삶을 위한 죽음(Death for Life)

삶과 죽음은 상반된 것입니다. 서로 양끝에 위치하며 절대로 만날 것 같지 않습니다. 하지만 삶과 죽음은 매우 가깝습니다. 어떤 면에서 삶과 죽음은 공존하며 서로를 필요로 합니다. 사람들은 먼저 살고 그후 죽으면 삶은 없어진다고 생각합니다. 그러나 죽은 후에도 삶은 이어질 수 있습니다. 자연은 이것을 증명해 줍니다. 요즘 가을철이라 낙엽이 많이 떨어졌습니다. 올해는 단풍이 아름답게 들었습니다. 노란색, 빨간색, 녹색 잎들이 파란 하늘색과 햇빛에 놀라운 장관을 연출합니다. 지난 주에 독감으로 고생하며 많은 시간을 침대에 누워있었습니다. 날씨도 흐리고 비가 내렸습니다. 창밖을 내다보았습니다. 노란색 단풍을 보면서 그 아름다움에 취해 있었습니다. 그 때 비바람이 불며 나무 가지들을 흔들었습니다. 많은 잎들이 바람을 이기지 못하고 낙하하기 시작했습니다. 그리고 나무 주변에 떨어져 쌓였습니다. 이러한 과정이 반복되는 것을 지켜 보다가 곧 겨울이 오겠구나 라는 생각이 들었습니다. 나무들이 겨울을 날 준비를 하는구나. 추운 겨울을 나무 잎들로 주변을 덮고 내년에 생명의 잎들을 활짝 피기 위하여 준비한다는 생각이 스쳤습니다. 나무는 죽은 잎들을 버리는 것이 아니라 새로운 생명을 위하여 심고 있었던 것입니다. 나무는 겨울철 자기의 일부를 죽이므로 봄철에 다시 살아야 할 때를 대비하는 것입니다. 주님도 자신의 생명을 버리시므로 다시 사셨습니다. 그분의 죽으심은 우리에게 생명이 되었습니다. 우리는 종종 죽음과 같은 아픔을 경험합니다. 저는 감기를 앓으며 죽기처럼 싫게 느껴졌습니다. 그런데 왜 우리에게는 이러한 시간들이 필요할까요? 이 땅을 떠날 때는 왜 죽음의 관문을 통과해야 할까요? 낙엽의 죽음은 허무한 죽음이 아니라 다음 생명을 위한 준비였습니다. 이러한 은유에서 우리는 우리의 죽음이 천국에서의 생명을 위한 것임을 발견합니다. 이 땅에서의 고난도 우리 자아에 죽음과 같이 아픈 것일 수 있습니다. 하지만 영적인 의미에서 고난의 아픔을 통하여 우리가 죄에 대하여 죽고 하나님께 대하여 더욱 살아난다면 죽음은 삶은 위한 것일 수 있습니다. 더 나은 것을 위하여 죽는 것이 죽음의 노예가 되지 않는 길입니다. 더 나은 것은 더 풍성한 생명입니다. 하나님과 함께 하는 생명입니다. 천국에서의 생명입니다. 우리 안에는 우리가 너무 많습니다. 우리가 더 많아야 잘 사는 것이라 생각합니다. 하지만 우리는 죽고 예수님으로 사는 것이 참된 생명을 사는 것입니다. 자기를 버리는 것이 자기를 진실로 사랑하고 살리는 길입니다. 이것이 바로 예수님이 가신 길이며 우리가 따라야 할 길입니다. 죽으면 살리라는 부활의 신비를 알기를 기원합니다. 

Life and death are contrary to each other. They never seem to meet each other, standing at the opposite ends. However, life and death are very close to each other. In some respect, they co-exist and need each other. People assume that they live first, then die, and they turn non-existent. But after death, life may go on. Nature proves it. These autumnal days, we happily watch leaves falling from the trees. This year, fall foliage is so beautiful. Yellow, red, and green leaves orchestrate a wonderful scenery along with bright sunbeams and the blue sky. Last week, I spent much time lying in bed because of my severe cold. The weathers were downcast and rainy. I looked outside through the windows. While looking at yellowish fall foliage, I was intoxicated with its beauty. At the moment, the windy rain shook the branches. A lot of leaves began to fall down without resisting the brunt of the blow. Then, they piled up around the trees. While watching it repeatedly, I felt the winter coming soon. The trees are preparing for the winter. It has occurred that the trees have covered their grounds with their own leaves so that they would give forth new leaves of life next year. The trees were not abandoning their dead leaves. They were sowing them for a new life. They are preparing for a new bloom next spring by killing a part of themselves during the winter. The Lord gave His life on the cross and rose again. His death has become a life to us. We often suffer pain like death. While suffering a cold, I felt like hating it like death. By the way, why do we need such a time? Why should we go through the gate of death when we die? The death of a fallen leaf is not a futile death, but a preparation for a next life. In such a metaphor, we find that our death is preparatory to a life in heaven. Suffering in this world may be painful like death to the self. But in a spiritual sense, death may be for life if we are dead to sin through suffering and much alive to God. Dying for something better is a way to not be enslaved by death. Something better refers to a more abundant life. It is a life with God. It is a life in heaven. We have too much of self within ourselves. We assume we will live better if you have more of self within ourselves. But we die to ourselves and live in union with Jesus, which is to live a true life. Abandoning oneself is a way to love oneself and make oneself truly live. This is the way Jesus has gone, which we are to follow. It is my prayer that all of us may come to appreciate the mystery of resurrection, that is, “we will live if we die.”
