출애굽기 40: 성막 건축 공사가 완료됩니다. 모세는 여호와의 지시대로 성막을 세웁니다. 또한 그는 아론과 그 아들들을 성막에서 섬기는 일을 하도록 성별합니다. 그 후에 여호와의 영광이 성막 위에 임합니다. 이는 이스라엘의 예배 중심처인 성막 위에 임하신 여호와의 임재를 상징합니다.

오늘의 묵상: 시작, 끝, 그리고 새로운 시작

인생에는 수많은 일과 사건이 있고 시작과 끝이 있습니다. 성막 공사도 시작이 있고 끝이 있었습니다. 출애굽기도 이와 같이 시작과 끝이 있습니다.

출애굽기 초반부는 이스라엘 백성들의 고통 소리로 시작합니다. 하지만 결론에는 구속 받은 이스라엘  가운데 임하신 하나님의 영광을 보여줍니다. 앞으로 하나님의 영광스러운 임재가 이스라엘 백성을 약속의 땅으로 이끌 것입니다. 이것은 새로운 시작입니다. 출애굽기의 결론은 이러한 시작을 예고합니다.

이는 처음과 나중이신 하나님의 주권적 역사입니다. 고통 중에 부르짖는 백성 가운데 친히 내려 오셔서 바로의 속박에서 구속하시고 그 백성 중에 거하시는 하나님의 언약적 은혜입니다.

성막은 하나님의 역사입니다. 그리고 그 백성들의 순종의 열매입니다. 건축 과정은 순종으로 진행되었고 그 결실로 성막이 지어졌습니다. 그런 순종에 대한 하나님의 반응은 그분의 영광이었습니다. 구약에서 성막을 통하여 임재하신 하나님의 영광은 신약에서 육신을 입고 오신 예수 그리스도에게서 나타납니다.

출애굽기 마지막 절과 요한복음 1:14은 다음과 같이 말합니다: "낮에는 여호와의 구름이 성막 위에 있고 밤에는 불이 그 구름 가운데 있음을 이스라엘의 온 족속이 그 모든 행하는 길에서 친히 보았더라"/ "말씀이 육신이 되어 우리 가운데 거하시매 우리가 그 영광을 보니 아버지의 독생자의 영광이요 은혜와 진리가 충만하더라."

여기서  "거하시매"란 단어는 구약의 성막과 같은 뜻입니다. 믿는 자들이 보았던 그리스도의 영광을 성막에 내린 여호와의 영광에 비유한 것입니다. 예수님의 영광은 그 백성에게 은혜와 진리를 나타냅니다. 진정 예수 그리스도는 그 백성 가운데 친히 내려오신 하나님이십니다.

이스라엘 백성은 광야 여정을 통하여 가나안 땅으로 나아갔습니다. 구름기둥과 불기둥을 보며 하나님의 인도하심을 따라갔습니다. 이제 우리는 우리와 성령으로 함께 하시는 예수님을 따라 영원한 가나안으로 여행하고 있는 것입니다. 믿음으로 예수님과 동행하는 것이 하나님의 영광을 보고 경험하며 따라가는 것입니다. 우리의 모든 새로운 시작은 예수님의 영광과 동행하는 것으로 이어져야 합니다. 우리가 걷는 믿음의 여정의 끝은 하나님의 영광입니다.

오늘의 묵상 질문  

이스라엘 백성들은 성막을 만드는 것도 세우는 것도 모두 여호와의 말씀을 따라 했습니다. 이에 대한 여호와의 반응은 그의 영광으로 성막을 채운 것입니다. 또한 그의 영광스러운 임재가 이스라엘을 가나안 땅으로 인도한 것입니다. 여러분은 이러한 사실을 통하여 무엇을 배우십니까? 여러분은 순종의 복이 하나님의 영광스런 임재를 목격하고 경험하며 따르는 것임을 믿습니까? 여러분의 순종과 하나님의 영광을 경험하는 것과는 어떤 연관이 있는지 묵상해 보세요.

심화 묵상 질문

1.      “여호와께서 모세에게 명하신 대로”란 구절은 십계명이 하나님의 계시로 주어진 것과 같이 성막도 하나님의 계시로 만들어진 것임을 말해줍니다. 하나님 나라의 사역은 하나님의 말씀에서 시작하여 인도함을 받아야 합니다. 여러분은 말씀의 인도하심을 따라 하나님 나라의 사역을 행하십니까?

2.     우리는 종종 목적이 수단을 정당화한다는 생각을 받아들입니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리가 그의 일을 그의 영광을 위하여 그의 정하신 방법대로 하시길 원하십니다. 모세와 이스라엘은 여호와의 명령대로 성막 공사의 모든 일을 시행하였습니다. 복권에 당첨된 돈으로 하나님의 사역에 크게 기여하는 것은 옳지 않습니다. 어떤 일을 하기 전에 이 두 가지를 질문해 보아야 합니다: 이 일의 목적은 무엇인가? 이 일을 이루기 위해 내가 취할 수 있는 성경적 방법은 무엇인가?

3.     모세는 거룩한 섬김의 사역에서 어떤 물품이나 사람을 성별할 때 무엇을 사용하였습니까?(9-15절) 이것은 신약에서 무엇을 상징합니까? 여러분은 하나님을 섬길 때 무엇으로 충만하길 구하십니까?

4.     이스라엘 사람들은 애굽에서는 노예였지만 이제는 전능한 하나님의 소유된 백성이 되었습니다. 이스라엘 백성과 우리 사이에 유사한 것들을 볼 수 있습니다. 우리도 전에는 죄와 허물로 죽었습니다. 하지만 이제는 거룩한 제사장이요, 택하신 나라요, 예수 그리스도의 신부입니다. 우리는 우리의 신분에 있어서 엄청난 변화를 경험했습니다. 이제 우리는 죄에 종 노릇하는 사람들이 아니라 하나님의 섬기는 종들이 되었습니다.

5.     성막 공사에서 두드러진 점은 하나님의 말씀대로 이루어졌다는 것입니다. "여호와께서 모세에게 명하신 대로"와 비슷한 표현이 39-40장에서 16번 등장합니다. 모세는 성막이 완공된 후에도 가장 좋고 합리적인 방법으로 성막을 세우는데 그의 자유를 행사하지 않습니다. 여러분은 이러한 점을 통해서 무엇을 배우십니까?

6.     성막을 적절하게 관리하는 데는 상당한 노력과 협력이 필요하였습니다. 이제 우리는 하나님의 교회를 관리하는데 어떤 부분을 감당하고 있는지 질문해 보아야 합니다. 어떤 이는 설거지를 하고 교회를 청소하며 잔디를 깎는 일은 전혀 영적인 일로 보이지 않는다고 생각할 지도 모릅니다. 하지만 이러한 일들도 교회 사역에 중요한 일이며 하나님을 예배하는데도 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 우리는 기억해야 합니다.

7.     여호와는 어떤 방법으로 완성된 성막을 인정하고 받으셨습니까?(34-35절) 여러분은 하나님의 명하신 일을 말씀 대로 순종하여 행할 때 무엇을 경험하십니까? 하나님의 명령을 이룬 것에 대한 성취감을 느끼십니까? 하나님께서 여러분의 마음에 무엇을 주십니까? 

8.     여호와는 가나안까지의 여정에서 어떤 방법으로 이스라엘을 인도하셨습니까?(36-38절) 여러분은 매일 믿음 여정에서 하나님의 인도하심을 따르십니까 아니면 자기의 생각을 따르십니까? 하나님은 말씀과 성령을 통하여 우리를 인도하십니다. 그런데 우리는 종종 그 인도하심을 거부하기도 합니다. 하나님의 인도하심을 받는다는 것은 어떤 것일까요? 하나님의 인도하심을 받기 위해서는 어떻게 해야 할까요?

Exodus 40: The building of the tabernacle has been completed. Now, Moses erects it according to God’s instructions. He also consecrates Aaron and his sons to serve God in the tabernacle. Then, God’s glory falls upon the tabernacle and covers it, which symbolizes God’s presence over the tabernacle, the central place of Israel’s religious worship.

Meditation for Today: Beginning, end, and New Beginning

There are a great number of tasks and incidents in life. And there is a beginning and end. There was the beginning and the ending of the construction of the tabernacle. Also, there is the beginning and the end in the book of Exodus. The first part of Exodus begins with the cries of the Israelites in suffering. But the conclusion of Exodus ends with the God’s glorious presence in the midst of His redeemed people. God’s glorious presence will lead the people of Israel to the Promised Land. This is a new beginning. The ending of Exodus notifies such a new beginning beforehand.  This is the work of the sovereign God who is the first and the last. He Himself has come down to His crying people, delivered them from the bondage of Pharoah, and dwelt in their midst, all of which evidence God’s covenantal grace. The tabernacle is the product of God’s work. And it is an outcome of Israel’s obedience. The construction of the tabernacle has progressed by obedience. God’s response to their obedience is the glory of God. God’s glorious presence revealed in the tabernacle in the OT is seen in Jesus Christ the Incarnate of God. The last verse of Exodus and Jn. 1:14 say as follows: “For the cloud of the LORD was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys”; “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” The word “dwelt” here means the same with the word “tabernacled.” The glory of Christ witnessed by believers is compared to the glory of Yahweh descended upon the tabernacle. The glory of Jesus is manifested to His people by grace and truth. Indeed, Jesus Christ is God who came down to His own people. The people of Israel journeyed through the wilderness toward the land of Canaan. They followed the guidance of God as they saw the pillars of cloud and fire. Now, we are journeying toward eternal Canaan by following Jesus being with us through the Holy Spirit. Walking with Jesus by faith is beholding, experiencing, and following God’s glory. All our new beginnings are to be led to walking with the glory of Jesus. The end of our faith journey is the glory of God.  

Today’s Question for Reflection

The people of Israel constructed and erected the tabernacle according to Yahweh’s instructions. Yahweh’s response to this was His filling the tabernacle with His glory. Also, His glorious presence led them to the Promised Land. What do you learn from these facts? Do you believe the blessings of obedience is to witness, experience, and follow God’s glorious presence? Meditate on how your obedience is related to experiencing God’s glory.   

In-depth Questions for Reflection

1.      The clause “as the LORD had commanded Moses” suggests that the entire work of the Tabernacle is a product of revelation as much as were the Ten Commandments. The ministries of the kingdom of God are to originate from God’s word and receive the guidance of God’s word. Do you do the ministries of the kingdom of God according to the guidance of God’s word?

2.     We often adopt the end justifies the means. However, God wants us to do His work for His glory in His way. Moses and the Israelites performed all the works of the tabernacle according to God’s instructions. It is wrong to make generous contributions to God’s service with lottery money. We should ask ourselves the two questions before we do anything: What is the purpose of this task? What is a biblical way that I can fulfill this task?

3.     What did Moses use to set something or someone apart for the service of holy God? (vv. 9-15) What does it symbolize in the NT? What do you seek to be filled when you serve God?

4.     Though they used to be slaves in Egypt, now the Israelites were the possessed treasure of the almighty God. We can see parallels between the Israelites and us. We were dead in trespasses and sins. But, we are the royal priesthood, the chosen nation, and the Bride of Jesus Christ. We went through the tremendous change of our status. We no longer are the servants of sin but servants of God.

5.     The outstanding point in the tabernacle project is everything was completed according to God’s instructions. The phrase “as the LORD had commanded Moses” or something similar to it in Ex. 39-40 occur 16 times. Moses refused to Moses didn’t exercise his freedom to erect the tabernacle in the way that he thought to be best and reasonable (v. 16). What do you learn from this point?

6.     The proper maintenance of the tabernacle required a great effort and cooperation from all. Now, we need to ask ourselves what part we are taking in the physical care of God’s church. Some may think that washing dishes, cleaning up the sanctuary, or mowing grass may not seem very spiritual. But we should realize that they are vital to the ministry of the church and have an important role in our worship of God.

7.     In what way did Yahweh show His approval of the completed work of the tabernacle? (vv. 34-35) What do you experience when you do God-commanded tasks in obedience to God’s Word? Do you feel a sense of achievement for fulfilling God’s command? What does God grant you in your heart?

8.     In what way did Yahweh guide the Israelites throughout their journey to the Promised Land? (vv. 36-38) Do you follow God’s guidance daily in your faith journey or do you follow your thoughts? God guides us through His Word and Spirit. But we often refuse to follow His guidance. What does it mean to follow God’s guidance? What are we to do in order to receive God’s guidance?
