두려움을 기도로(Turning fear into prayer)

두려움은 위협적인 것에 대한 자연스러운 감정적 반응입니다. 그런데 위협적이지 않은데도 스스로 그렇게 단정하고 공포에 사로잡히는 것은 정신적 질환입니다. 믿는 자들도 이러한 공황 장애에서 자유롭지 못합니다. 여기서 전능하신 하나님의 보호하심을 믿는데 왜 두려워할까 라는 의문이 들 수 있습니다. 답은 우리가 불완전하기 때문입니다. 우리의 믿음도 불완전합니다. 우리의 감정도 불완전합니다. 우리의 환경도 불완전합니다. 실은 불완전하고 불확실하며 위험한 세상에서 살면서 두려움과 염려를 느끼는 것은 자연스러운 것입니다. 좋은 싫든 그것이 우리의 현실입니다. 어쩌면 이러한 현실에서 두려움을 조절하면서 사는 것이 지혜일 것입니다. 갈렙과 여호수아같이 가나안의 적들을 그들의 밥으로 여기는 믿음의 사람들도 있습니다. 하지만 우리는 대부분 야곱같이 형 에서에 대한 두려움을 가지고 살아갑니다. 야곱은 하나님의 말씀을 따라 고향으로 돌아갑니다. 외삼촌 라반에게 모든 것을 빼앗길 수 있었지만 하나님의 개입하심으로 평화 조약을 맺고 돌아옵니다. 도중에 하나님의 천사들, 곧 하나님의 군대를 목격합니다. 그럼에도 야곱은 여전히 형 에서를 두려워합니다. 형이 400명을 이끌고 그를 만나러 온다는 소식을 듣고 두려워 떱니다. 형이 그를 해하러 오는 것인지 환영하러 오는 것인지 알 수가 없습니다. 그런데도 야곱은 그가 자기를 죽이러 온다고 단정하고 공포에 떱니다. 형의 마음의 환심을 사려고 여러 방법을 강구합니다. 죽음의 공포를 느끼는 자에게 당연한 것입니다. 그리고 그는 하나님께 부르짖기 시작합니다. 하나님이 그에게 하신 보호와 번창의 약속을 붙들고 살려 달라고 하나님을 설득합니다. 예수님의 제자들도 많은 기적의 역사를 목격하고도 풍랑 앞에서 죽음의 공포에 질려 예수님께 살려 달라고 간구합니다. 너무도 당연하고 기도입니다. 우리는 여기서 이들의 믿음이 왜 이 모양이야 라고 비난할 수 없습니다. 왜냐하면 우리도 그들과 같기 때문입니다. 우리는 이들의 연약한 모습에서 많은 위로를 받습니다. 우리의 연약함을 인정하면서 주님의 완전함을 감사함으로 의지하게 됩니다. 믿음은 우리의 경건, 기도, 거룩을 의지하는 것이 아니라 예수님의 전능하시며 선하시고 신실하신 사랑을 의지하는 것입니다. 우리에게는 두렵게 하는 삶의 사건과 환경을 이따금씩 만납니다. 단순하게 하나님의 보호하시는 섭리를 믿고 우리를 그분께 의탁하는 믿음이 필요합니다. 이러한 믿음은 주님의 약속을 붙들고 우리의 두려워하는 것을 주님께 맡기는 것입니다. 이러한 믿음은 기도로 나타납니다. 이것이 두려움을 통제하는 지혜입니다. 

Fear is a natural response of emotion to something threatening. But panic attack, which is a mental disorder, may develop when one considers something non-threatening as a real threat and gets terrified. Even believers are not immune from such a panic disorder. Here we may raise a question why we get terrified even when we believe the mighty God protects us. The answer is we are imperfect. Our faith is imperfect. Our emotions are imperfect. Our circumstances are imperfect. In fact, it is quite natural for us to feel afraid and anxious while living in this imperfect, uncertain, and dangerous world. Like it or not, it is our reality. Perhaps, it is wise for us to live in such a reality by controlling fear. There are some like Caleb and Joshua who regarded their enemies in the land of Canaan as their food by faith. But most of us are like Jacob who lived with fear of Esau. As told by God, Jacob returns to his homeland. Though he could have lost everything to Laban, he still returns after having made a covenant of peace with Laban by divine intervention. On the way back, he witnesses the angels of God, that is, the army of God. In spite of all this, Jacob is still afraid of Esau. He is frightened when he hears Esau coming to meet him with his 400 men. It is hard to tell whether Esau is coming to attack him or welcome him. However, Jacob concludes that his brother is coming to kill him and shudders with fear. He tries to win Esau’s favor in his own ways. No wonder Jacob, who is controlled by fear of death, does such a thing. And he begins to cry out to God. Holding unto the promises of God about protection and prosperity, Jacob tries to persuade God into keeping him alive. The disciples of Jesus, even after they have witnessed so many miracles, are frightened with fear of death during the storm, cry out to Jesus for life. Such is quite an expected prayer. Here, we can’t blame them for lack of faith, for we are the same with them. We find much comfort in their frailty. Acknowledging our weakness, we rely on the Lord’s perfection with gratitude. Faith is a reliance not on our piety, prayer, and holiness, but on Jesus’ almighty, good, and faithful love. Sometimes, we encounter terrifying events and circumstances in life. We need simple faith whereby we hold unto the providence of God’s protection and commit ourselves to Him. Such faith is to cling to the Lord’s promises and commit our dreadful things to Him. It is manifested by faith. It is a piece of wisdom that controls fear.
