은혜와 겸손(Grace and Humility)

1986년 여름, 러시아 연안 흑해에서 두 척의 배가 충돌하는 사고가 발생했습니다. 수백 명의 승객이 얼음 바다에 휩쓸려 사망했습니다. 조사 결과 사고의 원인이 밝혀지면서 이 참사에 대한 소식은 더욱 어두워졌습니다. 레이더 오작동이나 짙은 안개와 같은 기술적인 문제가 아니었습니다. 원인은 인간의 고집이었습니다. 각 선장은 근처에 다른 선박이 있다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 두 배 모두 피할 수 있었지만, 뉴스 보도에 따르면 두 선장 모두 상대방에게 양보하고 싶지 않았다고 합니다. 각자 자존심이 너무 세서 먼저 양보할 수 없었기 때문입니다. 정신을 차렸을 때는 이미 너무 늦은 후였습니다. 잠언 18장 12절이 얼마나 맞는 말입니까!: “사람의 마음의 교만은 멸망의 선봉이요 겸손은 존귀의 앞잡이니라.” 바울은 겸손한 복음의 사역자였습니다. 그는 그리스도와 그분의 복음과 교회를 위해 살다가 죽었습니다. 바울은 교회에 분열이나 갈등을 일으키기보다는 그리스도의 교회 안에서 유대인 그리스도인과 이방인 그리스도인의 일치를 위해 일한 복음의 사역자였습니다. 유대인 그리스도인들과 달리 바울은 이방인 그리스도인들 앞에서 자신을 낮추고 그들이 하나님의 가족 안에서 동등한 공동 상속자이며 그리스도의 몸의 동등한 지체이며 복음을 통해 그리스도 안에서 약속의 동등한 참여자임을 상기시켰습니다. 기독교 역사에서 바울은 위대한 전도자, 성경 해설자, 교회 개척자, 심오한 신학자, 그리스도의 진정한 추종자라고 불릴 수 있습니다. 하나님의 종으로서 그가 이룬 모든 위대한 업적에도 불구하고 그는 자신을 “모든 성도 중에 지극히 작은 자보다 더 작은 자로” 여겼습니다. 이는 그리스도의 측량할 수 없는 은혜 풍성함을 영화롭게 하기 위한 것이었습니다. 그렇기 때문에 그는 하나님의 영광을 위해 그리스도의 사도로서의 사명을 완수할 수 있었습니다. 그는 자신의 인종이나 지위, 업적을 자랑하지 않았습니다. 그는 하나님과 사람들 앞에서 자신을 낮추었기 때문에 복음 사역을 수행하고 교회의 일치를 위해 일할 수 있었습니다. 필립 부룩스는 다음과 같이 말하였습니다: "겸손해지는 진정한 방법은 자신보다 작아질 때까지 몸을 굽히는 것이 아니라, 자신의 위대함의 진정한 작음이 무엇인지 보여줄 어떤 높은 자연에 대비하여 자신의 진짜 크기 대로 서 보는 것입니다" 그의 말처럼, 이 우주의 헤아릴 수 없는 위대함에 비하여 여러분이 얼마나 작고 유한한 존재인지를 생각해 보세요. 그런 다음 하나님의 완전한 거룩함과 의로움에 비추어 자신이 얼마나 죄 많고 사악한 존재인지 생각해 보세요. 그리고 성령을 통해 여러분의 마음에 부어 주신 하나님의 은혜의 광대함을 보세요. 그리스도 안에서 여러분이 어떤 존재인지, 즉 은혜로 의롭게 되고 구속되고 거룩해진 죄인이라는 사실을 기억하세요. 은혜는 자신을 낮추고 하나님을 높이게 합니다. 또한 복음을 통해 다른 사람들을 겸손하게 섬기게 합니다. 

In the summer of 1986, two ships collided in the Black Sea off the coast of Russia. Hundreds of passengers died as they were hurled into the icy waters below. News of the disaster was further darkened when an investigation revealed the cause of the accident. It wasn't a technology problem like radar malfunction--or even thick fog. The cause was human stubbornness. Each captain was aware of the other ship's presence nearby. Both could have steered clear, but according to news reports, neither captain wanted to give way to the other. Each was too proud to yield first. By the time they came to their senses, it was too late. How true Proverbs 18:12 is!: “Before destruction a man's heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.” Paul was a humble minister of the gospel. He lived and died for Christ, His gospel, and His church. Rather than causing a division or conflict in the church, Paul was a minister of the gospel who worked for the unity of Jewish Christians and Gentiles Christians in the church of Christ. Unlike Jewish Christians, Paul humbled himself before Gentile Christians and reminded them they were equal coheirs in the family of God, equal members of the body of Christ, and equal participants of the promise in Christ through the gospel. In Christian history, Paul may be called a greatest evangelist, Bible expositor, church planter, profound theologian, and authentic follower of Christ. Despite all his great achievements as God’s servant, he regarded himself as “less than the least of all saints” to magnify the unfathomable riches of Christ’s grace. For this reason, he was able to finish his course as an apostle of Christ for God’s glory. He was not proud of his race, position, or achievements. He humbled himself before God and others; so, he was enabled to carry out his gospel ministry and work for the unity of the church. Phillip Brooks said, "The true way to be humble is not to stoop until you are smaller than yourself, but to stand at your real height against some higher nature that will show you what the real smallness of your greatness is.” As he said, see how small and finite you are, compared to the immeasurable greatness of this universe. Then, think about how sinful and vile you are in light of God’s perfect holiness and righteousness. Turn to see the immensity of God’s grace poured out into your heart through the Holy Spirit. Remember what you are in Christ: sinners justified, redeemed, and sanctified by grace. Grace makes you humble yourself and exalt God. Also, it makes you humbly serve others through the gospel.
