새해 (New Year)

새해 맞이를 준비하며 습관적으로 행했던 의식 같은 것을 기억합니다. 저의 아버지는 마을에 있는 공중 목욕탕에 저를 데리고 갔습니다. 겨울철에는 몸에 두꺼운 때가 많이 있었습니다. 그래서 아버지와 저는 뜨거운 탕에서 30분 정도 때를 불리곤 했습니다. 그런 후에 아버지는 저의 등에 있는 때를 밀어주었고 저는 아버지의 등을 밀어주었습니다. 우리는 몸의 때를 깨끗하게 밀어냈습니다. 그런 후에는 몸 전체를 여러 번 물로 씻었습니다. 목욕탕에서 나올 때는 새 사람이 된 기분이었습니다. 몸이 새로운 향기에 기분이 좋았습니다. 마치 하늘을 높이 나는 것처럼 신이 났습니다. 집으로 돌아오는 길에 마을 사람들과 새해 인사를 나누었습니다. 어떤 분들은 “너의 깨끗하게 행복해 보인다”고 말해 주었습니다. 저는 어렸지만 새해에는 좋은 일이 저에게 있을 것 같이 느꼈습니다. 매년 새해 준비로 하는 목욕식은 새해를 맞이하도록 저의 마음을 준비시켜 주었고 새해에 대한 새로운 기대와 소망을 주었습니다. 솔직히 말씀드리면 저는 공중 목욕탕에 가는 것을 좋아하지 않았습니다. 때를 미는 것이 아팠기 때문에 싫었습니다. 하지만 일단 때를 몸에서 벗겨 내기 시작하면 새해에 앞서 몸을 깨끗하게 해야지 라는 일종의 사명감을 느꼈습니다. 그 시절 이후로 40년 이상이 흘렀습니다. 지금까지 매년 한번 씩 새해를 맞이했습니다. 많은 것이 변했습니다. 제 나이에 세월을 더했습니다. 안타깝게도 이제는 새해가 너무 익숙한 나머지 별로 신명이 나지 않습니다. 어린 시절 천진난만한 기대감에서 오는 행복감이 그리울 뿐입니다. 어떻게 하면 어린 시절처럼 새해를 즐거워할 수 있을까요? 뜨거운 물로 목욕을 하면 새해에 대하여 신명 남을 느낄 수 있을까요? 모르기는 몰라도 어린시절 느꼈던 흥분감을 느낄 수 없을 것입니다. 또한 올해를 통하여 어린시절의 행복함을 경험할 수 없을 것 같습니다. 그래서 저의 속사람 전체에 영향을 줄 본질적인 무엇인가를 해야 할 필요를 느낍니다. 제가 찾은 답은 예수 그리스도의 복음입니다. 저는 예수 그리스도의 보혈을 통하여 저의 모든 죄에서 깨끗함을 받았습니다. 지난 해 저의 실패, 실수, 후회, 죄의 무거운 짐을 새해로 끌고 들어가고 싶지 않습니다. 이런 짐을 마음에 품고는 주님께 새해를 선물로 받으면서 즐거워할 수가 없습니다. 제가 오래 전에 뜨거운 물에 목욕을 했던 것같이 제 마음과 생각을 예수님의 정결케 하는 피에 목욕을 하고 싶습니다. 그리하여 그리스도 안에서 새해를 하나님의 영광을 위하여 새롭게 시작하고 싶습니다. 그리스도의 피는 우리의 생각과 마음을 새롭게 하기에 충분히 능합니다. 그리스도의 능하신 피에 여러분 자신을 적시며 새해를 시작하시길 기원합니다. 

I have a fond memory of one preparatory ritual for the new year. My father took me to the public bath in my village. During the winter season, I had a thick layer of dead skin. So, my father and I would soak our bodies in hot water for about 30 minutes. Then, he would scrub my back and I would scrub his back. We would scrub our bodies thoroughly. Afterward, we would rinse our whole bodies several times. When I got out of the public bathhouse, I would feel as if I were a new person. I was pleased with the fresh scent of my body. I felt great as if I could have soared high in the sky. On the way back home, we shared New Year greetings with our villagers. Some commented, “You look clean and happy!” Though I was young, I felt something new would take place in the new year. The yearly ritual of taking a bath prepared my heart for the new year and granted me fresh anticipation and hope for the new year. Honestly speaking, I didn’t like going to the public bathhouse. I hated painful scrubbing. But once I began to remove dead skin from my body, I felt a sense of mission to cleanse myself before the new year. More than four decades have elapsed since then. Thus far, I have welcomed a new year celebration once every year. Things have changed a lot. I have added years to my age. Now, I don’t get thrilled or excited due to my familiarity with the new year. I greatly miss the happy mood of childlike excitement and anticipation during my childhood. How can I enjoy the new year as in my childhood? Will I feel great for New Year’s Day if I take a hot bath? Most likely, I won’t be able to have the same excitement I used to have during my childhood. Also, I won’t likely be able to experience the same happy mood throughout the year. So, I need to do something essential that affects the entirety of my inner man. I find one answer in the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have been cleansed from all my sins by the precious blood of Jesus Christ. I don’t want to drag the heavy load of all my failures, mistakes, regrets, and sins of the past year into the new year. With all this baggage in my heart, I can’t be thrilled in receiving the gift of the new year from the Lord. As I used to bathe myself in hot water years ago, so I would like to bathe my heart and mind in Jesus’ cleansing blood so that I would start this year afresh in Christ for God’s glory. Christ’s blood is powerful enough to renew our minds and hearts. May all of you start this year by soaking yourselves in the powerful blood of Christ!
