무리인가 제자인가? (Crowds or Disciples?)

예수님을 따르는 큰 무리가 있었습니다. 그리고 예수님을 따르는 소수의 제자들이 있었습니다. 무리는 여러 부류의 사람들이 섞여 있습니다. 이들은 예수님에 대한 소문을 듣고 그분께 나온 자들입니다. 이들은 그분을 둘러 싸고 있었습니다. 이들의 공통점은 예수님에 대한 일종의 관심이었습니다. 이들은 서로를 알지 못한 채 모였다 흩어지는 사람들입니다. 이들은 군중 심리에 이끌려 예수님을 따르려 했습니다. 예수님에 대한 막연한 기대를 가지고 있었습니다. 예수님과 일대일 만남이 없었습니다. 예수님과 일대일 관계가 없었습니다. 예수님의 가르침을 들었고 그분의 기적을 목격지지만 그분이 어떤 분이지를 이해하지 못하였습니다. 이들의 최대 관심사는 삶의 문제 해결이었습니다. 예수님을 따르는 것에 대한 대가가 어떤 것인지 생각하지 않았습니다. 예수님의 기적들에 열광하였고 그분을 따르는 것에 행운이 따를 것이라고 기대할 뿐이었습니다. 이러한 이들의 기대는 참 믿음이 아닙니다. 예수님을 따르는 것은 고난을 수반합니다. 그것은 예수님의 십자가 고난의 길을 따르는 것입니다. 그분을 따르면서 이단이라 정죄를 당할 수 있으며, 온갖 핍박에 눌릴 수 있고, 가족들에게 버림을 받을 수도 있으며, 사회에서 왕따를 당할 수 있습니다. 주님이 가자고 하신 길에 삶을 위협하는 풍랑이 있을 수도 있습니다. 이와 같이 무리는 자기에게 고통과 손해가 되면 예수님 따르는 것을 헌신짝처럼 버릴 수도 있습니다. 반면에 참된 제자는 목숨을 걸고 예수님을 따르는 소수의 사람들입니다. 이들은 무리들과 같이 쉽게 예수님을 버리고 떠나가지 않습니다. 어떠한 일을 당해도 예수님 따르기를 포기하지 않으려 노력합니다. 예수님이 이끄시는 길이 험난하다고 불평하며 떠나가지는 않습니다. 그분의 인도하심을 믿고 자신을 그분께 맡기려 합니다. 설령 예수님을 따르다가 죽는다 해도 그분을 따르겠다고 다짐합니다. 왜냐하면 예수님이 그들에게 영원한 생명이 됨을 믿기 때문입니다. 가족이 반대해도 예수님을 따릅니다. 실직을 당해도 예수님을 따릅니다. 죽음의 위협을 받아도 예수님을 부인하지 않습니다. 하지만 우리의 노력만으로는 예수님을 이렇게까지 따를 수는 없을 것입니다. 예수님의 열 두 사도들은 죽기까지 그분을 부인하지 않고 따르겠다고 약속했습니다. 그러나 아무도 그 약속을 지키지 못했습니다. 가룟 유다는 돈에 눈이 멀어 예수님을 대제사장들에게 팔아 넘겼습니다. 수제자 베드로도 예수님을 세번이나 부인하였습니다. 그럼에도 예수님은 그러한 베드로의 믿음이 떨어지지 않기를 기도해 주었습니다. 그리고 부활하신 후에 그를 찾아오셔서 사명자로 회복시켜 주셨습니다. 우리의 힘, 지혜, 노력만으로는 예수님을 온전히 따를 수 없습니다. 예수님의 능하신 은혜를 의지하고 그분의 인도하심을 겸손히 따르는 것이 예수님을 끝까지 따르는 길입니다. 예수님의 제자들은 예수님을 떠나서는 아무 것도 할 수 없다는 것을 고백하며 그분을 의지하는 자들입니다. 

A large crowd followed Jesus. And a few disciples followed Jesus. The crowd consisted of a variety of groups. They came to Him after they had heard about the rumors of Jesus. They hung around Jesus. They shared their common interest in Jesus together. Without knowing one another, they gathered together and scattered together. They attempted to follow Jesus out of mob psychology. They had a vague expectation about Jesus. They didn’t have a one-on-one meeting with Jesus. They didn’t have a one-to-one relationship with Him. Even though they heard of His teachings and witnessed His miracles, they had no clear understanding of Jesus’ identity. Their greatest concern was to find answer to their problems of life. They didn’t think about what would cost them for following Jesus. They were thrilled about His miracles. They simply anticipated something good would happen to them for following Jesus. Such their expectation was not true faith. Following Jesus involves suffering. It refers to following the painful way of the cross of Jesus. While following Jesus, we may be condemned as heretics, pressed down under all kinds of persecution, abandoned by our families, or bullied by our society. There may be a life-threatening storm in the way the Lord invites us to go together. Likewise, when they suffer pains and losses, the crowd may abandon following Jesus as dilapidated shoes. On the contrary, true disciples are a few who risk their lives to follow Jesus. They are unlike the multitudes who easily abandon and leave Jesus. They endeavor not to give up following Jesus no matter what happens to them. They do not depart from Jesus while complaining about a tough way Jesus leads them. Trusting His guidance, they try to entrust themselves to Him. Even though they might die for following Jesus, they are determined to follow Him. It is because they believe Jesus is eternal life to them. They still follow Jesus in spite of familial oppositions. They still follow Jesus in spite of forfeiting their jobs. They do not deny Jesus even though are threatened to death. However, we may not be able to follow Jesus in this way only with our efforts. The twelve apostles of Jesus promised to follow Jesus unto death without denying Him. But none of them kept that promise. Blind to money, Judas Iscariot sold Jesus over to the high priests. The head disciple Peter denied Him three times. Nonetheless, Jesus had prayed for Peter’s faith not to fail. And after He rose from the dead, He first came to Peter to restore him to His calling. We can’t wholly follow Jesus only with our own strength, wisdom, and efforts. Relying on Jesus’ enabling grace and humbly following His guidance are a way to follow Him to the end. The disciples of Jesus are those who confess, “I can do nothing apart from Jesus” and rely on Him.
