참된 제자: 세상의 소금

찬양하기: 459장-누가 주를 따라                                                                                                                                                     

기도하기: 은혜로우신 하나님 아버지, 오늘도 우리의 삶을 인도해 주시니 감사합니다. 아버지의 변치 않는 사랑을 인하여 찬양과 영광을 돌려드립니다. 이곳에 성령으로 함께 하시어 예배를 받아 주소서.   

말씀 배우기: 마태복음5:13을 함께 읽습니다: “너희는 세상의 소금이니 소금이 만일 그 맛을 잃으면 무엇으로 짜게 하리요 후에는 아무 쓸데 없어 다만 밖에 버리워 사람에게 밟힐 뿐이니라.”

주제: 참된 제자는 세상에서 맛을 내는 소금이기에 우리는 주님의 제자로 세상 가운데서 행해야 합니다.

“허, 그 사람 싱겁기는”, “저 사람은 독해요”, “작은 고추가 매워요”, “정말 짠 구두쇠야”, “그는 스위트 한 사람이야.” 맛에 사람의 성격이나 인격을 빗 된 표현들입니다. 예수님도 그의 제자들을 맛을 내는 소금에 비유하셨습니다. 안타깝게도 많은 신자들이 돈, 명예, 권력, 인기의 맛에 빠져 소금의 맛을 상실하였습니다. 오늘은 참된 제자가 어떠한 자인지 살펴 보려 합니다.   

첫째, 참된 제자는 세상에 꼭 필요한 존재입니다. 소금이 식생활과 음식에 필수적인 것처럼 제자들도 세상에 필수적인 존재입니다. “세상”이라 번역된 말은 “이 땅”을 뜻하며 이는 우리가 발을 딛고 서 있는 삶의 현장입니다. 예수님은 우리가 가정, 학교, 직장, 사업장 등에서 사람들에게 꼭 필요한 그의 대표자들이라고 칭찬하십니다. 주님은 우리를 세상으로 파송 하시며 세상에 속하지 않으면서도 세상에 꼭 필요한 존재로 지혜롭게 살라고 명하십니다.

둘째, 참된 제자는 세상에 유용한 존재입니다. 소금이 필수적이라는 것은 유용하다는 것입니다. 소금은 크게 두가지 면에서 유용합니다. 첫째는 부패를 막아주는 방부제입니다. 소금으로 저민 고기는 썩지 않고 오래 간직할 수 있습니다. 이와 같이 우리는 세상의 온갖 부패를 방지하는 역할을 해야 합니다. 죄로 썩은 냄새가 나는 세상에서 그리스도의 향기가 되어야 합니다. 둘째는 참 맛을 내줍니다. 맛은 삶의 기쁨, 행복을 뜻한다고 볼 수 있습니다. 별 맛 없는 죽에 소금을 조금만 넣어도 맛난 죽으로 변하듯 우리는 사람들 가운데 녹아져 맛을 내야 합니다.

셋째, 참된 제자의 진정한 맛은 인격입니다. 소금의 참된 맛은 예수님을 닮은 인격입니다. 예수님은 하나님을 사랑하고 죄인들을 사랑하신 완전한 인격의 소유자이십니다. 우리의 죄를 용서하시기 위하여 자신을 십자가 죽음에 내어 주신 사랑은 최고의 인격입니다. 세상이 우리에게서 맛보고자 하는 소금의 맛은 예수님을 닮은 자기 희생적이고 겸손한 사랑의 인격입니다. 우리가 이러한 인격으로 이웃을 대할 때 소금의 역할을 제대로 하는 것입니다. 제자도의 본질은 예수님을 닮는 것입니다.

넷째, 맛을 상실한 제자는 세상에 무익합니다. 소금은 특성상 짠 맛을 잃어버릴 수 없습니다. 그런데 순수한 소금에 불순물이 뒤섞여 버리면 소금 고유의 맛을 내지 못합니다. 죄의 불순물이 우리의 인격을 완전히 뒤덮어 버린 상태입니다. 예수님은 “맛을 잃는 것”을 아무 쓸모 없는 인간으로 버려져 짓밟히는 비참한 삶을 사는 것이라 경고합니다. 감사하게도, 주님은 우리를 소금처럼 정말 가치 있는 존재로 부르셨습니다. 이 진리는 큰 위로인 동시에 큰 도전입니다. 주님의 사랑의 참 맛을 매일 맛보며 살 때 주님 닮는 행복한 인격자로 자라갈 수 있습니다.                  

적용 나누기

1.      자신을 맛에 비유해서 표현한다면 어떤 맛이라고 생각하십니까? 자신을 세상에 꼭 필요한 존재로 여기십니까 아니면 아무 가치 없는 존재로 여기십니까?

2.     부패한 세상에서 어떤 역할을 하고 있습니까? 부패를 막는 소금 역할입니까 아니면 부패를 전파하는 균 역할을 하고 있습니까?

3.     예수님을 닮고자 어떤 노력을 하십니까? 세상에서 소금의 맛을 내기 위하여 어떻게 해야 할지를 함께 나누어 보세요.  

감사 나누기: 하나님께 감사드릴 것이 있으면 나누어 보세요. 예수님과 어떤 사귐 가운데 살았는지 나누어 보세요.

기도하기: 주님, 우리를 소금과 같이 귀한 존재로 불러 주시니 감사합니다. 제대로 된 소금 맛을 내지 못해 주님의 이름을 욕되게 한 것을 용서해 주세요. 세상 사람들에게 소금같이 꼭 필요하고 유익한 존재가 될 수 있도록 도와 주세요. 예수님 사랑의 참 맛을 모르고 살아가는 사람들이 세상에 참으로 많습니다. 이들로 예수님의 사랑의 참 맛을 볼 수 있도록 이끄는 일에 저희 가족을 사용해 주세요.

                  True Discipleship: The Salt of the Earth

Opening Prayer:

Lesson: Read Matt. 5:13 together: You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

Theme: Because true disciples are savory salt for the world, we must walk as the Lord’s disciples in the world. 

The Koreans compare the personality or character of a certain person to a certain taste. For example, they say, “He is very sour,” meaning that he is very plain and bland. “That guy is of very strong taste”, meaning he is dogged and tough. They often say “the small chili is spicy.” Or he is very salty, referring to his miserly character. Or he is very sweet. Jesus also compared His disciples to savory salt. Unfortunately, a lot of believers have lost saltiness while being flavored with money, fame, power, or popularity. Today, let’s see what true disciples are all about.     

First, true disciples are indispensable for the world. As salt is necessary for diet and health, so the disciples are necessary for the world. The word translated “world” in the Korean Revised Version is actually “earth,” which refers to a real life-setting where we stand on our feet. Jesus compliments us as His representatives, who are indispensable for people, at homes, schools, jobsites, or workplaces. While sending us to the world, the Lord commands us not to belong to the world, but to conduct wisely as those needed for the world.

Second, true disciples are useful for the world. Indispensability of salt implies its usefulness. Salt is largely useful in two ways. First, it serves as preservative that stems decay. If it is treated with salt, meat can be preserved with decaying for a long time. In like manner, we should play a role in preventing the world from all kinds of corruption. We must be the aroma of Christ in a sin-rotting, stenchy world. Second, salt makes food tasty. Savor here may be understood as joy and happiness in life. Tasteless porridge can turn tasty with little salt. Likewise, we should dissolve like salt and add flavor among people.    

Third, the savior of true disciples is their character. True savor of salt here represents Christlike character. Jesus is a Person of perfect character that has loved both God and sinners. His sacrificial love, demonstrated in His death on the cross for the remission of sin, is an epitome of supreme character. The world wants to taste the savor of salt, that is, the character of Christ-like sacrificial, humble love. The essence of discipleship lies in imitating Christ.       

Fourth, savorless disciples are worthless for the world. Salt can’t lose its saltiness by nature. But if it is adulterated with impurities, pure salt can’t produce its inherent savor. It is like sinful impurities have entirely covered our character. Jesus warns us that loss of salty flavor will be like being thrown out and tramped on as worthless people. We are so grateful that the Lord has called us worthy as salt. This truth gives us both great comfort and big challenge. When we live an everyday life of tasting the true savor of the Lord’s love, we can grow as people of Christlike happy character.

1.      To what kind of taste do you think you can compare yourself? Do you consider yourself to be indispensable for the world or worthless for the world?  

2.     What roles do you serve in this corrupt world? Do you serve as salt stopping corruption or as a germ carrier spreading corruption?

Closing Prayer: O Lord, thank you so much that you have called us precious like salt. Please, forgive us our sin that we have brought shame on the Lord’s name by failing to serve as salt. Please, help us be indispensable and useful like salt for people of the world. There are so many people who live in this world without knowing the true savor of Jesus’ love. Please, use our family for leading them to taste the true savor of Jesus’ love.
