금요일 저녁 기도회(Friday Night Prayer Meeting)

은혜 교회 금요일 저녁 기도회는 은혜를 경험하는 산실이었습니다. 교회 개척 초기에는 토요일 아침에 기도회를 열었습니다. 참석 인원이 거의 없었습니다. 그래서 금요일 저녁 9시 기도회로 바꾸었습니다. 더 많은 인원이 참여하여 기도하였습니다. 여러 해를 9시에 모이다가 찬양팀이 조직된 후에는 저녁 8시에 모였습니다. 첫 30분은 찬양을 하였습니다. 그리고 말씀을 나눈 후에 각자 기도 시간을 가졌습니다. 후에는 기도의 형식을 다양화 하였습니다. 함께 통성으로 기도할 때도 있었고, 각자 조용히 기도할 때도 있었습니다. 한 사람씩 중앙에 앉게 한 후에 모두가 그 사람을 위하여 기도하는 때도 있었습니다. 어떤 때는 간증을 듣는 때도 있었습니다. 기도 시간에는 조용하게 찬송가 CD를 틀어 놓고 기도하였습니다. 갑자기 코로나 바이러스 팬데믹이 터졌습니다. 학생들은 모두 집으로 돌아갔습니다. 자연스럽게 금요일 저녁 기도회는 멈추게 되었습니다. 후에 밥죤스 대학생들이 돌아 왔습니다. 전처럼 기도회를 가지면 좋겠다고 해서 몇 명이 다시 모여 기도하기 시작했습니다. 금요일 저녁 기도회는 주로 대학생들이 나왔습니다. 졸업할 때까지 금요일 저녁 기도회를 충실하게 참석한 학생들이 있었습니다. 학교 생활로 바쁜 와중에도 저녁 기도회는 빠지지 않았습니다. 기도회는 학생들에게 인기가 있었습니다. 학업 문제, 진로 문제, 가족 구원 문제, 건강 문제, 가족 기도, 친구 중보 기도, 교회를 위한 기도 등등 많은 기도 제목을 내놓고 기도하였습니다. 하나님의 응답도 많이 경험하였습니다. 졸업생 중에는 금요일 저녁 기도회가 너무 좋았다고 간증하는 친구들도 있었습니다. 힘들고 지칠 때 재충전을 하는 은혜의 장소였다고 했습니다. 미국 학생 중에도 금요일 저녁 기도회를 빠지지 않고 참석한 학생들이 있었습니다. 미국 교회에는 없는 금요일 저녁 기도회 시간이라 이들도 기도회를 통하여 하나님의 은혜를 구하고 체험하였습니다. 지난 학기까지 기도회를 열었는데 방학이 되면서 모임이 멈추었습니다. 여름 휴가를 다녀온 후 저는 새벽 기도회를 다시 시작하였습니다. 금요일 저녁 기도회 대신에 토요일 아침 기도회를 열었습니다. 여러분이 꾸준히 참석하며 은혜로운 시간을 가졌습니다. 후에 우리 대학생들이 부르짖던 금요일 저녁 기도회가 필요하다는 생각이 들어서 몇몇 학생들의 의견을 물어 보았습니다. 다시금 시작했으면 좋겠다는 응답이 있었습니다. 그래서 11월 5일에 다시금 금요일 저녁 기도회를 시작했습니다. 10명이 참석하여 은혜로운 시간을 보냈습니다. 금요일 저녁 기도회를 통하여 하나님을 향한 사랑과 열정이 다시금 타오르길 기도합니다. 기도는 신앙 생활의 엔진에 연료와 같습니다. 기도의 연료가 없으면 신앙 생활이 전진할 수 없습니다. 금요일 저녁 기도회가 은혜 교회의 사역과 교우들의 삶에 활력을 불어 넣기를 기원합니다. 

Friday Night Prayer has been a special time of grace for our Grace Church. During the early period of our church planting, we held Saturday Early Morning Prayer Meeting. But, we had few attending it. So, we switched it to Friday Night 9 o’clock Prayer Meeting. Due to the change, we had a better turnout for prayer. For a few years, we had met to pray at 9 o’clock. But since we had a praise team formed, we switched to the 8:00 o’clock meeting. For the first thirty minutes, we had a praise time. After that, I preached the word of God. Then, each of us had a prayer time. Afterwards, we varied the format of our prayer time. Sometimes, all of us cry out in unison. Other times, we prayed quietly. Once in a while, we let each one sit in the middle and the rest of us prayed for that person. Also, we had a testimonial time. During the prayer time, we played a hymn CD quietly and prayed. In the meantime, the coronavirus pandemic broke out. Our college student went back home. Friday Night Prayer naturally came to a halt. Afterwards, Bob Jones students returned. Some wanted to have a prayer time on Friday night as before. So, several of us got together and began our Friday Night Prayer meeting. The attendees of this prayer meeting were primarily students. Some students faithfully had attended it until they graduated. Though they were busy with their school work, they didn’t skip it. Friday Night Prayer Meeting was quite popular among our students. They prayed for their school work, their future careers, unsaved family members, health issues, family issues, etc. Also, they interceded for their friends, church, etc. They abundantly experienced God’s answers. Some graduates testified that Friday Night Prayer Meeting was their favorite. When they felt difficult and tired, they would be recharged with God’s grace during the prayer meeting. Some American students faithfully attended the prayer meeting. Since American churches do not have Friday Night Prayer meeting, they sought and experienced God’s grace through the prayer meeting. Up until the last semester, we were able to hold the prayer meeting. But after the summer break started, it stopped. After my summer vacation, I resumed Early Morning Prayer Meeting. I replaced Friday Night Prayer Meeting with Saturday Early Morning Prayer Meeting. We have had several faithful ones at Saturday Morning Prayer Meeting. Later on, I felt that Friday Night Prayer meeting, during which our students used to cry out to God, should be resumed. So, I asked a few students whether they would want the prayer meeting back or not. They said, “Yes.” So, we started the prayer meeting again on Nov. 5. Ten people attended it and spent a grace-filled time. It is my prayer that our hearts would be rekindled with passion and love for God through Friday Night Prayer time. Prayer fuels the engine of the life of faith. Without the fuel of prayer, we can’t move forward in the life of faith. I pray that God would bless our Friday Night Prayer time to revitalize the ministries of our Grace Church and the members and friends of our Grace Church.
