에베소서 묵상을 시작하며(Beginning to mediate on Ephesians)

에베소서는 성경에서 시편과 로마서와 더불어 가장 많이 사랑 받는 책입니다. 바울의 모든 신학이 농축되어 있는 놀라운 편지입니다. 많은 크리스천이 에베소서를 가장 좋아하는 책이라 말하는 것을 들었습니다. 저도 개인적으로 에베소서를  시편과 함께 가장 좋아합니다. 전에 수요 성경 공부에서도 에베소서 공부를 시작했다고 사람이 모이지 못해서 2장 중간 부분을 다루다 멈추었습니다. 저는 에베소서에서 여러 번 설교한 경험이 있습니다. 마틴 로이드 존스 목사님은 에베소서를 여러 해 강해하셨는데 그의 강해집이 6권이나 됩니다. 우리는 이미 창세기 묵상을 마쳤습니다. 구약에서 한번 신약에서 한번 번갈아 할 계획을 세웠기 때문에 신약에서 어떤 책을 할까 고민했습니다. 순서대로 하면 마태복음을 선택해야 하는데 꼭 순서대로 할 필요는 없다는 생각이 들었습니다. 이런 와중에 로마서와 에베소서가 마음에 다가왔습니다. 그러다 둘 중에 에베소서를 택한 이유는 그 길이 짧기 때문입니다. 또한 그 내용이 깊기 때문입니다. 바울은 에베소서에서 그리스도 안에서 우리의 신분이 어떤 것인지를 첫 세 장에서 다룹니다. 하나님이 그리스도 안에서 성령을 통하여 우리를 위하여 행하신 일을 서술합니다. 이를 요약하면 하나님의 선택, 그리스도의 구속, 성령의 인치심 입니다. 죄와 허물로 죽었던 우리를 사랑하셔서 은혜로 구원해 주신 것입니다. 우리는 그 은혜로 그리스도와 연합한 자가 되었습니다. 우리의 구원은 확실합니다. 우리는 이러한 사실을 늘 기억하며 놀라운 구원으로 인하여 하나님께 감사해야 합니다. 바울은 첫 3장에서 우리가 알아야 할 신학을 서술한 후 다음 세 장에서는 우리가 어떻게 살아야 하는지에 대한 윤리를 말합니다. 그리스도 안에 자신이 누구인지 아는 자들은 그리스도 안에서 어떻게 살아야 하는지를 고민합니다. 바울은 이에 대한 답을 4-6장에서 주고 있습니다. 먼저 세상의 썩어져 갈 구습을 벗어 버립니다. 그리고 의와 거룩함으로 새 옷을 입습니다. 그리스도와 하나가 되었기에 세상과 짝되지 않고 빛의 자녀로 살아갑니다. 바울은 빛의 자녀로 부부 관계, 부모와 자녀 관계, 고용주와 고용인의 관계를 어떻게 바르게 맺어야 하는지를 가르쳐 줍니다. 그리고 끝으로 사탄과 그 졸개를 대항하여 서기 위해서 하나님의 전신 갑주를 입을 것을 권고합니다. 우리가 영적 전쟁에서 이기려면 그리스도의 복음과 은혜로 무장하고 성령 안에서 기도해야 합니다. 구원의 복음의 내용, 능력, 은혜를 알지 못하고 적용하지 못하면 바른 삶을 살수가 없습니다. 바르게 아는 것은 바르게 사는 것에 필수입니다. 내일부터 시작되는 에베소서 묵상을 통해서 배우고 성장 하시길 기도합니다. 

Ephesians is one of the most favorite books in the Bible, along with Psalms and Romans. It is a Pauline epistle in which all Paulin thoughts are summed up. I have heard many Christians saying Ephesians is their most favorite book. I personally like the book of Ephesians most along with Psalms. I started the book of Ephesians in our Wednesday Bible Study in the past. But I had to quit in the middle of Ephesians Chapter 2 because no one showed up. I have preached from the book of Ephesians numerous times. Martyn Lloyd Jones did his six-volume expository sermon series on the book of Ephesians for years. We have done our study of the book of Genesis. I was wondering which book would be good for our reflection since I intended to take turns in an OT book and a NT book. I was supposed to pick the book of Matthew according to the book order of the Bible. But, I thought I didn’t need to follow the order. Then, Romans and Ephesians came to my mind. I picked Ephesians because it is shorter in length and it has depth in content. In the first three chapters, Paul deals with what is our Christian status in Christ.  in the first three chapters. He explains what God has done in Christ through the Holy Spirit. In short, Paul talks of God’s election, Christ’s redemption, and the Spirit’s sealing. We used to be dead in sins and transgressions. But God so loved us that He saved us by grace. We are united with Christ by the same grace. Our salvation is so sure. We must always keep it in mind and give thanks to God for His wonderful salvation. Paul talks about theology in the first three chapters we should know and talks about ethics concerning how to live in the next three chapters. Those who know their status in Christ are concerned about how they are to live in Christ. Paul explains it in chapters 4-6. First, we are to put off the corrupt traditions of the world. Then, we are to put on the new clothing of righteousness and holiness. Since we are one with Christ, we break off our friendship with the world and live as the children of light. Paul teaches us how to make right relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, and employers and employees. Then, he exhorts us to put on the whole armor of God to fight Satan and his pawns. To win victory in our spiritual battle, we must pray in the Spirit as we arm ourselves with the gospel and grace of Christ. We can’t live right without knowing and applying the content, power, and grace of the gospel of salvation. Right knowing is necessary for right living. It is my prayer that you learn and grow by meditating on Ephesians, which starts off tomorrow.
