전쟁과 평화(War and Peace)

열흘 전에 러시아가 우크라이나를 침공했습니다. 안타깝게도 민간인 희생자가 급증하고 있습니다. 러시아 군대는 금지된 무기를 사용으로 우크라이나에 피해를 가중시키고 있습니다. 우크라이나는 평화를 원합니다. 러시아에 도발 하지도 않았습니다. 러시아는 위협을 받지 않았습니다. 그럼에도 명분이 없는 침략을 자행하였습니다. 이웃 나라를 무참하게 짓밟고 있습니다. 전 세계가 우크라이나의 피해 소식을 매일 접하며 정의롭지 못한 전쟁에 희생당하는 우크라이나를 지지하고 있습니다. 서구 세계는 러시아에 경제 제재를 가했습니다. 러시아는 경제적인 타격을 입었습니다. 사실 전 세계 경제가 타격을 받았습니다. 인류 역사는 전쟁으로 인한 피로 얼룩져 있습니다. 셀 수 없이 많은 무고한 사람들이 죽었습니다. 전쟁은 잔인합니다. 주권, 자유, 생명을 빼앗아 갑니다. 핍박, 탄압, 착취가 일어납니다. 잊을 수 없는 상처를 남겨줍니다. 전쟁은 이렇게 악한 것입니다. 권력의 대한 욕망은 대부분 전쟁의 원인입니다. 절대적인 권력은 절대적으로 부패합니다. 예수님의 말씀대로 칼을 잡은 자는 칼로 망합니다(마26:52). 역사는 이를 증거합니다. 칼로 권력을 영원히 유지할 수 없습니다. 칼은 자기 방어로 쓰여야 합니다. 칼은 평화 유지에 사용될 수 있습니다. 하지만 칼로 이웃을 해하는 자는 칼로 망합니다. 칼은 평화의 도구가 되어야 합니다. 악을 억제하고 악인을 벌하는 수단이 되어야 합니다. 그러나 칼의 힘은 사람을 근본적으로 바꿀 수 없습니다. 칼의 힘은 평화의 사람을 만들어 낼 수가 없습니다. 진정한 평화는 사랑의 힘에서 옵니다. 우리는 이러한 평화를 예수님의 십자가 사랑에서 발견합니다. 이 사랑의 힘은 칼의 힘보다 무한하게 강합니다. 우리는 이러한 사랑의 힘을 사용하여 세상에 평화를 실현해 가야 합니다. 칼의 힘이 필요한 곳에는 칼을 사용해야 합니다. 이 때도 사랑의 정신으로 사용해야 합니다. 예수님은 칼로 이 세상을 변화시킨 것이 아닙니다. 그는 희생적인 사랑으로 사람들의 마음을 변화시킵니다. 폭력적인 사람을 평화의 사람으로 변화시킵니다. 우리는 하루 속히 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁이 끝나길 기도하고 있습니다. 그리고 평화가 회복되길 기도하고 있습니다. 핵무기는 사람을 위협하고 종처럼 부릴 수는 있습니다. 하지만 사람의 마음을 변화시켜 평화의 관계를 이룰 수는 없습니다. 하나님께서 우크라이나의 난민들을 긍휼히 여기시며 그들의 고통에서 건져 주시길 기도합시다. 이들이 예수 그리스도 안에서 참 소망을 발견하도록 기도합시다. 또한 그리스도의 사랑으로 평화를 되찾도록 기도합시다. 두려움에 울부짖는 우크라이나 국민들에게 평화의 소식이 속히 전해지도록 간구합시다. 

Russia invaded Ukraine about ten days ago. Unfortunately, civilian casualties are on the sharp rise. Using weapons widely banned across the world, Russian forces are increasing damages to Ukraine. Ukraine wants peace. It didn’t provoke Russia. Russia didn’t get threatened. However, it started an unjustifiable war against Ukraine. It is trampling on Ukraine its neighbor. Daily hearing of damage in Ukraine, the whole world gives support to the Ukrainians victimized by the unjust war. The Western world has laid economic sanctions against Russia. The Russian economy was hit hard. In fact, worldwide economy was hit hard, too. Human history is tainted with blood by war. A incalculable number of innocent people were killed. War is atrocious. It takes away sovereignty, freedom and life. Persecution, oppression, and exploitation take place. Unforgettable wounds linger on. So, war is utterly evil. Greed for power causes most wars. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Jesus said, “All who take the sword will perish by the sword” (Matt. 26:52). History testifies to it. We can’t have power by the sword forever. The sword is to be used for self-defense. It is to be used for peace-keeping. But those who harm their neighbors by the sword will perish by the sword. The sword is to be a means of peace. It is to be a means of restraining evil and punishing evildoers. But the power of the sword can’t fundamentally change people. It can’t produce people of peace. True peace comes from the power of love. We find such peace in the love of Jesus on the cross. The power of such love is infinitely more powerful that of the sword. Using the power of such love, we must be realizing peace in the world. We must use the sword, wherever it is necessary. Even here, we must employ it with the spirit of love. Jesus doesn’t change the world by the sword. He changes the hearts of people by His sacrificial love. His love changes a violent one into a peaceful one. We are praying that the war between Russia and Ukraine comes to an end as quickly as possible. Also, we are praying that peace will be restored. Furthermore, we are praying that the peace of Jesus Christ is given to both Russia the aggressor and Ukraine the victim. Nuclear weapon may threaten people and control them as slaves. But it can neither change the hearts of peace nor work out a peaceful relationship. Let’s pray that God takes compassion on the Ukrainian refugees and delivers them from their sufferings. Let’s pray that they find true hope in Jesus Christ. Also, let’s pray that they find peace through the love of Christ. Let’s plead with God that the news of peace will be proclaimed soon to the Ukrainian people crying out in fear.
