새 학기(A New Semester)

이 번주부터 밥죤스 대학은 가을 학기를 시작합니다. 무덥고 긴 여름 방학이 지났습니다. 한국 집으로 돌아갔던 학생들이 돌아왔습니다. 전에 학교 다닐 때 생각이 납니다. 저는 여름 동안 학교에서 일을 하였습니다. 여름 방학이 길게 느껴질 때쯤 벌써 개학이 되었나 하고 생각했습니다. 방학이 끝나갈 때쯤 학생들이 하나 둘 돌아오는 것을 보며 가을 학기가 곧 시작하는 구나 느끼곤 하였습니다. 우리 은혜 교회에는 감사한 일이 많지만 그 중에서도 한국 유학생들이 있다는 것입니다. 저는 이들과 함께 기도하고 예배할 수 있어서 참 감사합니다. 금요일 기도회는 우리 교회의 주중에 있는 중요한 모임입니다. 이 모임은 우리 학생들로 이루어져 있습니다. 학생들의 기도는 은혜 교회 사역의 소중한 부분을 차지합니다. 주일 예배 때 학생들이 찬양팀을 이끕니다. 신학생들은 중/고등부 예배도 인도합니다. 우리 학생들은 주일 친교 음식 준비에도 참여하며 봉사합니다. 설거지 봉사도 합니다. 교회에 돌볼 일이 있을 때는 함께 참여하여 일합니다. 이 번 주부터 새벽 기도회를 다시 시작하였습니다. 몇몇 학생들이 참여하였습니다. 그 동안 차일피일 기도회를 미루고 있었는데 어떤 학생이 새벽 기도회가 있는지 물어 보았고 같이 기도하자고 시작하였습니다. 비록 졸업 후에는 대부분이 떠나가지만 4년 간 함께 하는 시간은 매우 소중합니다. 우리 학생들은 은혜 교회의 손님이 아니라 가족입니다. 우리는 이들에게 사랑의 빚을 지고 있습니다. 이들의 찬양, 기도, 교제, 섬김이 감사할 뿐입니다. 다시금 새학기를 시작하는 학생들에게 격려와 당부의 말을 전하고 싶습니다. 예수님은 여러분과 함께 하시니 염려할 필요가 없습니다. 예수님과 동행하는 학기가 되길 기원합니다. 예수님을 배우는 하기가 되었으면 합니다. 예수님을 의지하며 하나님께서 주신 배움의 기회를 잘 선용하여 성숙하고 성장하기를 권고 드립니다. 여름 방학 동안 흐트러진 마음의 자세를 바로 세우고 새 출발을 했으면 좋겠습니다. 새 학기를 적응하는데 시간이 걸릴 것입니다. 첫 2주간을 정신을 차리고 충실히 학과목을 공부하며 적응 하길 권고합니다. 이 번 학기에도 새로운 학생들이 교회에 왔으면 하는 기대를 합니다. 몇 명이 될지는 몰라도 은혜 교회 식구가 될 학생들을 보내주시기를 주님께 기도합니다. 새 학기는 새로운 도전입니다. 기대치 않은 어려움이 있을 것입니다. 그러나 새 학기는 새로운 기회이기도 합니다. 주님의 신실함과 선하심을 의지하며 이 기회를 자기 발전을 통하여 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 기회로 삼기를 기도합니다.  

This week marks the start of the fall semester at Bob Jones University. It's been a long, hot summer vacation. Our students, who returned to their homes in Korea, have come back to school. I remember when I was in school before. I worked at school during the summer. When summer vacation seemed long, I thought, "It's already back to school." Toward the end of the summer, I saw students returning one by one, and I knew the fall semester was about to begin. We have many things to be thankful for at Grace Church, not the least of which is the presence of Korean international students, and I am so thankful to be able to pray and worship with them. Friday prayer meeting is an important mid-week gathering at our church, and it is made up of our students. Student prayer is a valuable part of the ministry of Grace Church. Students lead the praise team during Sunday services. Bible major students also lead the middle and high school worship services. Our students participate in the ministry of Sunday fellowship meal preparation. They also serve as dishwashers and work together when the church needs to be taken care of. We started having early morning prayer again this week, and a few students have joined in. I had been putting off having early morning prayer for a while, and one of the students asked if there was one, and we started praying together. Although most of them leave after graduation, the time we spend with them for four years is very precious. Our students are not just guests at Grace Church, they are family. We owe them a debt of love. We are grateful for their praise, prayer, fellowship, and service. Once again, I want to offer words of encouragement and exhortation to our students as they begin a new semester. You don’t need to worry because Jesus is with you. I pray that it will be a semester for you to walk with Jesus. May it be a semester of learning about Jesus! I encourage you to rely on Jesus and to use the learning opportunities God has given you to grow and mature. I pray that you will be able to straighten your mind up and make a fresh start after being distracted during the summer vacation. It will take time to adjust to the new semester, and I encourage you to spend the first two weeks sober and faithful to your classwork. I am looking forward to seeing new students come to church this semester, and I pray to the Lord that He will send us students who will become part of the Grace Church family, no matter how many there are. A new semester is a new challenge. There will be unexpected difficulties, but a new semester is also a new opportunity. I pray that you will use this as an opportunity to glorify God through self-improvement, relying on the Lord's faithfulness and goodness.
