여름을 시작하며(Entering the Summer)

본격적인 더위가 시작되었습니다. 연일 최고 기온이 90도을 상회하고 있습니다. 아침에는 상쾌한 서늘함이 있지만 저녁에는 그리 선선하지 않습니다. 여름이 시작되는 구나 했는데 이미 여름 한 가운데 있는듯 합니다. 아이들은 이미 여름 방학을 했습니다. 한 학년을 마쳤습니다. 정말 우리 아이들이 수고 많았습니다. 준호는 중학교를 졸업하고 이번 가을에는 고등학생이 됩니다. 우리 아이들 모두에게 “잘 했다” 라고 힘껏 박수를 보냅니다. 아이들은 앞으로 긴 여름 방학을 보내게 됩니다. 많이 쉬고 놀며 몸과 지혜와 믿음이 쑥 자랐으면 좋겠습니다. 집에서 시간을 많이 보내다 보면 엄마와 부딪히는 일이 있을 것입니다. 성장통이라 여기며 성숙했으면 좋겠습니다. 뜨거운 여름을 지나며 인생에서 만나게 될  불 같은 시련에 준비되었으면 좋겠습니다. 우리 교회도 긴 여름을 지나갑니다. 대학생들은 모두 한국으로 돌아갔습니다. 예배 출석 인원이 많이 줄었습니다. 주일 예배 때 빈자리의 허전함을 느낍니다. 여름은 휴가철이라 많은 분들이 여행을 떠납니다. 그런데 올 여름은 높은 인플레이션과 자동차 가스 비로 인해 안타깝게도 휴가를 포기하는 분들이 제법 있습니다. 저는 우리 모두가 길고 더운 여름에 영적 열병을 앓지 않기를 기도합니다. 무료하고 단조롭게 느껴지는 여름 일상을 주님과 동행하며 시원하게 보내길 기도합니다. 새로운 것을 도전해 보는 것도 좋을 것 같습니다. 매일 말씀 묵상과 기도로 주님과의 교통이 원활했으면 좋겠습니다. 요즘 어려운 경제적 상황으로 마음이 걱정으로 위축될 수 있습니다. 휴가 시즌이라 영적으로 해이해 질 수 있습니다. 이러한 때를 지나는 방법은 매일 하는 루틴을 성실하게 수행하는 것입니다. 제사장들은 매일 아침 저녁으로 하나님께 제사를 드렸습니다. 매일의 책임과 의무에서 신선함이나 새로움을 느끼지 못했을지도 모릅니다. 하지만 하나님의 명령을 따라 신실하게 그 일을 행했습니다. 제자장들은 평생을 그렇게 살았습니다. 이것이 그들의 사명이었습니다. 사명에 충실한 것이 경건이고 거룩입니다. 여름 일상을 말씀과 기도와 예배로 주님과 동행하는 것이 매일의 영적 루틴입니다. 이것을 신실하게 행하는 것이 바로 삶을 살아내는 거룩인 것입니다. 하나님은 우리의 일상에서 우리와 함께 살아 주십니다. 이것이 은혜입니다. 우리는 이러한 은혜를 의지하여 여름 동안 예수님의 산상 설교 가정 예배를 배울 것입니다. 예수님은 그의 설교를 통하여 하나님 나라 백성이 어떤 자들이며 어떠한 삶을 살아야 하는지를 가르쳐 주셨습니다. 우리의 일상에서 그분의 가르침을 실천할 수 있기를 기도합니다. 가정 예배를 통하여 예수님을 더욱 닮는 여름이 되길 기원합니다. 

A hot season has already begun. High temperatures go beyond 90 degrees every day. It is refreshing in the morning but is not so cool in the evening. Apparently, we are at the beginning of summer, but all of us feel now we are already in the middle of it. Children already started their summer vacation. They have completed a school-year. They have well finished their laborious school work. Joon-Ho graduated from middle school and will start high school this fall. I would like to send our big applause to all of our children for their hard work. They will spend a long summer break. I wish they would grow in stature and wisdom while resting and playing much. While spending much time at home, they may have trouble with their mothers. I wish they would consider it as growth pain and grow mature. I wish they would be prepared for fiery trials they might encounter in life while going through this hot summer. Our Grace Church is going through this long summer, too. Our college students have already gone home in Korea. Sunday church attendance hits rock bottom. We may feel empty of empty seats during Sunday worship. A lot of people take trips because summer is a vacation season. But there are a fair number of people who give up their vacations this summer due to high inflation and gas prices. I pray that none of us would suffer from spiritual heat stroke during this long and sizzling summer. I pray that all of us would tackle with coolness our tedious and monotonous summer routines. It will be good for us to try things new. It will be good for us to have a vibrant communion with the Lord through our daily QT and prayer. These days, we may feel like flinching from the current economic hardships. We may be spiritually slackened during this vacation season. The way that we go through a time like this is to carry out our routines faithfully. The priests offered daily sacrifices to God every morning and evening. They might not have felt something new and refreshing out of their responsibilities and obligations. But they carried them out faithfully according to God’s command. In so doing, the priests lived their entire lives. It was their calling. Faithfulness to one’s calling is godliness and holiness. Walking with the Lord through word, prayer, and worship is our daily spiritual routine. Doing it faithfully is holiness able to live one’s life. God lives together with us in our daily lives, which is His grace. Relying on such grace, we will learn Family Worship of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount during this summer. I pray that all of us practice His teaching in our daily lives. May all of us learn to be more like Jesus through family worship in our daily routines! May this summer be a time we learn to be more like Him through family worship!
