사랑의 힘(The power of love)

사람들은 힘을 추구합니다. 무거운 물건을 나를 수 있는 힘, 전쟁터에서 원수를 무찌를 수 있는 힘, 역경 중에 견디는 힘, 글을 쓰는 힘, 사람들에게 선한 영향력을 미치는 힘, 사람을 치료하거나 설득하거나 공감하는 힘 등 다양한 힘이 있습니다. 그런데 이러한 힘을 소유한 자들이 그 힘을 잘못된 것에 사용하면 그것은 악이 될 수 있습니다. 남을 살리는 데 사용된 수술칼과 살인하는데 사용된 식칼에서 힘이 어떻게 사용되야 하는지를 느낄 수 있습니다. 선한 목적을 위하여 힘이 사용될 때 그 가치가 있는 것입니다. 우리도 매일을 살기 위해서는 힘이 필요합니다. 많은 이들이 신체적, 지적 능력이 부족함을 느낍니다. 또한 더욱 많은 이들은 이웃과 더불어 살아갈 때 필요한 공감 능력이 부족함을 고백합니다. 어려운 역경을 지나며 견딜 수 있는 힘이 부족한 것을 고백하는 이들도 많습니다. 특히 크리스천들은 죄, 악한 세상, 사탄을 대적하는데 영적인 힘이 부족한 것을 알고 있습니다. 크리스천들은 어디에서 믿음의 삶을 지탱하며 유지해 나갈 힘을 발견할 수 있을까요? 영적 전쟁에서 승리할 수 있는 힘은 어디에 있는 것일까요? 우리는 하나님의 능력을 의지하는 데서 그 힘을 발견할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 전능하시며 항상 그의 선한 목적을 이루는데 그 능력을 사용하십니다. 그런데 하나님의 전능하신 것과 우리와 무슨 상관이 있는 것일까요? 그분의 능력을 우리가 사용하지 못한다면 우리는 여전히 연약하고 신자로서의 삶을 바르게 살아갈 수 없을 것입니다. 세상의 최고 부자의 재력을 그 자녀들은 어느 정도 사용할 수 있어서 유익을 얻을 수 있습니다. 하지만 우리와 그들은 아무런 관계가 없기에 그들의 재력은 우리에게 아무런 소용이 없습니다. 때때로 우리는 하나님의 전능과 관련하여 이렇게 느낄 때가 있습니다. 하나님의 능력을 전혀 사용하지 못하는 것입니다. 물론 우리의 사적인 목적을 위하여 우리가 하나님의 능력을 마음대로 사용할 수 있는 것은 아닙니다. 하지만 하나님은 성령을 통하여 우리로 그의 능력을 죄, 죽음, 사탄을 대적하거나 거룩하고 선한 일을 행하는데 사용케 하십니다. 하나님의 전능은 그리스도의 십자가에서 사랑의 능력으로 나타나셨습니다. 그 사랑의 능력으로 우리는 하나님의 자녀가 되었습니다. 그 능력으로 우리는 몸의 부활을 경험케 될 것입니다. 그 사랑의 능력은 우리를 위하여 역사할 뿐만 아니라 우리 안에서 그리고 우리를 통하여 역사하십니다. 이러한 능력을 활용하는 자가 바른 신앙 생활을 살아갈 수 있습니다. 우리가 약할 때 주님의 강함은 더욱 분명하게 드러납니다.        우리가 하나님의 선하심과 능하심을 의지하며 그의 목적을 위하여 그분의 힘을 구하고 사용하는 것은 바른 것입니다.

People seek power. There are many kinds of power: the power to lift heavy objects, the power to defeat enemies on the battlefield, the power to persevere in the face of adversity, the power to write, the power to influence people for good, the power to heal or persuade or empathize with people, and so on. But when the people who possess these powers use them for the wrong things, they can become evil. The surgical knife used to save someone's life and the kitchen knife used to kill are examples of how power should be used. When power is used for good, it has value. We too need power to get through each day. Many of us lack physical and intellectual strength, and many more confess to lacking the empathy needed to live with our neighbors. Many also confess to lacking the strength to persevere through difficult adversity. Christians, in particular, know that they lack the spiritual strength to stand against sin, the evil world, and Satan. Where can Christians find the strength to sustain their faith lives? Where does the power to win spiritual battles lie? We can find that strength by relying on the power of God. God is all-powerful, and He always uses that power to accomplish His good purposes, but what does His all-powerfulness have to do with us? If we didn't have access to His power, we would still be weak and unable to live our lives as believers. The richest man in the world could have the resources of the richest man in the world, and his children could use them to some extent and benefit from them. But since we have no relationship with them, their wealth is of no use to us. Sometimes, we feel this way in relation to God's omnipotence. Of course, we don't have God's power at our disposal for our own private purposes, but through the Holy Spirit, God enables us to use his power against sin, death, and Satan, or to do holy and good works. God's omnipotence was manifested in the power of love on the cross of Christ. By that power of love, we became children of God. By that power, we will experience the resurrection of our bodies. That power of love not only works for us, it works in us and through us. It is by utilizing this power that we can live a proper life of faith. When we are weak, the Lord's strength is more evident. It is right that we rely on God's goodness and power, seeking and using his strength for His purposes.
