겁과 위선(Fear and Hypocrisy)

우리는 권력자를 두려워하기도 합니다. 그들이 우리에게 해를 가할 권세가 있기 때문입니다. 그래서 그들을 기쁘게 하려는 말을 하기 쉽습니다. 그 말이 틀린 것이라도 우리의 안전, 성공, 유익을 위하여 합니다. 옳고 그름과는 상관이 없습니다. 살기 위해서라면 어떤 거짓말도 하려는 본능이 있습니다. 죽음에 대한 공포를 느낄 때 이 본능은 강력하게 우리를 주장합니다. 결과적으로 우리는 마음에 없는 말을 하게 됩니다. 이것은 위선입니다. 좋은 사람으로 인정 받으려는 욕구에서 위선이 비롯됩니다. 또한 사람을 두려워 함에서도 위선이 기인합니다. 우리가 힘 있는 사람을 두려워하고 그 마음을 얻으려 할 때 위선적인 말을 하기 쉽습니다. 위선적 태도가 삶을 지배하면 삶이 피곤해 집니다. 자유하지 못합니다. 사람들의 눈치를 보며 옳고 필요한 말을 하지 않습니다. 사람들의 마음을 불편하게 하지 않으려 진리. 거짓말을 해서라도 상대의 마음과 인정을 받으려 합니다. 예수님 당시 종교 지도자들이 그랬습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 바리새인의 누룩, 곧 위선을 주의하라고 말씀하셨습니다. 은밀하게 한 모든 말은 알려지게 될 것입니다. 어떤 위선자들은 사람들 앞에서는 예수 그리스도를 모른다고 합니다. 그렇게 말하면 핍박을 받고 사회에서 쫓겨날 수 있기 때문입니다. 그런데 신자들만 모인 자리에서는 예수 그리스도를 시인합니다. 예수님을 이것을 위선이라고 말합니다. 몸만 해할 수 있는 사람들을 두려워 말고 몸과 영혼을 지옥에 멸할 수 있는 하나님을 두려워 하고 말씀하십니다. 진실로 하나님은 머리털까지 세실 정도로 그렇게 우리를 세심하게 보살피시는 아버지이십니다. 우리가 이분을 경외할 때 사람에 대한 두려움을 극복할 수 있습니다. 그러면 사람들 앞에서도 진실을 말할 수 있습니다. 예수님을 구주-왕으로 공개적으로 고백할 수 있습니다. 권력자들에게 목숨의 위협을 당할 때에도 성령이 그 때 주시는 진실된 말씀을 할 수 있습니다. 저는 겁이 많습니다. 사람들을 두려워합니다. 솔직하게 말하면 눈에 보이지 않는 하나님보다 눈에 보이는 사람이 두렵습니다. 사람들의 마음을 불편하게 하여 멀어질까 두렵습니다. 불편한 진실을 말해서 사람들을 잃어버릴까 두렵습니다. 전도할 때도 그들의 마음을 불쾌하게 하여 분위기가 삭막해 질까 두렵습니다. 사람들의 마음과 인정을 얻고 싶기 때문입니다. 그래서 위선적인 말을 하는 자신을 발견합니다. 이것이 잘못된 것임을 압니다. 그래서 성령의 도우심을 구합니다. 하나님을 경외하는 마음을 구합니다. 주님은 위선을 싫어하시고 진실을 좋아하십니다. 우리가 그리스도 안에서 하나님을 경외할 때 사람에 대한 두려움을 극복하고 진실된 사람이 될 수 있습니다. 우리 모두 이러한 사람이 되길 기원합니다.  

We may fear the powerful. It is because they have power to do us harm. So, we tend to speak words to please them. Even though our words may be wrong, we still speak them for our safety, success, and benefits. It doesn’t really matter whether they are right or wrong. We have a natural instinct to speak any falsehood in order to survive. When we feel a terror of death, such instinct forcibly controls us. As a result, we are likely to say something that is not in our hearts. This is hypocrisy. Hypocrisy arises from a desire to be recognized as an important person. Also, it comes from a fear of men. When we fear the powerful and try to win their hearts, we are likely to speak hypocritical words. If such a hypocritical attitude controls our lives, we will be wearied in our lives. We have no freedom. Studying another’s face, we don’t speak truthful and necessary words. We do not speak the truth in order not to displease the hearts of others. We try to win another’s heart and approval by speaking falsehoods. So were the religious leaders at the day of Jesus. Jesus told the disciples to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, that is, hypocrisy. All words spoken in secret shall be made known. Some hypocrites said before people, “I do not Jesus Christ.” If they said so, they would be persecuted and excommunicated from their community. But they confessed Jesus Christ among believers alone. Jesus called it hypocrisy. He told the disciples to fear God who has authority to destroy both the body and the soul in hell rather than those who do the body harm. Indeed, God is the Father who takes care of us carefully to the extent that He numbers even all our hairs. When we reverence God in awe, we can overcome fear of men. If so, we can speak the truth before people. We can publicly confess Jesus as our Savior-King. Even when we are threatened with death by the powerful, we can speak the truthful words the Holy Spirit gives us at that time. I have a lot of fear. I am afraid of people. Frankly speaking, I fear visible people more than the invisible God. But I have a desire to fear God. I am afraid that I might be estranged from people by offending their hearts. I am afraid that I might lose them by speaking the uncomfortable truth. When I witness Christ to others, I am afraid they might be displeased and the whole atmosphere might be bleak. It is all because I desire to earn the hearts and approval of people. So, I find myself speaking hypocritical words. I know it is wrong. So, I seek the Spirit for help. I ask for a heart of reverencing God in awe. The Lord hates hypocrisy and love truthfulness. When we fear God in Christ, we can overcome fear of men and become truthful. May all of us be such truthful people!
