마지막 달(The final month)

1월이 어제 같은데 벌써 12월입니다. 시간이 빠르게 지나갑니다. 시간과 관련하여 처음과 마지막을 중요하게 여깁니다. 시작이 반이다 라는 말은 시작의 중요성을 보여줍니다. 마지막까지 최선을 다하라는 말은 마무리의 중요성을 보여줍니다. 우리는 중요한 마지막 달을 살고 있습니다. 학생들은 12월에 한 학기를 마무리 합니다. 중요한 기말고사를 봅니다. 한 학기에 대한 최종 평가입니다. 아직 끝난 것이 아니기에 최선을 다할 필요가 있습니다. 12월은 한 한기를 완성하는 시간입니다. “마지막”이란 말은 “완성”의 의미를 내포합니다. 한 해를 시작하며 계획했던 것을 마무리하는 것입니다. 물론 이루지 못한 계획이 있을 것입니다. 하지만 괜찮습니다. 새해에 재도전하면 되기 때문입니다. 12월 자기 성찰의 시간이어야 합니다. 지나온 시간을 되돌아보며 무엇이 잘못되거나 부족했는가를 찾아 볼 수 있는 시간입니다. 회개와 회복의 시간을 가진 후에 소망으로 새해를 준비해야 합니다. 성탄절과 함께 곧 이어 새해를 맞이하게 됩니다. 한 해를 마무리한다는 것은 정말 하나님의 은혜입니다. 그리고 우리는 새로운 한 해를 선물로 받을 것입니다. 우리가 새해를 얻기 위해 한 것은 없습니다. 우리는 단지 하나님의 주신 생명을 살 뿐입니다. 우리가 살아 있다는 것은 하나님의 섭리이며 은혜입니다. 이제 우리는 올해를 마무리하고 다른 해로 넘어가는 과도기에 있습니다. 올해의 마지막을 어떻게 보내는가에 따라 새로운 해를 맞이하는 마음의 상태가 다를 것입니다. 연말의 축제 분위기에 휩싸여 들뜬 마음으로 보내면 새해를 피곤함으로 맞이할 것입니다. 하지만 끝까지 최선을 다하면 새해를 벅찬 감사의 마음으로 맞이할 것입니다. 앞선 언급한대로 마지막은 완성의 시간입니다. 무엇을 완성해야 하는지를 생각해 보아야 할 것입니다. 일, 학업, 사역, 계획 등을 돌아보며 유종의 미를 거두기 위해 마음을 새롭게 할 필요가 있습니다. 바울은 자신의 삶과 복음 사역을 마무리해 가며 다음과 같은 말하였습니다: “내가 선한 싸움을 싸우고 나의 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지켰으니 이제 후로는 나를 위하여 의의 면류관이 예비되었으므로 주 곧 의로우신 재판장이 그 날에 내게 주실 것이니 내게만 아니라 주의 나타나심을 사모하는 모든 자에게니라”(딤후4:7-8). 그는 주님이 주신 삶과 사역에 충성하였습니다. 믿음으로 그 사역을 감당하였습니다. 그렇게 할 수 있었던 던 이유는 그가 주님의 상주심을 소망하며 확신하였기 때문입니다. 우리도 동일하신 주님을 믿음으로 바라보고 소망하며 12월을 잘 달려가야 할 것입니다. 임산부가 막달에 있을 때는 매우 힘듭니다. 하지만 아이의 출생을 기대하며 참습니다. 우리도 끝까지 참으며12월을 잘 마쳐야 합니다. 이것이 새해를 잘 준비하는 길입니다. 

January was like yesterday, but now it is already December. Time flies. With regard to time, beginning and ending are counted important. There is a saying “Well begun is half done,” which shows the importance of beginning. There is a saying “Do your best until the end,” which shows the importance of finishing. We are living in the important, final month. Students complete a semester in December. They will take final exams. They will have the final assessment of their semester. Because they haven’t completed their semester, they will have to do their best. December is a time to complete a semester. The word “final” implies “completing.” We are completing our plans which we made at the beginning of the year. Of course, we will have unfulfilled plans. But we are fine because we will have a new year in which we can reattempt to fulfill them. We are to make December a time of self-reflection. Looking back on the bygone days of the year, we can find what went wrong or lacking. After having a time of repentance and restoration, we are to prepare for a new year in hope. We will have Christmas and enter soon the New Year. Indeed, completing a year is a work of God’s grace. And we will receive a new year as a gift of God. We have done nothing to earn a new year. We simply live a God-given life. We are still living by God’s providence and grace. Now, we are in a transition of ending this year and entering another year. Depending on how we finish the final days of this year, we will be in a different mood for welcoming another new year. If we are overwhelmed with the festivity of the end of the year, we will enter the new year with a sense of exhaustion. However, if we do our best until the end, we will welcome the new year with a gratitude-filled heart. As I mentioned above, the end is a time of completion. We have to think about what to complete. As we look back on our jobs, schoolwork, ministries, or plans, we must refresh our minds to have a good finish. As he was about to finish his life and gospel ministry, Paul said as follows: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing” (2 Tim. 4:7-8). He was faithful to the Lord-given life and ministry. He fulfilled his ministry by faith. He was able to do so because he had a confident hope in the Lord’s rewards. We must behold and hope in the same Lord by faith as we run the finish line of this December. A pregnant woman spends her last month with much hardship. But expecting the birth of her baby, she endures. We must endure and finish our December well. This is the way we prepare for the new year well.
