참된 제자: 진심으로 의를 행함

기도하기: 세계를 아름답게 지으시고 우리를 그곳에 살게 하신 하나님 아버지를 찬양합니다. 우리를 보살펴 주시는 아버지의 사랑에 감사드립니다. 이 시간 우리가 진정과 진령으로 예배할 수 있도록 도와 주세요. 아버지, 우리의 예배를 기쁘게 받아 주소서.  

말씀 배우기: 마태복음 5:17-19을 함께 읽습니다-¹⁷ 내가 율법이나 선지자나 폐하러 온 줄로 생각지 말라 폐하러 온 것이 아니요 완전케 하려 함이로라 ¹⁸ 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 천지가 없어지기 전에는 율법의 일점 일획이라도 반드시 없어지지 아니하고 다 이루리라 ¹⁹ 그러므로 누구든지 이 계명 중에 지극히 작은 것 하나라도 버리고 또 그같이 사람을 가르치는 자는 천국에서 지극히 작다 일컬음을 받을 것이요 누구든지 이를 행하며 가르치는 자는 천국에서 크다 일컬음을 받으리라.

주제: 참된 제자는 하나님의 도덕적 기준을 따라 위선이 아닌 진심으로 의를 행합니다.

어떤 이들은 은혜로 구원 받았기에 율법을 지키지 않아도 된다고 주장하고 어떤 이들은 구원을 받으려면 율법을 지켜야만 한다고 주장합니다. 그러나 예수님은 율법을 폐하지도 않고 율법을 구원의 길로 정하지도 않으셔셧습니다. 주님은  바리새인들에게 반-율법주의자라고 공격을 받았습니다. 하지만 주님은 바리새인들의 위선적이고 피상적이며 형식적인 율법 준수의 죄를 드러내십니다. 예수님은 그의 제자들이 하나님의 도덕적 기준을 따라 진심으로 의를 행해야 한다고 가르치십니다. 오늘은 이러한 점을 살펴보려 합니다.  

첫째, 참된 제자는 하나님의 법에 맞추어 생활함을 기뻐합니다. 예수님은 율법과 선지자, 곧 구약 전체의 말씀을 절대적인 권위로 인정하고 그 말씀을 따라 완전한 삶을 사셨습니다. 천지는 없어질 지라도 하나님의 법은 일점일획도 없어지지 않고 이루어질 것이라고 하셨는데 예수님은 율법이 요구하는 완전한 의를 이루신 분입니다. “의”는 기준에 꼭 들어맞는 상태를 말합니다. 여기서 말하는 기준은 하나님의 법입니다. 하나님의 법은 하나님 사랑과 이웃 사랑으로 요약됩니다. 이것은 하나님의 성품에 근거하기에 변하지 않습니다. 이것은 제자의 삶에 절대적인 기준이 됩니다. 자기 소견에 옳은 대로 행하는 현대 사회에서 우리는 예수님을 사랑하기에 그의 사랑의 법을 사랑하며 지킵니다.  

둘째, 참된 제자는 늘 의를 신실하게 행하고자 합니다. 이들은 항상 하나님의 법 기준에 맞는 마음의 의를 신실하게 실천하려 애씁니다. 그런데 많은 기독교인들이 감정, 감동, 은혜 받은 느낌에 따라서 신자의 삶을 살려고 합니다. 이것은 잘못된 것이며 실패하게 되어 있습니다. 주님의 십자가 사랑을 의지하는 자들은 사랑의 의를 실천하고자 주님의 은혜를 구합니다. 하나님의 법이 요구하는 신실함은 일시적인 것이 아닙니다. 많은 이들이 교회에 가는 주일에만 신자의 모습을 합니다. 하지만 참된 제자는 사랑의 법을 따라 늘 하나님께 충성합니다. 하나님의 법이 영원한 것을 알고 문화적 분위기, 사회적 압력, 개인적 기분에 상관없이 신실하게 그 의를 행해야 합니다.      

셋째, 참된 제자는 하나님 법의 모든 요구를 행하고자 애씁니다. 어떤 이들은 계명의 경중을 자의적으로 판단하고 가르칩니다. 계명이 너무 무거워 자신들의 능력에 맞게 낮추어 지켜 보려 합니다. 계명의 경중을 나누고 마음대로 계명의 요구를 변질시켜 가르치는 것은 죄입니다. 그런데 우리의 문제는 남에게는 이렇게 저렇게 하라고 가르치면서 정작 자신은 그대로 행하지 않는 것입니다. 바리새인들도 그랬고 이들은 작은 자들이지만 스스로를 크게 여겼습니다. 자기 모순과 교만에 빠졌던 것입니다. 우리는 하나님의 법의 경중을 자의적으로 판단하지 말고 모든 요구를 실천하여야 합니다. 주님의 도우심이 없이는 불가능합니다. 주님의 은혜는 그분의 법, 곧 사랑의 법을 지키도록 능력을 줍니다.

적용 나누기

1.      하나님의 법이란 표현을 들을 때 어떻게 느끼십니까? 부담스럽습니까, 피하고 싶습니까? 아니면 사랑스럽고 소중하게 느끼십니까? 시편 119:97-105을 읽으며 시편 기자가 얼마나 하나님의 법을 사랑하였는지를 느껴보세요.

2.     하나님을 사랑하는 것과 그의 법을 사랑하는 것이 어떻게 연결되어 있는지 생각해 보세요. 말로는 하나님을 사랑한다고 하면서 그분의 법을 멸시한다면 결국 무엇을 말하고 있는 것입니까?  

3.     하나님의 말씀을 가르치면서 자신은 그 말씀대로 살지 못해서 양심의 가책을 받은 적이 있습니까? 말과 행동의 일치를 위하여 어떤 노력을 하고 있습니까?  

감사 나누기: 하나님께 감사드릴 것이 있으면 나누어 보세요. 예수님과 어떤 사귐 가운데 살았는지 나누어 보세요.

기도하기: 하나님의 법의 기준 보다는 우리의 기준과 기분에 따라 행한 것을 고백합니다. 다른 사람들에게는 이렇게 저렇게 하라고 가르치면서 정작 우리는 그대로 행하지 않은 우리의 이중성을 용서해 주세요. 하나님 사랑의 법을 사랑하며 그 기준에 따라 살 수 있도록 우리의 의지를 새롭게 해 주세요. 우리 마음에 깊이 뿌린 내린 위선을 버리고 주님의 마음을 배우게 하소서.

Opening Prayer: We are so grateful that you have made this world so beautiful and let us live there. We give thanks to you for your loving care. Please, help us worship you in truth and spirit now. O Father, accept our worship gladly.

Lesson: Read Matt. 5:17-19 together: ¹⁷ "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.¹⁸ For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.¹⁹ Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Theme: True disciples practice righteousness, not hypocritically, but sincerely, according to God’s moral standard.

Some argue that they don’t need to keep the law because they are saved by grace. Others argue they should keep the law in order to be saved. But Jesus neither abolished the law nor set it as a way to salvation. He was denounced as an anti-legalist by the Pharisees. But He exposed the sin of hypocritical, superficial, and formalistic law-keeping of the Pharisees. Jesus teaches His disciples to do righteousness sincerely according to God’s moral law. We shall deal with this point today.

First, true disciples rejoice in living according to God’s law. Jesus acknowledged the absolute authority of the Law and the Prophets, that is, the entire Old Testament. He lived a perfect life according to the word of God. He said, “Though heaven and earth may pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law and all shall come pass.” Indeed, it was Jesus who accomplished the perfect righteousness required by the law. “Righteousness” refers to conformity to a standard. The standard here is the law of God, which is summed up in the love command for God and neighbor. It is grounded in the moral character of God; so, it is timeless. It is the absolute standard for the life of discipleship. In a modern world where people live according to what’s right in their eyes, we love and keep the law of love because we love Jesus.   

Second, true disciples always try to practice righteousness faithfully. They always strive to practice righteousness of the heart in accordance with the standard of God’s law. But many Christians attempt to live a life of faith according to their feelings, impressions, or moods. This is wrong, certain to fail. Those who rely on the love of the Lord on the cross seek the Lord’s grace so as to practice the righteousness of love. Faithfulness required by the law of God is not momentary. Many people act like believers only on Sunday. But true disciples always keep faithful to God according to the law of love. Knowing the law of God is eternal, we must faithfully do its righteousness regardless of cultural atmospheres, peer pressures, or personal moods.  

Third, true disciples strive to do all requirements of the law. Some arbitrarily judge the weightiness or lightness of the commandments and teach others accordingly. They lower the weight of a certain commandment to their levels so that they can keep it. Evaluating a relative importance of commandment and changing its requirement at one’s pleasure are a gross sin. But our problem is that we teach others to do this or that but we don’t keep it for ourselves. The Pharisees had the problem. Though they were least in the kingdom of God, they considered themselves great. They fell into self-inconsistency and pride. We should not judge arbitrarily relative importance of commandment. Rather, we should practice all its requirements. It is impossible for us to keep them without the Lord’s help. The Lord’s grace enables us to keep His law, that is, the law of love.         

Application

1.      How do you feel when you hear the phrase “the law of God?” Do you feel burdensome and desire to avoid it? Or do you love and cherish it? See how much the psalmist loves the law of God as you read Ps. 119:97-105.    

2.     See how loving God is related to loving His commandments. If you say you love God and yet disregards His law, what are you saying after all? 

3.     Have you ever got your conscience pricked by your hypocrisy that you teach others with God’s Word and yet you fail to keep it? What efforts do you make to keep unity between your word and your action?

Closing Prayer: We confess that we have lived according to our standards or moods rather than the standard of God’s law. Please, forgive us our hypocrisy that we teach others to do this or that and yet you don’t do accordingly. Please, renew our will so that we love God’s law of love and live according to its standard. Please, help us abandon hypocrisy deeply rooted in our hearts and learn the heart of the Lord.
