앎과 누림(Knowing and Enjoying)

소크라테스는 “너 자신을 알라” 말했습니다. 아는 것은 유익합니다. 자신의 연약함을 알면 겸손할 수 있습니다. 자신의 재능을 알아 그것을 개발하면 발전할 수 있습니다. 자신의 존재를 알면 의미 있는 삶을 살 수 있습니다. 이와 같이 자신을 아는 것은 도움이 됩니다. 우리 신자들도 자신을 알아야 합니다. 하나님은 참 지식의 근원이십니다. 그러므로 하나님을 알아야 우리 자신을 바르게 알 수 있습니다. 하나님을 알려면 그의 계시인 성경을 알아야 합니다. 요즘 사람들은 성경을 집에 비치하고 있습니다. 하지만 성경에 대하여는 무지합니다. 안타까운 것은 많은 신자들도 성경에 대하여 무지합니다. 그래서 하나님에 대하여 바르게 알지 못하고 자신에 대하여도 바르게 알지 못합니다. 결과적으로 신자들의 말씀에 대한 무지는 여러 문제를 야기하였습니다. 많은 사람들이 이단들에게 쉽게 넘어갑니다. 젊은이들이 삶의 방향을 잃고 방황합니다. 교회들이 분비를 반복하며 해체됩니다. 신자들은 그리스도 안의 자유를 누리지 못합니다. 구원의 소중함을 알지 못합니다. 이들의 믿음은 기복 신앙으로 전락합니다.  요즘 신형 자동차들은 첨단 전자 장치가 장착되어 있습니다. 큰 스크린의 인포테인먼트 안에 새로운 것들이 들어 있습니다. 하지만 많은 이들이 그 안에 어떤 장치들이 있고 어떻게 그것들을 조정하고 어떤 편리함과 재미를 주는지 모릅니다. 그냥 운전만 할 뿐입니다. 저의 차에도 여러 장치들이 있습니다. 제게는 복잡하고 어렵게만 느껴집니다. 그래서 알려고 하지 않습니다. 운전할 수 있기 때문에 굳이 그런 것들을 알려고 시도하지 않습니다. 운전만 하면 몰라도 된다고 생각합니다. 물론 그런 것들이 어떤 것인지 알고 사용하면 더욱 안전하고 재미 있게 운전할 수 있다는 것도 압니다. 하지만 복잡하고 어려운 것을 공부해 보려고 하지 않습니다. 그래서 좋은 것들을 누리지 못합니다. 마찬가지로 많은 신자들이 성경이 복잡하고 어렵다는 이유로 성경을 읽지 않습니다. 주일 설교 듣는 것이 다입니다. 온라인으로 좋아하는 설교자들의 설교를 듣는 것으로 성경을 안다고 생각합니다. 하지만 성경을 모릅니다. 성경을 읽고 공부하며 묵상하려고 시도하지 않습니다. 그래서 성경은 이들에게 닫혀 있고 먼지가 수북한 책이 됩니다. 최신형 차를 몰면서 그 모든 장치의 유익을 누리지 못하는 것과 같습니다. 매뉴얼을 보고 자세하게 공부하고 장치들을 사용해 보아야 합니다. 그래야 최신형 장치의 유익을 누릴 수 있게 됩니다. 마찬가지로 하나님 말씀을 자세하게 공부하며 우리 자신과 하나님을 알아야 합니다. 그러면 그리스도 안에서 더욱 많은 자유와 은혜를 누릴 수 있습니다. 이러한 은혜가 충만하길 기원합니다. 

Socrates said, “Know yourself.” Knowledge is profitable. If we know ourselves, we can be humble. If we know our talents, we can develop them and improve ourselves. If we know our existence, we can live a meaningful life. So, knowing ourselves is helpful. We believers should know ourselves. God is the Source of true knowledge. So, we can know ourselves rightly by knowing God. To know God, we must know His revelation, that is, the Bible. These days, people display their Bibles at home. But they are ignorant of the Bible. Unfortunately, a great number of believers do not know the Bible. So, they have no right knowledge of God and themselves. As a result, their ignorance of the Bible causes a number of problems. Many are easily snared into heretical groups. Young people wander without setting their direction of life. Churches repeat divisions and get disbanded. Believers do not enjoy freedom in Christ. They do not appreciate their precious salvation. Their faith degenerates into shamanistic belief. Recently, brand new cars are equipped with most advanced electronic devices. There are all kinds of new things in a huge infotainment screen. But a lot of people do not know what devices are in it, how to manipulate them, and what kinds of conveniences and funs are offered in it. They simply drive their new cars. I know I have such devices in my car. But I feel they are complex and difficult. So, I do not try to know them. Since I can drive it, I don’t give it a try to find out what is in it. I don’t think I need to know about them as long as I can drive the car. Of course, I know I can have more safety and fun if I know what they are and utilize them. But I don’t try to study what I feel complex and difficult. So, I am not able to enjoy good things. Likewise, many believers do not read the Bible because they feel it to be complicated and difficult. Listening to Sunday sermon is all they do. They feel like knowing the Bible by listening to their favorite preachers through online. But they do not know the Bible. They do not attempt to read, study, and meditate on the Bible. So, the Bible becomes a closed and dusty book to them. It is like driving a most recent model without enjoying the benefits of all those devices. They should thoroughly study the manual and try to use the gadgets in order to enjoy benefits of the new devices. In like manner, we should study the Bible thoroughly and know both God and ourselves. In so doing, we can enjoy much more freedom and grace in Christ. May you be filled with such grace!
