의에 주리고 목마른 자의 행복

찬양하기: 368장-주 예수여 은혜를

기도하기: 오늘도 인도해 주시고 지켜 주신 하나님 아버지께 감사와 영광을 돌립니다. 우리 가족이 예배하도록 한 자리에 모아 주신 하나님을 찬양합니다. 주님이 이곳에 우리와 함께 계심을 알게 하소서. 우리의 주리고 목마른 영혼에 생수와 같은 주님의 은혜와 사랑을 부어 주세요.

말씀 배우기: 마태복음 5:6을 함께 읽습니다: “의에 주리고 목마른 자는 복이 있나니 저희가 배부를 것임이요”

주제-하나님과의 바른 관계를 갈망하는 자들은 참된 만족을 얻습니다.

마음을 사로잡고 몰입하게 하는 무엇인가를 행할 때 사람은 행복을 느낍니다. 예수님은 “의”에 몰입하는 자, 곧 “의에 주리고 목마른 자”가 행복하다고 말씀하십니다. 사람의 몸이 음식을 먹고 마셔야 살듯 사람의 영혼도 “의”를 먹고 마셔야 삽니다. 그런데 사람들은 의보단 죄로 영혼의 갈증을 풀려고 애씁니다. 죄는 먹으면 먹을수록 죽음에 이르는 갈증만 더 할 뿐입니다. 반면에 의는 먹으면 먹을수록 행복을 더 합니다. 의에 대한 갈망이 참된 만족에 이르는 길입니다. 오늘은 행복에 이르는 영적 사모함이 어떤 것인지 살펴 보려 합니다.

먼저 이러한 영적 사모함은 “의”에 대한 갈망이어야 합니다. “의”는 하나님의 법을 마음과 행동으로 완전하게 지키는 것입니다. “의에 대한 갈망” 은 하나님 앞에서 바르게 살고자 하는 열망입니다. 하나님과의 바른 관계를 갈망하는 것입니다. 아담과 하와는 선악과를 먹으므로 원래의 의와 거룩과 하나님과의 교제를 잃어버렸습니다. 현대인들은 그들이 무엇을 상실한지도 모르고 마음의 공허함을 온갖 것으로 채우려 합니다. 하지만 참된 행복은 하나님과의 바른 관계인 의에서 옵니다. 의를 갈망하는 자들은 용서의 행복과 의의 평강이 어떤 것인지 압니다.

둘째, 영적 사모함은 신자 됨의 참된 표입니다. 살아 있는 자만이 배고픔과 갈증을 느낍니다. 마찬가지로 참된 신자만 의에 대한 영적 배고픔과 갈증을 느낍니다. 이들은 그리스도와 그의 의, 하나님과의 교제, 말씀, 기도, 예배, 교회 등에 대한 배고픔과 갈증을 느낍니다. 이들은 믿음으로 그리스도의 완전한 의를 선물로 받았습니다. 이들은 불의로 아파하는 사회적 약자에게 정의가 이루어지길 힘씁니다. 이들은 다시는 주리거나 목 마르지 않을 영원한 나라를 소망하며 살아갑니다. 이들의 하나님에 대한 배고픔과 갈증은 굶주려 죽어가는 자의 것과 같이 강렬합니다. 이들은 시편 기차처럼 고백합니다: “하나님이여 사슴이 시냇물을 찾기에 갈급함 같이 내 영혼이 주를 찾기에 갈급하니이다”(시 42:1).

셋째, 영적 사모함은 오직 하나님만이 채워 주십니다. 영적 갈증은 장난감, 신제품, 종교, 정치인, 연예인, 드라마, 영화, 스포츠, 돈, 지식, 명예, 쾌락이 채워줄 수 없습니다. 본문에 쓰인  헬라어 동사 “코르타조”는 가축이 구유에 있는 먹이를 더 이상 먹을 수 없을 때까지 만족스럽게 먹는 것을 뜻합니다. 예수님은 우리의 영혼을 만족케 하는 영원한 샘물이며 생명의 양식이십니다 (요4:14; 6:35). 예수님은 어린양의 혼인잔치를 베풀어 주셔서 우리로 영원히 배고프지 않고 목마르지 않도록 채워 주실 것입니다. 이러한 소망은 우리로 매일 하나님과 바른 관계 속에 살게 합니다. 이것이 의로 배부른 자의 행복입니다.

적용 나누기

1.      여러분은 무엇에 몰입할 때 행복감을 느끼십니까? 여러분의 삶을 이끌어가는 영적 갈증은 어떤 것입니까?

2.     죄에 대한 욕망과 의에 대한 갈망은 어떻게 다르며 각기 그 결과가 어떻게 다른지 생각해 보세요.

3.     영혼의 굶주림과 목마름으로 인해 죽을 지경이 되어 보신 적이 있습니까? 그래서 하나님을 절박하게 찾아 보신 적이 있습니까? 하나님이 여러분의 갈망을 어떻게 채워 주셨는지 함께 나누어 보세요.    

감사 나누기: 하나님께 감사드릴 것이 있으면 나누어 보세요. 한 주간 예수님과 어떤 사귐 가운데 살았는지 나누어 보세요.

기도하기: 주님, 주님이 우리의 만족과 행복이 됨을 고백합니다. 세상의 장난감으로 우리 영혼의 갈증을 풀려고 했던 어리석음을 용서해 주세요. 사랑의 법을 지키며 하나님과 바른 관계 속에 살수 있도록 도와주세요. 주님의 임재로 우리 영혼의 갈망을 채워주세요.

Opening Prayer: We give thanks and glory to you, O God our Father, for your guidance and protection today. We praise you that you have gathered together our family here to worship you. Please, let us know you are here with us. Pour out the living water of your grace and love into our hungry and thirsty souls.  

Lesson: Read Matt. 5:6 together: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Theme: Those who thirst for a right relation to God find true contentment.

When we do something that captivates and absorbs our hearts, we feel happy. Jesus says that happy are those who are absorbed with “righteousness,” that is, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. As man’s body lives by eating and drinking, so man’s soul lives by eating and drinking “righteousness.” But people try to quench their thirst with sin rather than righteousness. The more they consume “sin,” the thirstier they get. On the contrary, the more they eat “righteousness,” the happier they get. Thirst for righteousness is a way to true contentment. Today, we will see what spiritual longing leading to happiness is all about.

First, spiritual longing is to be a thirst for righteousness. “Righteousness” here refers to perfectly keeping the law of God with heart and action. “Thirst for righteousness” means a passionate desire to live right before God. It is a thirst for a right relation to God. By eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, Adam and Eve lost original righteousness, holiness, and fellowship with God. Moderns try to fill a void in their hearts with all kinds of things without knowing what they have lost. But true happiness comes from righteousness, that is, a right relationship with God. Those who thirst for righteousness know what happiness of forgiveness and peace of righteousness are all about.   

Second, spiritual longing is a true mark of believers. Only those who are alive feel hunger and thirst. Likewise, true believers feel hunger and thirst for righteousness. They feel hunger and thirst for Christ and His righteousness, a fellowship with God, Word, prayer, worship, and church, etc. They have received Christ’s perfect righteousness by faith. They practice social justice for the socially marginalized who suffer from injustice. They live in hope of the eternal kingdom in which there shall be no more hunger and thirst. Their hunger and thirst for God is like that of those dying of hunger and thirst. They speak along with the psalmist as follows: “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God” (Ps. 42:1)   

Thirst, spiritual longing is satisfied only by God. Spiritual thirst can’t be quenched by toys, new products, religions, politicians, celebrities, movies, sports, money, knowledge, fame, or pleasures. The Greek verb “chortazo” refers to having one’s fill to the fullest, for instance, the livestock gorging themselves until they can’t take more from their troughs. Jesus is the eternal living water and bread of life that fills our souls to the fullest (Jn. 4:14; 6:35). He shall hold the Marriage Supper of the Lamb and satisfy us until we shall be no longer hungry and thirsty. Such a hope leads us to live in a right relation to God. Such is the happiness of those satisfied with righteousness.    

Application

1.      By being absorbed by what do you feel happy? What is your spiritual thirst that drives your life?

2.     Think about how different lust for sin and thirst for righteousness are from each other and in their respective consequences.

3.     Have you ever felt as if you were dying of hunger and thirst of your soul? And have you sought God so desperately? Share with one another your story of how God has filled your spiritual thirst.

Closing Prayer: O Lord, we confess you as our contentment and happiness. Please, forgives us our folly that we have attempted to fill our spiritual thirst with toys of this world. Please, help us to live in a right relation to you as we keep the law of love. Fill our spiritual thirst with your presence.
