친교 식사를 재개하며(Resuming our fellowship meal)

초대 교회는 함께 모여 배우고 기도하며 예배하고 음식을 나누는 믿음 공동체였습니다. 그 당시는 많은 신자들이 가난해서 먹고 사는 것이 힘들었습니다. 그래서 초대 교회는 가난한 신자들과 음식을 나누었습니다. 가족이 한 식탁에서 먹듯이 초대 교회는 음식을 함께 먹었습니다. 이들이 함께 나눈 식사는 그리스도 안에서 나눈 친교를 뜻합니다. 한국 교회는 이러한 전통을 잘 이어 받았습니다. 대부분의 미국 교회들은 중요한 절기에 교인들이 함께 식사를 나눕니다. 하지만 대부분의 한국 교회는 매 주일 친교 음식을 나누는 전통은 지키고 있습니다. 식탁 교제는 한국 문화의 중요한 부분이기 때문입니다. 그런데 지난 2년 동안은 코로나 바이러스 팬데믹 때문에 이러한 교제가 중단되었습니다. 식사 교제 중에 감염이 발생하고 혹 그 중에 사망자가 나올 수 있다는 우려가 있었습니다. 이제는 전 세계가 코로나 바이러스 팬데믹에 어느 정도 적응해 가고 있습니다. 우리는 일상적인 교제의 단절이 얼마나 힘든 것인지를 경험하였습니다. 소통과 교제가 삶의 중요한 부분인 것을 깊이 느끼는 시간이었습니다. 그래서 우리 교회는 식사 교제를 다시 시작하였습니다. 처음에는 찬양팀이 친교를 시작하였습니다. 그러다가 대학부가 모두 친교를 나누었습니다. 얼마 후 부활절에는 온 교회가 친교를 참여하여 오랜만에 담소하며 좋은 시간을 보냈습니다. 이번 주일에는 학생들이 온 교회를 위하여 친교 식사를 준비합니다. 주님은 그의 공생애 사역 기간 동안 제자들과 함께 지내셨습니다. 이들에게 말씀을 가르치고 함께 예배하였습니다. 전도 여행을 하시며 늘 이들과 함께 식사를 나누었습니다. 제자들과의 식사 시간은 교제 시간이었습니다. 이러한 식사 친교를 통하여 사랑을 나누고 관계는 더욱 깊어 졌습니다. 먹고 살기 힘들 때 떡을 나누는 것은 분명 사랑입니다. 굶은 교우에게 한끼의 식사를 대접하는 것도 분명 사랑입니다. 한국 음식이 그리운 학생들에게 친교 식사를 준비하는 것도 분명 사랑입니다. 앞으로 우리는 이러한 사랑의 식탁 교제를 나눌 것입니다. 함께 시간을 보내는 것이 중요합니다. 안부를 교환하는 것도 필요합니다. 각자의 삶과 신앙도 나누는 것이 필요합니다. 그래서 고통과 기쁨을 나누는 믿음 공동체가 되는 것입니다. 이 모든 것이 친교 식사를 통하여 이루어질 수 있습니다. 식탁교제는 사랑의 떡을 나누는 귀한 시간입니다. 이를 위해 사랑의 수고를 하시는 모든 분들께 감사를 드립니다. 함께 참여하여 섬길 때 식탁 친교는 교회를 세우는 중요한 사역이 됩니다.

The early church was a community of faith that would gather together to learn, pray, worship, and share meals. During those days, many believers were so poor that they didn’t have enough food. So, the early church shared meals with poor believers. As the family sit around the same table to eat, so the early church ate together. Their meal sharing refers to having a fellowship in Christ. The Korean church has been keeping this kind of fellowship meal tradition. Most American churches hold potluck meal fellowships on special occasions. But most Korean churches still keep the tradition of fellowship meal every Lord’s Day. It is because table fellowship is an important part of Korean culture. But for the last two years, such a fellowship has stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic. There was a common fear that some might be infected with the virus during table fellowship and might die from it. Now, the whole world has been adjusting to the pandemic to some extent. We have experienced how hard the discontinuation of daily interaction could be. We have realized communication and fellowship are an important part of our lives. So, our church has resumed our table fellowship. Our Praise Team started its fellowship first. Afterwards, the whole college and career group held it together. Then, the whole church participated in our Easter meal fellowship, chatted together, and had a wonderful time together. This Lord’s Day, our students prepare our fellowship meal for the whole congregation. During His earthly ministry, the Lord lived together with His disciples. He taught them the word of God and worshiped together. As He travelled for evangelism, He always shared meals together with them. His mealtime with them was a time of fellowship. Through such a mealtime fellowship, He shared His love with them and their relationship went deeper. In such a time of scarcity, sharing food together is certainly an act of love. Treating a meal for a poor fellow believer is an act of love. Preparing a fellowship meal for the students missing Korean food is certainly an act of love. From now on, we will continue to hold such a table fellowship of love. It is important for us to spend time together. It is necessary for us to exchange greetings with one another. It is necessary for us to share our lives and faith together. In so doing, we grow up to be a faith community sharing pain and joy as well. We may accomplish all this through our fellowship meal. Table fellowship is a precious time of sharing the bread of love together. I really appreciate all those who labor for it out of love. As we participate and serve together, our table fellowship becomes a vital ministry of edifying the church.
