참된 자유(True Freedom)

크리스천의 자유는 죄와 사망에서 해방된 것을 뜻합니다. 우리는 그리스도의 십자가 대속의 죽음을 통하여 죄의 속박, 사망의 두려움, 지옥의 공포에서 해방되었습니다. 예수님은 “진리를 알지니 진리가 너희를 자유케 하리라”고 말씀하셨습니다(요 8:32). 진리는 예수님입니다. 예수님이 어떤 분이시며, 어떤 일을 행하셨는지에 대한 지식, 그리고 그분과 맺은 관계는 우리를 죄의 노예에서 자유케 합니다. 그런데 이러한 자유는 죄에서 해방된 된 자유에서 그치지 않고 하나님의 뜻을 따라 행하는 자유도 뜻합니다. 참된 자유는 죄를 거부하고 의를 선택하는 것입니다. 우리는 마음 대로 행하는 것을 자유라고 생각하는 경향이 있습니다. 먹고 싶은 대로 먹고 듣고 싶은 것을 듣고 하기 싫은 것은 하지 않는 것이 자유라 생각합니다. 그리고 이러한 자유가 우리를 행복하게 해 줄 것이라고 믿습니다. 하지만 이것은 결코 믿는 자의 자유가 아닙니다. 우리의 마음은 여전히 죄를 향하여 기울어져 있기 때문입니다. 우리의 마음에는 미움, 질투, 음란, 살인, 폭력, 용서치 않음, 원수 맺음 등이 있습니다. 우리가 이러한 마음 대로 행한다면 우리를 스스로 속박하고 결코 행복하지 못할 것입니다. 오히려 죄의 중독자가 될 것입니다. 예를 들면 과거 친구로부터 상처를 받고 용서치 않는 사람이 있습니다. 원수 갚을 때까지는 잠도 제대로 자지 못합니다. 그 마음은 온통 친구를 향한 미움, 저주, 원수 갚음으로 가득합니다. 그는 구원 받았다고 말은 하지만 여전히 미움의 노예가 되어 있습니다. 그는 음식을 먹어도 가슴이 답답하고 소화를 시키지 못합니다. 그에게 자유는 이러한 죄에서 해방되는 것입니다. 뿐만 아니라 상처를 준 친구를 용서하고 축복할 때 완전히 자유해 집니다. 죄의 조정을 거부하고 사랑을 선택하는 것이 참된 자유입니다. 우리는 사단의 종이 아니라 하나님의 종입니다. 사단에게서 해방되어 하나님을 사랑으로 섬기는 자유가 있습니다. 사단은 마음대로 행하면 행복할 것이라는 우리를 속이려 합니다. 하지만 하나님은 그 말씀을 따라 행하면 행복하다는 진리를 말씀해 주십니다. 하나님은 이스라엘을 바로의 구속에서 해방시켜 주셨습니다. 그런데 이들이 금송아지를 만들고 우상 숭배를 범하였습니다. 음식 문제가 있을 때 마다 애굽으로 돌아가자고 불평하였습니다. 이들은 애굽을 떠난 후에도 여전히 애굽의 문화와 습관에 조종당하고 있었습니다. 이것은 참 자유가 아닙니다. 우리는 그리스도의 피로 죄에서 씻음 받았습니다. 죄를 섬길 이유가 전혀 없습니다. 마음 대로 행하는 것이 자유가 아니라 그리스도의 마음으로 행하는 것이 참 자유입니다. 그리스도 안에서 하나님의 종으로 섬기며 살 때 우리는 진정한 자유와 행복을 누리게 됩니다. 이러한 자유와 행복의 은혜를 누리시길 기원합니다. 

Christian freedom refers to a deliverance from sin and death. Through Christ’s atoning death on the cross, we have been liberated from the shackles of sin, dread of death, and terror of hell. Jesus said, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free” (Jn. 8:32). The truth refers to Jesus. Knowing who Jesus is and what He has done for us, and having a saving relationship with Him have set us from slavery of sin. Not only does this freedom refer to emancipation from sin, but also it refers to freedom to do according to God’s will. True freedom is a choice of refusing sin and doing righteousness. We tend to regard doing whatever we desire as freedom. We see eating what we desire, listening to what we want, or not doing what we dislike, as freedom. And we believe that such freedom will make us happy. But such is by no means Christian freedom. Our heart is still inclined to sin. In it, there are hatred, jealousy, fornication, murder, violence, unforgiving spirit, revenge, etc. If we follow such inclinations, we enslave ourselves and never reach happiness. Rather, we will be addicted to sin. For example, let’s suppose that there is a man having been deeply hurt by his friend refuses to forgive. Until he gets even with his friend, he can’t sleep well. His heart is wholly filled with hatred, curse, and vindictiveness against his friend. Though he claims to be saved, he is still enslaved by hatred. Each time he eats, he suffers indigestion and heartburn. As for him, freedom is an emancipation from such sin. Not only so, but also he is wholly free when he forgives and blesses his friend who hurt him so badly. Rejecting the control of sin and choosing love is true freedom. We are not servants of Satan, but servants of God. We have freedom both to have been delivered from Satan and to serve God in love. Satan tries to deceive us into doing for happiness whatever we desire. But God tells us the truth that we will be happy if we live by His Word. God set the Israelites from the bondage of Pharaoh. But they made the golden calf and committed idolatry. When they encountered food issues, they murmured. Even after they left Egypt, they were still controlled by the culture and customs of Egypt. This is not true liberty. We are washed from sin by the blood of Christ. We have no reason to serve sin. Doing things according to our desires is not freedom at all. But doing things according to the mind of Christ is true freedom. When we live in service to God in Christ, we can enjoy true freedom and happiness. It is my prayer that all of us enjoy grace of such freedom and happiness.
