수치(Shame)

거짓말을 밥 먹듯 하면서도 부끄러움을 모르는 사람들이 있습니다. 이들은 자기들의 목적을 달성하기 위해서나 자신들의 과오를 감추기 위해서 거짓말을 진실처럼 합니다. 이들의 양심은 화인을 맞아 옳고 그름을 판단할 수 있는 기능을 못합니다. 모름지기 염치를 아는 것은 미덕입니다. 우리가 죄를 지었을 때는 양심이 부끄러워하라고 말합니다. 죄를 부끄러워하고 죄책감을 느끼는 것이 정상입니다. 아담과 하와는 선악과를 먹지 말라는 하나님의 명령을 어기고 원죄를 범하였습니다. 그후 이들은 처음으로 자신들이 벗은 것을 알고 수치를 느꼈습니다. 무과화 잎으로 엮은 치마로 자신들의 벌거벗음 것을 가리려 하였습니다. 실로 죄는 우리에게 죄책감과 수치를 가져옵니다. 죄로 인한 수치는 당연한 것입니다. 모든 사람은 죄인으로 태어나서 죄를 짓습니다. 그러므로 모든 죄인들의 영혼에는 죄로 인한 수치심이 깊이 뿌리 박고 있습니다. 어떤 사람들은 선하고 덕스러운 행위로 자신들의 수치를 가리려 합니다. 덕스러운 사람으로 인정 받고 싶어합니다. 그런데 문제는 자신들이 하나님을 떠난 죄인이라는 진실을 자신들의 덕행이나 종교적 행위로 가리려 한다는 것입니다. 종교가 지배하는 사회에서는 수치와 명예의 원칙을 중요시합니다. 그들의 신의 법이나 종교적 문화에 따라 수치와 명예를 느낍니다. 그러나 이것도 영혼의 수치를 지울 수는 없습니다. 죄로 인한 수치가 그 영혼을 짓누르는 한 영혼은 자유를 누릴 수 없습니다. 수치심은 우울증이나 다른 정신적 질환을 유발하기도 합니다. 그래서 우리는 죄로 인한 수치심을 주 예수님께 가지고 와야 합니다. 그는 십자가에서 벌거 벗고 사람들의 조롱을 당하셨습니다. 우리의 죄로 인한 수치와 저주를 짊어지신 것입니다. 예수님은 수치심으로 사람들의 눈을 피해 한낮에 물을 길러 온 수가성 여인을 찾아오셨습니다. 그는 자신의 죄로 얼룩진 과거를 아시면서도 정죄하지 않았습니다. 오히려 영원히 목마르지 않는 생수가 되어 주셨습니다. 그녀는 예수님을 그리스도를 믿게 되었습니다. 수치심의 멍에를 벗어 던지고 자기를 정죄하던 사마리아 동네 사람들에게 예수님이 그리스도이심을 전하였습니다. 예수님이 그녀 안에서 일으킨 놀라운 변화입니다. 어느 날 “더러운 여자” “저주 받은 여자”라고 낙인 찍힌 한 여인이 예수님을 찾아왔습니다. 믿음의 손을 내밀어 예수님의 옷을 만졌습니다. 그녀의 혈루 근원이 마르고 기적적으로 치유 받았습니다. 그녀의 더러움은 예수님을 더럽게 하지 않습니다. 오히려 예수님의 거룩한 능력이 그녀를 정결케 하였습니다. 예수님은 실로 삶과 사망을 다스리는 권세자입니다. 죄로 인한 수치와 정죄를 예수님께 가지고 나와야 합니다. 예수님은 그 모든 것을 십자가 죽음으로 청산하셨습니다. 예수님은 우리에게 거룩함과 순결함과 치유가 되십니다. 이제 우리는 더러움, 정죄, 수치의 속박에서 자유케 되었습니다. 이것이 바로 주님의 순전한 은혜입니다. 

Some people lie all the time and feel no shame about their lies. They tell their lies as truths to achieve their goals and cover up their wrongdoings. Their consciences are seared. They can’t function properly to tell right from wrong. Without a doubt, having a sense of shame and honor is a virtue. When we commit a sin, our conscience says we should be ashamed. It is quite normal that we feel ashamed and guilty of our sins. Adam and Eve broke God’s injunction not to eat the forbidden fruit and committed the original sin. For the first time, they realized they were naked and ashamed of it. They sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths to cover their nakedness. Indeed, sin brings us a sense of guilt and shame. Being ashamed of one’s sin is natural. Born as sinners, all people sin. So, a sense of shame caused by sin is deeply rooted in the souls of all sinners. Some people try to cover their sense of shame with their good and virtuous deeds. They desire to be approved as virtuous people. However, the real problem is that they attempt to cover the truth they are sinners who have departed from God, with their virtues or religious works. A religion-controlled community values the principle of shame and honor. They feel shame and honor according to the laws of their gods or their religious cultures. But this can’t erase the shame in their souls. As long as the shame oppresses their souls, their souls can’t enjoy liberty. A sense of shame may cause depression or other mental sicknesses. So, we must bring our sense of shame caused by sin to the Lord Jesus. He was naked and mocked on the cross. He took upon Himself our shame and curse caused by our sin. Jesus came to a woman at Sychar who came to draw water at noon to avoid the eyes of people out of shame. He knew her sinful past but didn’t condemn her. He became the living water, which never makes one thirsty forever, to her. She came to believe in Jesus as the Messiah. Shaking off her sense of shame, she came to her villagers in Samaria, who used to condemn her, and proclaimed Jesus as the Messiah. What a transformation Jesus wrought within her! One day, a woman branded “an unclean woman” and “a cursed woman” came to Jesus. Stretching her hand of faith, she touched the garment of Jesus. The root of her hemorrhage was dried up and miraculously healed. Her impurity didn’t defile Jesus. Rather, the power of Jesus’ holiness purified her. Indeed, Jesus is the authority over life and death. We must bring our sin-caused shame and condemnation to Jesus. Jesus has cleared off all of them through His death on the cross. Jesus is holiness, purity, and healing to us. Now, we have been set free from the bondage of uncleanness, condemnation, and shame. This is the Lord’s sheer grace.
