주님이 보이지 않는데 어떻게 살 것인가?(How are we going to live when the Lord is invisible?)

주님은 우리 육신의 눈에는 보이지 않습니다. 하지만 우리는 믿음으로 주님을 볼 수 있을 있습니다. 주님이 우리의 육신의 눈에 보이지 않는다고 주님의 존재를 의심할 필요는 없습니다. 공기가 눈에 보이지 않는다고 공기의 존재를 부인하는 사람은 없습니다. 우리가 살아 있다는 것은 공기가 존재한다는 것의 증거입니다. 마찬가지로 우리가 매일 존재하고 있다는 것은 예수님이 존재한다는 것을 증명합니다. 왜냐하면 그분은 우리를 지으신 분이며 우리에게 영생을 선물로 주셨기 때문입니다. 하지만 주님이 보이지 않아서 그분의 존재에 대한 의심에 빠지기도 합니다. 그렇기에 믿음의 눈으로 그분의 임재를 감각해야 합니다. 주님이 육신의 눈에 보이지 않는 것은 정상입니다. 하지만 믿음의 눈에는 주님이 보여야 합니다. 그런데 믿음의 눈이 병들면 주님을 잘 보지 못할 것입니다. 이런 연유에서 우리는 믿음을 건강하게 지킬 필요가 있습니다. 믿음은 보이는 세계와 보이지 않는 세계를 연결시켜 줍니다. 하늘과 땅을 연결시켜주는 것이 믿음입니다. 하나님은 성령을 통하여 믿음이란 선물을 우리에게 주십니다. 예수님을 보여주시고 믿도록 인도하시는 분은 성령님입니다. 성령님은 우리 안에 계십니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 지상 대명령을 주시면서 “볼찌어다 내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라”고 약속하였습니다(마28:20). 이것은 성령을 통하여 함께 하신다는 약속입니다. 예수님의 특별한 영적 임재를 말씀하신 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 홀로 있는 것이 아닙니다. 우리는 성령을 통하여 예수님과 함께 있습니다. 믿음은 이것을 진리로 붙듭니다. 예수님이 보이지 않는데 어떻게 살 것인가라는 질문의 답은 성령을 통하여 성경의 진리를 믿고 살아간다는 것입니다. 이것이 예수님을 믿고 의지하며 사는 것입니다. 하나님의 말씀을 대할 때 예수님과 인격적인 관계 안에서 대합니다. 예수님의 약속, 역사, 은혜, 사랑, 치유, 축복, 구원, 복음은 단순한 글자가 아니라 살아 계신 예수님의 마음을 대변합니다. 우리가 성령의 조명하심으로 성경을 읽으며 이러한 예수님을 보고 들으며 경험하고 배우는 것입니다. 이것이 믿음으로 살아가는 제자의 삶입니다. 우리는 우리에게 주신 믿음을 사용해야 합니다. 우리 믿음은 이름 뿐인 믿음이 아니라 실천적인 믿음이어야 합니다. 믿음은 사용하면 할수록 건강해 집니다. 예수님이 보이지 않아도 예수님이 함께 하심을 알기에 그분과 함께 사는 것이 믿음 생활입니다. 성 어거스틴은 이렇게 말합니다: “믿음은 우리가 보지 못하는 것을 믿는 것이며 믿음의 보상은 우리가 믿는 것을 보는 것입니다.” 

The Lord is invisible to our naked eyes. But we can see him by faith. We don’t need to doubt the existence of the Lord even though the Lord is invisible to our naked eyes. No one doubts the existence of air even though air is invisible. That we exist is the evidence that air exists. Likewise, our daily existence is the evidence of the existence of Jesus because Jesus is the One who made us and gave us the gift of eternal life. However, we may fall into doubt about His existence because the Lord is invisible. So, we must sense His presence by the eye of faith. It is normal that the Lord is invisible to our naked eyes. But the Lord should be inviable to the eye of faith. If the eye of faith gets will, then it can’t see the Lord clearly. For this reason, we must keep our faith healthy. Faith connects the visible world with the invisible world. It connects heaven with earth. God gives us the gift of faith through the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who shows us Jesus and leads us to believe in Him. The Holy Spirit indwells us. When He gave the disciples the Great Commission, Jesus promised them as follows: Behold, I will always be with you to the end of the age” (Matt. 28:20). This is the promise that He will be with us through the Holy Spirit. He talks about His special, spiritual presence with us. So, we are not left alone. We are with Jesus through the Holy Spirit. Faith takes hold of it as truth. The answer to the question “How are we going to live when Jesus is invisible?” is living by trusting the truth of Scripture through the Holy Spirit. This is what it means to live by believing and trusting Jesus. When we treat the word of God, we treat it in our personal relationship with Jesus. Jesus’ promises, works, grace, love, healing, blessings, salvation, or gospel consist merely of letters but represent the heart of the living Jesus. When we read the Bible through the illumination of the Holy Spirit, we are seeing, hearing, experiencing, and learning from Him. This is the way the disciples of Jesus live by faith. We must exercise God-given faith. Our faith shouldn’t be nominal, but practical. The more we use it, the healthier our faith becomes. Our faith life is living together with Jesus by knowing Jesus is with us even when Jesus is invisible. St. Augustine said, “Faith is to believe what we do not see, and the reward of faith is to see what we believe.”
