“거저 받았으니 거저 주어라”(Freely you have received, freely give!)

“거저 받았느니 거주 주어라”는 예수님이 제자들을 파송 하시며 하신 말씀입니다. 마태는 예수님의 말씀을 이렇게 기록합니다: “가면서 전파하여 말하되 천국이 가까왔다 하고 병든 자를 고치며 죽은 자를 살리며 문둥이를 깨끗하게 하며 귀신을 쫓아내되 너희가 거저 받았으니 거저 주어라”(마10:7-8). 예수님은 사람들에게 값없이 천국 복음을 전하고 병든 자를 고쳐주고 귀신들린 자를 자유케 하셨습니다. 제자들은 하나님의 은혜로 선택 받고 구원받았습니다. 이들은 예수님의 삼중 사역, 곧 가르치고 전하며 치유하는 사역을 수행하도록 은혜로 세움을 받았습니다. 이들은 금전이 아닌 은혜 때문에 예수님의 사역을 수행한 것입니다. 사실 이들이 하나님께 받은 모든 것은 은혜입니다. 거저 받았기에 거저 주는 것이 기독교 사역의 핵심, 곧 “사랑의 섬김”입니다. 한마디로 믿는 자의 삶은 하나님의 은혜를 받아 누리며 나누는 것입니다. 이러한 삶은 하나님만을 높이는 참된 예배로 이어집니다. 하지만 이것과 반대되는 삶은 자기의 공로를 의지하고 자기를 높이는 자기 숭배입니다. 이것이 지옥의 정신입니다. 다음은 러시아 문호 도스토예프스키의 “카라마조프 가의 형제들”에 나오는 이야기입니다. 예수님은 지옥의 영혼들이 너무 안타까우셨습니다. 단 한 명이라도 천국으로 데려 오기 위해 천사를 지옥으로 보내셨습니다. 천사는 지옥의 고통 속에서 울부짖는 영혼들 중 한 부인에게 다가가 물었습니다. “부인, 당신이 세상에 있을 때 좋은 일 한 게 있으면 하나라도 말해 보세요.” “하나도 없어요. 아, 참! 기억나는 게 있네요. 집에 찾아온 거지에게 양파 한 개를 준 적이 있어요.” 천사가 천국 기록 보관서에 가서 확인을 해 보니 사실이었습니다. 그래서 그 양파를 찾아 다시 지옥으로 갔습니다. “주님의 은혜로 부인이 천국에 갈 수 있는 기회가 제공되었습니다. 이 양파가 천국으로 데려다 줄 증거물이니 한쪽 끝을 단단히 잡고 가시죠.” 그런데 이 모습을 지켜보던 지옥의 무리가 우르르 달려들어 너도나도 부인에게 매달렸습니다. 매달린 사람들의 무게로 양파 껍질이 벗겨질까 두려웠던 부인은 고래고래 소리쳤습니다. “이 못된 놈들아, 저리 가지 못해! 착한 일 하나 한 적 없는 너희는 지옥 불에서 고생해도 돼!” 부인의 말이 끝나자마자 잡고 있던 양파의 껍질이 홀라당 벗겨져 다시 지옥으로 떨어졌습니다. 생 양파 한 개가 텅 빈 거지의 배를 채울 수 있었을까요? 자기 의에 빠지면 하나님의 은혜를 망각하고 착각에 빠집니다. 그러면 이웃을 정죄하고 저주합니다. 이러한 마음에는 천국이 아닌 지옥이 있습니다. 우리가 하나님의 은혜를 값없이 이웃과 나눌 때 우리의 마음은 은혜로 천국을 누리게 됩니다. 

As He sent out His disciples, Jesus said, “Freely you have received, freely give.” Matthew records the words of Jesus as follows: “And proclaim as you go, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay” (Matt. 10:7-8). Jesus proclaimed the gospel of the kingdom of heaven to people, healed the sick, and delivered the demon-possessed, all of which He did for free. The disciples were chosen and saved by God’s grace. By grace, they were appointed to carry on His threefold ministry, that is, teaching, preaching, and healing. They carried out the ministry, not for money, but for grace. All they received from God was His grace. The essence of Christian ministry lies in our giving freely because we freely have received, that is, “the service of love.” In short, the life of believers is to receive, enjoy, and share God’s grace. Such a life leads to true worship exalting God alone. However, a life antithetical to it is self-worship that relies on one’s works and exalts oneself, which is the spirit of hell. Russian author Dostoevsky wrote “The Brothers Karamazov,” which contains the following story: Jesus felt so pitiful for the souls in hell. He sent an angel to hell to bring even a single soul to heaven. The angel approached a lady among the souls crying out of the pain of hell. “Please, tell me about even a good thing if you ever did while you were in the world.” “No, nothing! Wait a minute! I remember one thing. I gave one onion to a beggar who came to my house.” The angel went to the Archives in heaven and confirmed it was true. So, he found that onion out and went back to hell. “You are given a chance to go to heaven by the Lord’s grace. This onion is a token that will bring you to heaven. So, take tight hold of one end of it and go.” By the way, the crowds in hell watching the scene rushed together and clung to her one after another. She yelled at them, afraid that the onionskin might be peeled off because of the weight of the people clinging to her. “Evil things, get off of me! Having never done anything good, you deserve to suffer in the fire of hell!” As soon as she finished talking, the onionskin she held tightly was completely peeled off. So, she fell back into hell. Could one wild onion satisfy the empty stomach of that beggar? If we fall into self-righteousness, we become oblivious to God’s grace and fall into illusion. Then, we condemn and curse our neighbors. Hell, not heaven, resides in such a heart. When we freely share God’s grace with our neighbors, then our hearts enjoy heaven by grace.
