하나님의 영광을 위한 언어 사용

찬양하기: 35장-큰 영화로신 주                                                                                                                                                        

기도하기: 오늘도 우리의 삶을 인도해 주신 하나님 아버지를 찬양합니다. 저희의 예배를 받아 주시고 저희에게 은총을 내려 주소서

말씀 배우기: 마태복음5:33-37을 함께 읽습니다: ³³ 또 옛 사람에게 말한 바 헛맹세를 하지 말고 네 맹세한 것을 주께 지키라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나 ³⁴ 나는 너희에게 이르노니 도무지 맹세하지 말지니 하늘로도 말라 이는 하나님의 보좌 임이요 ³⁵ 땅으로도 말라 이는 하나님의 발등상 임이요 예루살렘으로도 말라 이는 큰 임금의 성임이요 ³⁶ 네 머리로도 말라 이는 네가 한 터럭도 희고 검게 할 수 없음이라 ³⁷ "오직 너희 말은 “옳다” “옳다,” “아니라” “아니라” 하라 이에서 지나는 것은 악으로 좇아 나느니라.

주제: 하나님은 진실 하기에 우리는 그의 영광을 위하여 진실하게 말해야 합니다.

일상에서 빠질 수 없는 것이 말입니다. 우리는 숨 쉬며 살듯이 말하고 소통하며 살아갑니다. 그런데 개인적, 사회적 갈등은 말에서 촉발됩니다. 그러므로 바른 말 사용은 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않습니다. 바른말 사용의 궁극적인 목적은  하나님의 영광입니다. 어떻게 하나님께 영광이 되는 적절한 말을 할 수 있을까요?

먼저, 말의 문제는 마음의 문제인 것을 이해해야 합니다. 개역 성경 37절에 “악”으로 번역된 단어를 대부분의 영어 성경에서는 원어를 반영하여 “the evil one”으로 번역하였습니다. 이것은 거짓의 아비인 사단으로 이해할 수도 있고 마음의 악으로도 이해할 수 있습니다. 마음의 악과 언어는 연결되어 있습니다. 그래서 진실되고 명확하게 “예”나 “아니오”로 말해야 합니다. 그 이상의 말들은 악한 마음에서 나오는 사단의 언어를 따르는 것입니다.  

우리는 마음에 있는 것을 말로써 표현합니다. 마음에 가득한 것이 입을 통하여 흘러 나오는 것입니다. 예수님의 말씀입니다: “입에서 나오는 것들은 마음에서 나오나니 이것이야 말로 사람을 더럽게 하느니라 마음에서 나오는 것은 악한 생각과 살인과 간음과 음란과 도적질과 거짓 증거와 훼방이니”(마15:18-19). 이처럼 말을 통제하려면 먼저 마음을 통제해야 합니다. 잠언서 4:23 말씀입니다: “무릇 지킬 만한 것보다 더욱 네 마음을 지키라 생명의 근원이 이에서 남이니라.”  말 싸움은 결국 대화 기술의 부족보다는 마음의 갈등으로 인한 것입니다. 말을 절제하기 힘든 이유는 마음에 베인 습관이 근본 원인입니다.

이에 대한 해답은 그리스도의 복음입니다.하나님은 마음의 죄성으로 인해 죄와 사망에 매여 사는 사람들에게 복음을 들려 주십니다. 하나님은 그 말씀으로 죄인들과 소통하시려 하십니다. 그러기에 이들의 죄를 용서하기 위하여 죽으시고 부활하신 하나님의 아들을 구주로 믿고 마음에 영접해야 합니다. 하나님은 영접하는 자들에게 새로운 성품, 새로운 마음을 주십니다. 거듭난 마음은 마음의 죄를 늘 회개하며 싸웁니다. 자기 중심적이던 말은 하나님과 이웃을 사랑하는 말로 바뀌어 갑니다.

일상의 언어 생활에 변화를 경험하려면 늘 삼위 하나님을 의지해야 합니다. 첫째, 예수님의 보혈로 마음을 매일 정결케 해야 합니다. 정결케 하시는 보혈의 능력을 의지하여 매일 마음의 허영과 입술의 거짓을 회개해야 합니다. 둘째, 하나님의 말씀으로 마음을 매일 새롭게 해야 합니다. 매일 진리의 말씀으로 마음을 채우고 하나님의 사랑을 의지할 때 영혼에 새로움을 경험합니다. 셋째, 성령의 능력으로 마음을 매일 굳세게 해야 합니다. 성령의 임재를 의지할 때 마음과 입술을 통제하는 절제의 열매를 맺게 됩니다.

마음이 날마다 새롭게 되어 새 사람의 성품을 입고 살 때 우리의 말은 하나님과 이웃을 사랑하며 그분께 영광을 돌리게 됩니다(엡 4:23-24).

적용 나누기

1.      말 실수로 큰 아픔을 경험해 보신 적이 있습니까? 그것을 통해서 무엇을 깨닫게 되었습니까?  

2.     어떤 말을 할 때 무엇을 위해 내가 이 말을 하는지를 생각하십니까? 하나님의 영광을 위한 일상의 언어는 어떤 것인지 나누어 보세요.

3.     마음을 새롭게 하고 말을 고치기 위해 어떤 노력을 해 보셨습니까? 일상의 바른 언어 생활을 위하여 삼위 하나님을 어떻게 의지하고 있는지 함께 나누어 보세요.    

감사 나누기: 하나님께 감사드릴 것이 있으면 나누어 보세요. 예수님과 어떤 사귐 가운데 살았는지 나누어 보세요.

기도하기: 우리는 매일 마음의 타락이 언어의 타락으로 이어짐을 마음 아프게 목격합니다. 종종 그럴듯한 말로 우리의 마음의 흉측한 모습을 숨깁니다. 하나님, 우리의 진실되지 못한 마음과 언어 사용을 용서해 주세요. 매일 하나님을 의지하며 “이렇게 말하는 것이 하나님께 영광이 될까”라고 묻는 습관을 들일 수 있도록 도와 주세요.

Opening Prayer: Our heavenly Father, we praise you for guiding our lives today. Please, receive our worship and grant us your grace.

Lesson: Read Matt. 5:33-37 together: ³³ "Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.' ³⁴ But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, ³⁵ or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. ³⁶ And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. ³⁷ Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything more than this comes from evil.

Theme: Because God is truthful, we should speak truthfully for the glory of God.

We cannot but to speak every day. We speak and communicate with each other for living as we breathe and eat for living. By the way, our personal or social conflicts arise from our speech. So, we can’t fully emphasize the importance of right use of our words. The ultimate purpose of speech is the glory of God. How can we use our words appropriately for the glory of God?

First, we must understand the issue of our speech is the issue of our heart. In v. 37, most English versions render “evil” translated in the Korean Revised Version as “the evil one”, reflecting the original language. We may interpret it either as “Satan the father of lies” or as “evils of the heart.” Evil of the heart is tied with the tongue. So, we must speak truthfully and clearly; if it is “yes”, we should say “yes” and if “no,” we should say “no.” Anything more than this comes from an evil heart, following the language of Satan.

By word, we express what’s in our hearts. Things that fill the heart spill out through the mouth. Jesus says, ¹⁸ But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. ¹⁹ For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander (Matt. 15:18-19). If you want to control your tongue, you must control your heart. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”

Above all, bickers arise primarily from the conflicting hearts of the two rather than lack of their conversational skills. The fundamental reason for difficulty in controlling the tongue lies in the habits deeply ingrained in the heart.

The answer to this problem is found in the gospel of Christ. God speaks the gospel to those living in bondage of sin and death on account of their sinful hearts. He tries to communicate with them through the Incarnated Word. They should receive the Son of God as their Savior into their hearts by faith, who died and rose again for the remission of their sins. God gives a new disposition, a new heart, to the recipients of Christ. A regenerated heart always repents of sin and fights it. It turns self-centered speech into speech of love for God and neighbor.

We should depend on the triune God to experience a change of our daily speech. First, we should cleanse our hearts through the blood of Jesus. Relying on the cleansing power of Jesus’ blood, we should daily repent of vanities of the heart and lies of the tongue. Second, we must renew our hearts through the word of God. We experience renewal of our souls when we fill our hearts with the truth of word and rely on God’s love. Third, we must strengthen our hearts through the power of the Holy Spirit. When we rely on the presence of the Holy Spirit, we can bear the fruit of disciplining the heart and the tongue.

We can use our words to love God and neighbor and bring glory to God when we get our hearts refreshed daily and put on the nature of the new man (Eph. 4:23-24).         

Application

1.      Have you ever experienced a great pain due to a mistake of your words? What have you realized through such an experience?   

2.     Do you think of why of them when you speak such and such? Share your thoughts on what kind of your daily speech glorifies God.

3.     What efforts have you made to renew your heart and change your tongue? Discuss with each other how to rely on the triune God for right use of daily speech.   

Praise Sharing: If you have any praise, please share it with the family. How have you walked with Jesus today?

Closing Prayer: We sadly witness corruptions of the heart daily beget corruptions of the tongue. We often conceal disfigurations of the heart with specious words. Please, God, forgive us our untruthful hearts and untruthful use of our words. Help us rely on God daily and make a habit of asking, “Are these words of mine glorifying God or not?”
