실제적인 믿음(Practical Faith)

믿음은 삶을 움직이는 힘입니다. 믿음이 건강하면 삶이 건강하고 믿음이 병들면 삶이 병듭니다. 많은 이들이 믿는다고 고백하지만 삶은 달라지지 않습니다. 거짓된 믿음은 삶에 아무런 영향을 주지 못합니다. 어떤 이들은 정서적 터치를 받을 때는 자신들이 믿는 다고 확신합니다. 하지만 그러한 느낌은 아침 안개처럼 사라질 수 있습니다. 참된 믿음은 이와 달리 힘이 있습니다. 완전하지는 못해도 살아 있기에 몸과 마음을 움직입니다. 믿음은 이론적이거나 관념적이어서는 안됩니다. 믿음은 실제적이고 실천적이어야 합니다. 믿음의 대상은 자기가 아니라 그리스도입니다. 오직 그리스도만을 의지합니다. 믿음이 그리스도 위에 굳게 설 때 속사람을 활동하게 합니다. 그래서 삶에 영향을 줄 수 밖에 없습니다. 만약 그렇지 못하면 거짓되고 죽은 믿음일지 모릅니다. 그래서 우리의 믿음이 실제적이고 실천적인지를 점검해 보아야 합니다. 또한 믿음이 그리스도께 뿌리를 두고 있는지를 점검해야 합니다. 안전 운행을 위하여 자동차를 정기적으로 점거하듯이 영적 건강을 위해서 믿음을 정기적으로 점검해 보아야 합니다. 실제적인 믿음은 실생활과 관련되어 있습니다. 관념적인 허구나 불가능을 추구하지 않습니다. 믿음은 현실에 두 다리를 딛고 서 있습니다. 현실을 무시하지 않습니다. 하지만 현실에 속박되지는 않습니다. 믿음의 무대는 천국이 아니라 실생활입니다. 매일 생활에서 하나님의 임재를 의식하며 의지합니다. 불가능한 현실에 굴복하지 않습니다. 하지만 하나님의 섭리를 믿고 그러한 현실을 긍정하며 받아드립니다. 말기 암에서 치유되는 것이 하나님의 유일한 뜻이라고 우기긴 보단 투병 중에 하나님의 임재와 섭리를 의지합니다. 이러한 믿음은 천국의 실재를 확실하게 소망하기에 죽음을 초월합니다. 물론 하나님의 뜻이면 말기 암에서 치유 받을 수 있습니다. 하지만 무조건 나아야 한다고 우기는 것은 실제적인 믿음이 아니라 빗나간 믿음입니다. 실제적, 실천적 믿음은 투병 과정을 견딜 수 있는 하나님의 은혜와 힘을 구합니다. 단순히 낫기를 위해서만 싸우는 것이 아니라 하나님의 뜻을 이루기 위해 싸움입니다. 하나님의 다스림 아래 살기를 위해 힘씁니다. 우리가 믿는다는 것은 죽든지 살든지 그리스도의 것임을 감사하며 사는 것입니다. 이것이 실생활에서 역사하는 실제적인 믿음입니다. 하나님은 이러한 믿음을 기뻐하십니다. 이러한 믿음은 하나님을 깊이 경험하며 하나님과 친밀함을 누립니다. 그리스도와 하나됨을 누리며 고통 중에도 기뻐할 수 있습니다. 이러한 믿음의 소유자는 세상이 감당치 못하는 승리자입니다(히11:38). 다음 말씀을 기억합시다: “믿음이 없이는 기쁘시게 못하나니 하나님께 나아가는 자는 반드시 그가 계신 것과 또한 그가 자기를 찾는 자들에게 상 주시는 이심을 믿어야 할지니라”(히11:6).

Faith is power to move life. Sound faith produces sound life and sickly faith produces sickly life. Many profess faith but their lives do not change. False faith makes no influence upon life. When they have an emotional touch, some are convinced that they believe. But such feeling may disappear like a morning fog. Different from it, true faith is active. Though it is not perfect, it operates both the body and the heart. Faith is not supposed to be theoretical or idealistic. It is to be actual and practical. The object of faith is not the self, but Christ. It depends on Christ alone. When it stands firm on Christ, it makes the inner man active. So, it cannot but make influence on life. If it doesn’t, then it may be false and dead. So, we must check out if our faith is authentic and practical. Also, we must examine if our faith is rooted in Christ. As we inspect our car regularly for safe driving, so we should inspect our faith for spiritual health. Practical faith is concerned with actual life. It doesn’t seek idealistic figment or impossibility. It set its feet on reality and stands on it. It doesn’t disregard reality. But it is not shackled by reality. The stage of faith is not heaven, but real-life setting. It is conscious of and reliant on God’s presence in daily living. It doesn’t surrender to impossible reality. But it trusts God’s providence and accept such reality as it is. Instead of asserting healing from terminal cancer is the only will of God, it trusts God’s presence and providence during the struggle against it. Since it confidently hopes in the reality of heaven, such faith rises above death. Of course, we can be healed of terminal cancer if God wills. But, insisting on healing without condition is not practical faith, but misled faith. Genuine and practical faith asks for God’s grace and strength to endure during its struggle against terminal disease. It strives not merely to be healed, but primarily to carry out God’s will. It strives to live under God’s reign. Our confession of faith is to live in gratitude for our belonging to Christ in life and death. This is what practical faith working in actual living is all about. God is pleased with such faith. Such faith experiences God deeply and enjoys intimacy with God. It enjoys oneness with Christ and rejoices amid suffering. Those possessing such faith are victors of whom the world is not worthy (Heb. 11:38). Let’s keep in mind the following Scripture: “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Heb. 11:6).
