorify God. Blessed are those who are faithful to such purpose.        

Application

1.      How do you treat your family members? Share what your conscience tells either when you treat them well or when you treat them badly.   

2.     Do you want to receive recognition and praise from your family members when you do good deeds? Discuss what is a wise way to respond to those who arrogantly brag about their good deeds.

3.     When your family members praise you for your good works, how do you respond to them? How can you make sure that your good deeds bring glory only to God?     

Praise Sharing: If you have any praise, please share it with the family. How have you walked with Jesus today?

Closing Prayer: O God, we give thanks to you that you have made us for your glory. Please, forgive us our failure to glorify you through our deeds by forgetting this fact. Please, forgive us our sin that we have treated others badly. Please, help us imitate the goodness of Jesus. So, make others recognize we belong to you when they see our good lives.  Please, help us bear the fruit of goodness by the power of the Holy Spirit so that we can glory you.
