2022년 추수감사절(Thanksgiving in 2022)

이번 추수감사절에는 이곳에 남아 있는 대학생들을 집에 초대하였습니다. 아내는 수요일에 음식 준비를 위하여 그로서리 쇼핑을 나갔습니다. 집에 돌아온 후에는 추수감사절 음식 준비를 시작하였습니다. 저는 저녁 10시 반까지 준비를 도왔습니다. 아내는 새벽 2시까지 준비를 하다가 잠자리에 들었습니다. 아침에는 집안 청소와 음식 준비로 분주하였습니다. 학생들은 1시 전에 음식 준비를 마치지 못하여서 학생들이 도착하였습니다. 그래서 같이 음식을 만들고 1시 30분이 넘어서 추수감사절 만찬을 먹기 시작했습니다. 풍성한 식탁과 훈훈한 교제가 이어졌습니다. 우리 학생들과 가족처럼 식사하며 이야기를 나누었습니다. 학교 생활을 어떻게 하고 있는지 한 사람 씩 이야기를 들어보았습니다. 학생들의 사정을 좀더 이해할 수 있는 시간이었습니다. 그리고 4시 반이 넘어서 우리는 옆집에서 초대를 받아서 그곳에 갔습니다. 학생들은 우리 집에서 놀라고 하고 그곳으로 갔습니다. 그곳에는 우리 말고도 여러분이 이미 와서 교제하고 있었습니다. 큰 식탁에 둘러 앉아 식사를 시작하였습니다. 그리고 돌아가면서 감사한 일들을 네가지 씩 나누었습니다. 나는 좋은 이웃을 주신 것과, 가족, 아내, 아들, 건강 회복, 자유를 주신 하나님께 감사한다고 말하였습니다. 처음 만난 70대 중반의 남자 분은 오늘을 살아 있는 것에 감사하며 추수감사절 만찬 자리를 허락해 주신 주님께 감사한다고 이야기 했습니다. 우리 아내는 옆집 안주인이 빅토리아가 한달에 한 번씩 교회에 출석하게 된 것을 인하여 감사한다고 말하였습니다. 요엘이는 학교에서 공부할 수 있는 것, 가족에 대하여 감사한다고 나누었습니다. 여러분이 건강에 대하여 감사한다고 말했으며 전기가 있어서 따뜻하게 겨울을 보낼 수 있어서 감사한다고 했습니다. 훈훈한 추수감사절 만찬 자리였습니다. 후에 집으로 돌아왔고 학생들을 기숙사로 데려다 주었습니다. 집에 돌아오는 거의 10시가 되었습니다. 긴 하루였고 몸은 피곤했지만 마음은 기뻤습니다. 금요일에는 여러 학생들이 교회에 와서 교회 김치 만드는 것을 도와주었습니다. 여선교회 분들도 함께 수고하였습니다. 토요일에도 학생들과 여선교회가 함께 김치 만드는 것을 마쳤습니다. 교회 주변 정리를 하시는 분들도 있었습니다. 쉬는 날이지만 교회를 위하여 수고하신 모든 분들에게 감사의 말을 전하고 싶었습니다. 이렇게 한 주간이 쏜살처럼 날아가 버렸습니다. 돌아보면 특별한 일을 없었습니다. 그런데 곰곰이 생각해 보면 모든 것이 특별하고 의미가 있었습니다. 모두가 하나님의 은혜였습니다. 받을 만한 자격이 없는데도 하나님이 사랑으로 베풀어 주신 은혜였습니다. 모든 것이 하나님의 은혜라 생각하니 모든 것이 더욱 감사했습니다. 그래서 추수감사절 주간이 감사로 하나님을 영화롭게 한 시간이었습니다. 이 또한 하나님께 감사한 일었습니다. 시편 기자는 말합니다: “감사로 제사를 드리는 자가 나를 영화롭게 하나니 그 행위를 옳게 하는 자에게 내가 하나님의 구원을 보이리라”(시50:23).  

On this Thanksgiving Day, we invited some of our Bob Jones students to our place. My wife went grocery shopping for this occasion on Wednesday. After she came back home, she began to prepare for Thanksgiving dinner. I helped her preparation until 10:30 at night. She went to bed at 2:00 A.M. while preparing for Thanksgiving. In the morning, we were busy cleaning the house and preparing for Thanksgiving dinner. Our students arrived little earlier than 1:00 P.M. before we were done with food preparation. So, they helped us food preparation. Then, little after 1:30, we were able to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner. We had great Thanksgiving food and heart-warming fellowship around the table. We talked with one another around the table like a family. I heard how each of them was doing at school. It was a time to understand them little more. Then, little after 4:30, we went to our neighbor’s house because we were invited to their Thanksgiving party. We let our students stay in our place. Several were already in our neighbor’s home, enjoying fellowship with one another. We sat around a huge table and began to eat Thanksgiving meal. Then, we were sharing with one another four things we were grateful for. I gave thanks to God for good neighbors, family, wife, son, health recovery, and freedom. A gentleman in his mid-seventies, whom I met for the first time, gave thanks to God for the fact that he was still alive and able to enjoy Thanksgiving party. My wife thanked God that our neighbor hostess would go to Unity church once a month. My son Joel was grateful for his chance to study, and his family. Several of them were thankful to their health, and electricity whereby they could stay warm during the winter. It was a heart-warming Thanksgiving party. Afterwards, we came back home and took the students back to their dormitories. When I came back home, it was close to 10:00 P.M. It was a long day. I felt physically tired, but joyful in my heart. On Friday, some of our students came to church and helped make Kimchi in the church. Our ladies worked hard for Kimchi making. On Saturday, our students and ladies completed Kimchi making together. Also, there were those who did tree-trimming and cleaned around the church. It was a holiday. But they went for such trouble for the church. I would like to say a word of appreciation to each of them. The entire week flew away quickly. Looking back, I didn’t have anything special. But mulling over again, I found everything special and meaningful. It was all God’s grace. I didn’t deserve anything. But God granted me special grace by love. As I thought of everything as God’s grace, I felt more grateful. I felt like glorifying God through gratitude during Thanksgiving. Even for this, I gave thanks to God. The psalmist says, “The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God!” (Ps. 50:23).
