마음의 불 붙이기(Kindling the heart)

마음의 상태는 믿음 생활의 상태에 큰 영향을 미칩니다. 마음이 냉랭하면 신앙 생활이 냉랭합니다. 마음이 그리스도로 인하여 뜨거우면 신앙 생활에 활력이 넘칩니다. 마음이 죄로 인하여 완악하면 믿음 생활이 죽습니다. 예수님이 천국 복음을 전하며 사역을 시작하셨을 때 유대인들은 그를 배척하였습니다. 예수님은 천국이 가까이 왔으니 회개하라고 외치셨습니다.

유대교 지도자들은 종교적 위선에 빠져 그를 신성모독자로 정죄하였습니다. 이들의 마음은 추운 겨울 얼어붙은 땅처럼 굳어 있었습니다. 예수님은 속죄의 십자가를 지시기 위하여 예루살렘으로 가시며 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다: “내가 불을 땅에 던지러 왔노니 이 불이 이미 붙었으면 내가 무엇을 원하리요”(눅12:49). 위선적 종교 의식에 흠뻑 젖어 있는 마음에 천국 복음의 불은 붙지 않았습니다. 생계의 염려로 젖어 있는 마음도 불이 붙지 않기는 마찬가지였습니다. 의심의 늪에 빠져 있는 마음도 불이 붙지 않았습니다. 각종 죄악의 파도에 밀려 요동하는 마음에도 복음의 불이 붙지 않기는 매한가지였습니다. 예수님은 이러한 자들의 마음을 답답해 하셨습니다. 이들의 종교적 외식을 폭로하셨습니다. 이들은 하늘의 상태를 보며 날씨가 어떨지는 분별하지만 타락한 세대에 젖은 자기 마음의 상태는 분별하지 못하였습니다. 예수님은 하나님의 심판이 임하기 전에 철저하게 회개하는 것만이 마음에 성령의 불을 붙이는 길임을 말씀해 주셨습니다. 우리는 세속의 사조와 오락의 파도에 마음이 흠뻑 젖은 세대에 살고 있습니다. 많은 사람들이 종교적 위선의 마스크를 쓰고 마음의 부패함을 가려봅니다. 종교적 열심의 가면을 쓰고 마음의 허무함을 달려보려 합니다. 하지만 그 어느 것도 마음에 참 생명을 주지 못합니다. 부흥의 불이 타오르려면 회개의 부르짖음이 있어야 합니다. 옷이 아닌 마음을 찢는 통회하는 회개가 있어야 합니다. 이 조차도 우리 마음대로 되지 않습니다. 하나님께 회개할 수 있는 은혜를 주시도록 겸손히 구해야 합니다. 우리 은혜 교회에 회개의 불이 붙어야 합니다. 성령으로 기도하는 불이 붙어야 합니다. 그리스도를 열심으로 섬기는 불이 붙어야 합니다. 라오디게아 교회처럼 미지근한 상태에 머물러서는 안됩니다. 그것은 우리 영혼의 목을 조르는 길입니다. 형식주의, 외식, 자기의의 가면을 벗어야 합니다. 그리스도 없이는 아무 것도 할 수 없다는 절박한 믿음이 필요합니다. 전심으로 하나님께 돌아갑시다. 하나님의 말씀을 들읍시다: “여호와의 말씀에 너희는 이제라도 금식하며 울며 애통하고 마음을 다하여 내게로 돌아오라 하셨나니 너희는 옷을 찢지 말고 마음을 찢고 너희 하나님 여호와께로 돌아올찌어다 그는 은혜로우시며 자비로우시며 노하기를 더디하시며 인애가 크시사 뜻을 돌이켜 재앙을 내리지 아니하시나니”(요엘2:12-13). 

The condition of the heart makes a great influence on the condition of faith life. If the heart is cold, faith life is cold. If the heart is burning with Christ, faith life is filled with vitality. If the heart is calloused by sin, faith life will die out. When He launched His kingdom ministry by proclaiming its gospel, the Jews rejected Him. He cried out, “Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand.” But the Jewish leaders, soaked in religious hypocrisy, condemned Jesus as a blasphemer. Their hearts were hardened like frozen ground in the winter. As He approached Jerusalem to fulfill His redemptive purpose on the cross, Jesus said as follows: “I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled!” (Lk. 12:49). The gospel of the kingdom of God didn’t fire in the heart deeply soaked in religious hypocrisy and ritualism. Nor was the heart drenched in cares of survival in life. Also, it didn’t fire in the heart bogged in doubt. Nor was the heart moving to and fro by the waves of all kinds of sin. Jesus was distressed about the hearts of such people. He exposed their religious hypocrisy. They were unable to discern the condition of their own hearts drowned in the corrupt generation even though they were able to discern what the weather would be like by looking at the face of the sky. Jesus told them repentance was a way to set fire of the Holy Spirit on their hearts before the judgment of God would come upon. We are living in an age wholly soaked in the waves of secular thoughts and entertainments. Many try to cover the corruptions of their hearts with their masks of religious hypocrisy on. They strive to soothe the emptiness of their hearts with their masks of religious fervor on. But none of them gives true life to their hearts. There should be cries of repentance for fire of revival to be caught. There should be repentance that rends the hearts, not the garments. We can’t do it as we please. We must humbly seek God’s grace whereby we can truly repent. We must set fire of repentance on our Grace Church. We must set fire of prayer in the Spirit. We must set fire of serving Christ with passion. We shouldn’t be like the Laodicean church that stayed lukewarm. Lukewarmness is a way to stifling our spirits. We must take off our masks of ritualism, hypocrisy, and self-righteousness. We need such a desperate faith that we can do nothing apart from Christ. Let’s return to God with all our hearts. Let’s listen to the word of God: “Yet even now," declares the LORD, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments." Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster” (Joel 2:12-13).
