행복: 양심의 평화(Happiness: Peace of Conscience)

아담은 죄를 범하기 전까지 행복한 삶을 살았습니다. 그는 에덴이라는 행복한 환경에서 살았습니다. 그는 하나님과 교제하며 평안을 누렸습니다. 그는 열심히 일하며 주변을 가꾸었습니다. 하지만 죄는 이 모든 것을 빼앗아 갔습니다. 그는 처음으로 자신이 벌거벗은 몸을 의식하고 수치를 느꼈습니다. 그의 양심은 평화를 잃고 하나님으로부터 숨었습니다. 이처럼 죄는 행복을 불행으로 전락시킵니다. 오늘날 많은 현대인들이 이러한 사실을 모른 채 행복을 삶의 목적으로 추구합니다. 문제는 하나님과 자기들을 분리하는 죄의 문제를 해결하지 않은 채 행복을 추구하기에 행복에 이르지 못하는 것입니다. 그래서 더 열심히 공부하고 일하며 더욱 많이 벌고 축적해 봅니다. 자신의 가치와 능력을 인정 받으려 쉼없이 노력합니다. 그런데도 여전히 마음은 참된 만족, 행복을 알지 못합니다. 더 많이 가진 자들, 더 유명한 자들, 더 능력 있는 자들이 더 행복하다는 공식은 망상일 뿐입니다. 부, 명예, 권력이 없어도 행복한 자들이 있습니다. 이들은 있는 것에 만족하며 영혼의 행복을 누립니다. 이들의 행복은 외적인 환경이 아닌 하나님과의 관계에 의해 결정됩니다. 예수 그리스도의 십자가 죽음과 부활을 통해서 자기들의 죄와 그로 인한 형벌과 저주가 해결된 것을 믿고 양심에 자유와 평안을 누립니다. 예수님이 그들 죄의 빚을 값아 주신 것을 감사하며 기쁨으로 찬양합니다. 우리의 양심은 옳고 그름을 판단하고 잘못하면 죄책감을 느끼게 하고 잘하면 평안을 느끼게 합니다. 우리의 양심은 예수님의 보혈로 씻김을 받고 새로워졌습니다. 세상의 가치관이 아닌 하나님의 말씀으로 인도함을 받습니다. 성령님이 우리 마음 안 거하시며 양심을 바르게 사용하십니다. 우리가 죄를 범하면 성령님은 말씀으로 그것이 잘못된 것을 보여줍니다. 그리고 회개하고 주님께로 돌아오라고 권고합니다. 우리가 회개하며 주님과의 관계를 회복하면 우리의 양심은 평안하고 행복해 집니다. 하지만 우리가 성령님을 근심케 하면 우리의 양심은 불안해 합니다. 그리고 죽음과 같은 괴로움을 경험합니다. 죄는 우리의 양심에 불안과 불행을 안겨줍니다. 우리의 어떤 노력이나 공로도 죄 문제를 해결할 수 없습니다. 오직 예수 그리스도의 보혈만이 우리 양심을 새롭게 하여 평강을 넘치게 할 수 있습니다. 하나님과 친밀한 관계 가운데 양심이 평화로운 삶을 사는 자들이 행복합니다. 우리가 행복을 위해 할 것이 있다면 행복을 따르지 말고 예수님을 따르는 것입니다. 예수님의 사랑으로 다스림과 인도함을 받는 양심은 자유 하며 평화롭습니다. 우리의 행복은 바로 이런 것입니다.      

Adam lived a happy life until he sinned. He lived in a blissful environment called Eden. He had peace in communion with God. He worked hard and cultivated his surroundings. But sin took all of this away. For the first time, he was conscious of his naked body and felt shame. His conscience lost its peace and he hid from God. In this way, sin turns happiness into misery. Many modern people today are unaware of this fact and pursue happiness as the purpose of life. The problem is that they pursue happiness without resolving the problem of sin that separates them from God; so, they try to study harder, work harder, and earn and accumulate more. They work tirelessly to prove their worth and ability, but still their hearts do not know true contentment, happiness. The formula that those who have more, those who are more famous, those who are more capable are happier is just a delusion. There are those who are happy without wealth, honor, or power. They are content with what they have, and their souls are happy. Their happiness is determined by their relationship with God, not their external circumstances. They have freedom and peace of conscience because they believe that their sins and the punishment and curse they deserve have been resolved through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. They give thanks and joyfully praise Jesus for paying the debt of their sins. Our conscience judges right and wrong, making us feel guilty when we do wrong and peaceful when we do right. Our conscience has been washed and renewed by the blood of Jesus. It is guided by God's Word, not the world's values. The Holy Spirit lives in our hearts and uses our conscience rightly. When we sin, the Holy Spirit uses the Word to show us what is wrong and exhorts us to repent and turn to the Lord. When we repent and restore our relationship with the Lord, our conscience is at peace and happy. But if we grieve the Holy Spirit, our conscience becomes uneasy and we experience death-like anguish. Sin brings anxiety and unhappiness to our conscience. No amount of effort or merit on our part can solve the problem of sin. Only the blood of Jesus Christ can renew our conscience and make it overflow with peace. Happy are those who live in a close relationship with God and have a peaceful conscience. If we have anything to do for happiness, it is not to follow happiness, but to follow Jesus. A conscience governed and guided by the love of Jesus is free and at peace. Our happiness is something like this.
