Jesus Our Divine Healer-1

And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Jesus said to him, "See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to them." Introduction: Sadly, diseases have been accompanying humans throughout history. This fact tells that pain and suffering are part of human existence on earth. The coming of Jesus into this world implies that He came into the midst of human sufferings caused by physical, emotional, relational, and psychological maladies. One thing remarkable is that the Bible contains a lot of healing stories. In particular, the Four Gospels are full of Jesus’ healing stories. And during the apostolic period, the apostles continued the healing ministry of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. Healing was a herald of the advent of the kingdom of God. Throughout history, humans, ancient and modern, have had desperate longing for perfect health or healing I can personally testify to this reality. I have had diabetes for 36 years. I know what it means to suffer due to physical illnesses and their complications. By the grace of God, I have been able to maintain my health well. I truly rely on God for life and death. Through this past week, my son Joel has been sick. Now, he is much recovered from his illness. But he suffered severe headache, body ache, fever, fatigue, lack of appetite, no energy, etc. I earnestly prayed for his quick recovery. He woke up in the middle of the night and cried for help out of severe headache. There was nothing but to give him some pain pills and plead with God for healing. I placed my hand on his head and asked God to clear his brain out of headache. At first, I thought he would be fine if he took enough rest from the tiring trip to Jacksonville, Florida. He took Tylenol, Advil, Zyrtec, etc. He had little food. He was unable to get out of his bed. Watching my energetic son wriggling in pain made me so concerned that I couldn’t focus on my work. I took him to Urgent Care and ER, too. Doctors said he had no meningitis or flu. The test results seemed to be fine. But he still had severe headache. Fortunately, his symptoms slowly began to improve. Before my son was ill, I was praying for various people undergoing life-threatening symptoms. Also, I have been praying for our church members and friends to recover health. One thing I have really wished to have through my pastoral ministry is a gift of healing. I know people are suffering from painful diseases. Hospitals are full of patients. Churches are full of patients. Often, I think of Jesus’ healing ministry. I wonder why the Bible has a lot of healing stories. Are they fables or factual histories? Are they intended to fool us to believe Jesus or to imbibe us with hope and faith in Jesus Christ? Each time I pray for healing in the church or hospitals, or pastoral visitations, I think of Jesus our divine Healer and ask Him to do something for them, like the father who brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus for healing. Today, everybody wishes to live a healthy life. People value health more than anything else in life. Health seems to take the place of God among some people. We can without doubt say health is one of the most important things in life. As far as health is concerned, God generally wants us to live a healthy and sound life by faith in Jesus Christ. Certainly, this doesn’t necessarily mean that we will live a life without any sickness. We may suffer a variety of illnesses throughout our lives. But what matters is we should rely on Jesus for health and healing because Jesus is our divine Healer. This is what we learn from healing stories of the Bible. Such stories in the Gospels teach us who Jesus is and what He does for us. Also, they teach us to rely on Jesus Christ for health and healing. In life and death, we belong to Jesus Christ. We live by faith in Him for all things in life, including our health. Let’s look into what to rely on for healing revealed in the text.
I. 예수님의 긍휼을 의지하라. Rely on Jesus’ compassion. What kind of a healer is Jesus Christ? In His day, the crowds wondered he might be a prophet with powerful message of God and healing power. They couldn’t separate Jesus from His healing ministry. From the beginning of His public ministry, healing occupied a major part of His public ministry. There were more than plenty of people suffering from all kinds of diseases. Matthew introduces Jesus’ public ministry as follows: 23 예수께서 온 갈릴리에 두루 다니사 저희 회당에서 가르치시며 천국 복음을 전파하시며 백성 중에 모든 병과 모든 약한 것을 고치시니 24 그의 소문이 온 수리아에 퍼진지라 사람들이 모든 앓는 자 곧 각색 병과 고통에 걸린 자, 귀신 들린 자, 간질하는 자, 중풍병자들을 데려오니 저희를 고치시더라 25 갈릴리와 데가볼리와 예루살렘과 유대와 요단강 건너편에서 허다한 무리가 좇으니라. 3 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. 24 So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them. 25 And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan (Matt. 4:23-25). Teaching, preaching, and healing constituted His public ministry. Therefore, disregarding Jesus’ healing ministry as if it belonged to ancient, superstitious period, is wrong. Since we can immediately turn to medical doctors for help, we may not want to rely on Jesus as our divine Healer. But we must keep in mind that every medical service and divine healing as well are the work of God. With this in mind, we must always rely on Jesus our Divine Healer for treatment, healing, and health as we live by faith in Him. Then, what kind of a doctor is Jesus Christ if we call Him that way? Foremost, Jesus is a compassionate Divine Healer. He doesn’t mechanically approach His patients. There are a lot of doctors today who try to disengage themselves emotionally from their patients. If they take pity on every case of their patients, they will be emotionally burnt out. As medical students, who used to be filled with compassion on their patients at first, spend much time learning to treat their patients, they begin to see them, not as poor patients suffering in pain, but as mere objects. They save their compassion for something else. Their pools of good feelings are easily depleted if they feel pitiful toward every one of their patients. They try to treat them as objectively and offishly as possible. Some greedy doctors see their patients as merely the sources of their incomes. Certainly, we don’t want to commit our sick bodies to such money-driven doctors. We want someone who is compassionate toward us. Jesus is such a Healer. Notice why Jesus extended His hand to touch the leper, which revealed in the parallel passage Mark. 1:41: 예수께서 민망히 여기사 손을 내밀어 저에게 대시며. “Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him.” Jesus took pity on the leper. So, He didn’t hesitate to touch the unclean person. He identified Himself with the poor man. This leper was dwelling in a quarantined place in a city. Even though he was outside a city, he couldn’t enjoy anything his city offered. He was isolated completely from his family, friends, people of his town. Of course, he must have suffered social isolation, contempt, and isolation. He was treated as subhuman or even dead. He had to warn people not to get near him, by exclaiming, “Unclean, Unclean. Don’t get close to me.” Each time he exclaimed it, he felt as if he was chastised by God. He must have felt miserable and sorrowful. Luke records the condition of leprosy as “full of leprosy.” William Barclay described what a leper looks like: “The whole appearance of the face is changed, till the man loses his human appearance and looks, as the ancients said, ‘like a lion or a satyr.’ The nodules grow larger and larger. They ulcerate. From them there comes a foul discharge. The eyebrows fall out, the eyes become staring. The voice becomes hoarse and the victim wheezes because of the ulceration of the vocal chords. The hands and feet always ulcerate. Slowly the sufferer becomes a mass of ulcerated growths. The average course of the disease is nine years, and it ends in mental decay, coma, and ultimately death. The sufferer becomes utterly repulsive—both to himself and to others.” The person full of leprosy in the text must have emitted rotting stench from his body. His face was disfigured. Maybe, he may have lost his fingers to leprosy. He looked like a disfigured monster, whom no one even attempted to give a glimpse at. He merely existed because he couldn’t die or didn’t die. He was like a decomposing corpse. He had no hope for restoration. His entire existence was a pain itself. People didn’t see him that way. They cursed and cussed at him. They mocked him. They were terrified before him. They wanted nothing out of him. All they wanted from him was that he didn’t get close to him. No one would feel compassionate toward him. On the contrary, Jesus felt his pain in the depth of His soul. The Greek word “splagchnizomai” refers to feel deepest compassion on the miserable. It is like a mother feeling deep compassion on her poor suckling. It is compassion arising from her deepest internal organs. When she feels it, her deepest internal organs are painfully intertwined or entangled. When He saw the leper, Jesus saw misery, pain of his life in his eyes. He saw loneliness, pain of social isolation, tears, in his face. He saw excruciating pain of a man made in God’s image in his disfigured face and hands. Instead of feeling dreadful before him, Jesus felt his deep pain as if it were His. Though people rejected, abandoned him to total isolation, Jesus welcomed him with compassion and extended His hand to touch him. He took His pain upon Himself. This is what He would do on the cross for His people. What a wonderful love this is! Those in Christ have been showered with such a love through the Holy Spirit. We are not left alone in our own suffering. Christ is always with us. Christ sees us in pain with great compassion. What are you going through? Do you have anyone who accepts you as you are? Do you have anyone who feel sympathy with you? It is Jesus who sees your pain as His own. It is Jesus our Divine Healer who have compassion on us in suffering. People may tend to avoid us if we give forth a bad smell out of our diseases. People may stand aloof as if they would be infected with our sickness. They are concerned about their well-being first. We have experienced it through the pandemic. But Jesus touched this leprous man, which was loving compassion. Jesus was unconcerned whether He would be ceremonially unclean. In fact, He is the Source of purity, holiness, and righteousness. The leper couldn’t make Him unclean. Rather, He cleansed the leper because He was a divine Healer. We have such a Lord with us. He truly cares for us. He didn’t mind touching us even though we were so dirty with sins. Especially when we suffer illnesses, we feel lonely and painful. We feel miserable. We feel unworthy. We feel down. Our families and friends try to understand us and take pity on us. However, they can’t take our illnesses upon themselves, willing to be ill on our behalf. Pain of our disease is ours alone. No one can take it from us to suffer for us. But Jesus suffers not only with us, but also for us. The cross of Christ is the evidence of it. Whenever we feel painful, we must turn to Christ for compassion. Our friends and families may shun us. Jesus never shuns us. Rather, He embraces us with compassion. I remember Jesus demonstrated His love and compassion toward me. I had once been hospitalized 100 days. There was an elder in my church, whom I didn’t know before. But he visited me in my room every day, held my hands, and prayed God’s blessings upon me. I saw love in his eyes. I heard God’s love in his prayer. I felt warmth of God’s compassion in his hands. Also, I saw the same thing in my mother. My mother was busy farming during the summertime. But she brought me cucumbers picked in our field because cucumbers are good for diabetes. She stroked my head and face. She rubbed my swollen legs repeatedly, praying, “Let me take your diabetes so that you may be made whole.” She had prayed for my health for the rest of her life as if I had been ill because of her faults. She truly had compassion on her weak son. I experienced the Lord’s mercy from these people. This week, my son was sick, suffering severe headache and fever. I put my hand on his head and face, earnestly praying for healing. I felt compassionate toward him, while understanding the depth of my mother’s love for me and the greatness of the Lord’s love for us. Certainly, the Lord Jesus is the One whom we can trust for healing compassion. Not only should we rely on the Lord’s compassion for healing, but also we should…
II. 예수님의 흔쾌히 하시는 마음을 의지하라. Rely on Jesus’ willingness. Unlike some greedy doctors who refuse to or hesitate to treat Medicaid patients, Jesus is more than willing to heal the sick. Anyone who came to him for healing experienced His divine healing. But He didn’t do much for those who didn’t trust Him. His townspeople rejected Jesus as a son of the carpenter. Matthew records it this way: 54 고향으로 돌아가사 저희 회당에서 가르치시니 저희가 놀라 가로되 이 사람의 이 지혜와 이런 능력이 어디서 났느뇨 55 이는 그 목수의 아들이 아니냐 그 모친은 마리아, 그 형제들은 야고보, 요셉, 시몬, 유다라 하지 않느냐 56 그 누이들은 다 우리와 함께 있지 아니하냐 그런즉 이 사람의 이 모든 것이 어디서 났느뇨 하고 57 예수를 배척한지라 예수께서 저희에게 말씀하시되 선지자가 자기 고향과 자기 집 외에서는 존경을 받지 않음이 없느니라 하시고 58 저희의 믿지 않음을 인하여 거기서 많은 능력을 행치 아니하시니라. 54 and coming to his hometown he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?" 57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household." 58 And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief (Matt. 13:54-58). Surely, Jesus used people’s faith as a means for healing. But Jesus often performed healing regardless of one’s faith. Once, He healed the paralytic because of his friends’ faith. He used their faith as a means of His divine healing. One time, He healed the demon-possessed son suffering from epilepsy regardless of his faith or his father’s faith. His father simply brought his son to Jesus, without unwavering faith in Jesus. So, unwavering faith is not always necessary for divine healing. Though He uses our faith as a means of healing, Jesus doesn’t limit His healing grace only to people of firm faith. Therefore, the contention that we remain unhealed because of lack of faith doesn’t seem to be applicable to every case. What ultimately matters is not the extent of our faith, but the heart of Jesus. Our faith fluctuates, depending on circumstances. Surely, we must ask God to grant us unwavering faith. And we must recognize how trustworthy Jesus is as we study who Jesus is. Every miracle of Jesus indicates the deity of Jesus. It reveals His glory and power. It urges us to rely on Him. The case of the leper here teaches us to rely on Jesus’ willing heart. The leper came to Jesus and knelt before Him, imploring, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” It doesn’t seem that he was confident in the heart of Jesus. He must have heard about Jesus a prophet of God who went around to perform healings for people. He must have developed a certain amount of expectation that he could be cleansed by Jesus, but he was not completely certain that Jesus would be willing to cleanse such an unclean person like him. He was shunned, repulsed by people, including his family. The religious leaders condemned him as one cursed by God. He had been isolated from society. He should warn people not to get close to him. He didn’t want to make others ceremonially unclean. But he summoned his courage to visit this Healer who gained popularity among people. At his first encounter with Jesus, he expressed his respect to Jesus by kneeling before him and calling Jesus as “Lord.” Certainly, he didn’t want to be rejected by Jesus. Cautiously and courteously, the leper wanted to make sure whether Jesus was willing to do something for him. In a way, he was probably like the father of the demon-possessed epileptic who said, “무엇을 하실 수 있거든 우리를 불쌍히 여기사 도와 주옵소서.” “If you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us" (Mk. 9:22). The leper made a humble and honest request to Jesus. He was different from Naaman the leper who anticipated Elisha to come out to welcome him and do something for his healing. Surely, he wanted to be healed. There was nothing he could do for healing but to ask for it. He was counting in the fact he could be rejected, but he still humbly asked Jesus to cleanse him according to His good pleasure. Feeling compassion on his misery, Jesus stretched out His and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” Though the leper asks to see whether Jesus was willing to cleanse him, Jesus definitely set forth not only His willingness, but also His will to cleanse him. Jesus is surely willing to bring us healing. It is His general will for us to live a healthy life. Though we may suffer illnesses under His providential goodness and faithfulness, the Lord still wants us to live a good and sound life. The Lord works out good even out of our suffering. There are the things we never learn without suffering. We learn to be grateful, humble, and joyful through pain in life. So, diseases may be used in God’s hands to mold us according to the image of Christ. Nonetheless, it is Christ’s general will for us to experience healing and health in life. I have prayed the prayer of the leper, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” But I still have diabetes. Does this mean I remain unhealed because of lack of my faith? Maybe so, but it is unlikely. Because I can say along with Paul, “I am strong when I am weak.” Paul says, 7 여러 계시를 받은 것이 지극히 크므로 너무 자고하지 않게 하시려고 내 육체에 가시 곧 사단의 사자를 주셨으니 이는 나를 쳐서 너무 자고하지 않게 하려 하심이니라 8 이것이 내게서 떠나기 위하여 내가 세번 주께 간구하였더니 9 내게 이르시기를 내 은혜가 네게 족하도다 이는 내 능력이 약한데서 온전하여짐이라 하신지라 이러므로 도리어 크게 기뻐함으로 나의 여러 약한 것들에 대하여 자랑하리니 이는 그리스도의 능력으로 내게 머물게 하려함이라 10 그러므로 내가 그리스도를 위하여 약한 것들과 능욕과 궁핍과 핍박과 곤란을 기뻐하노니 이는 내가 약할 그 때에 곧 강함이니라.7 So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong (2 Cor. 12:7-10). My weakness certainly makes me humble before God and reliant upon Christ for all things. So, it is useful for my faith. It doesn’t weaken my faith. Rather, it strengthens my faith and keep my focus on Christ. Like Paul, I am grateful for my chronic illness because I see how God uses it for His glory and my good as well. At the same time, I still believe Christ is willing to give me healing. So, I rely on Jesus’ willing heart. I don’t need to twist His hands to do something miraculous for me. In fact, He has delivered from numerous moments of near-death by grace. Without His intervention, I wouldn’t be here to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. I can clearly testify to the willing heart of Jesus for His people. Some doctors are unwilling to offer treatments necessary for the patients because they don’t make enough money out of it or they don’t have sufficient medical skills. On the contrary, Jesus is more than willing to help the sick out. As He said, “I will, be clean.” We must trust Christ’s willing heart for us to be clean. He doesn’t want us to live an isolated life. He doesn’t want us to suffer forever without any reason and rhyme. Jesus never rejected anyone who came to Him for healing. A Syrophoenician woman asked Jesus to heal her demon-possessed daughter (Mk. 7:24-30). At first, He seemed to reject her request, but He was testing her faith to see whether she was truly trusting Him. Jesus marveled at her humble faith and cast the demon out of her daughter. We must not doubt whether Jesus is willing to heal us of physical, mental, or relational maladies or not. We can be assured of Christ’s willing heart for us. This doesn’t necessarily mean that all of our sicknesses will be cured. There are many faithful people who die of incurable diseases. They surely rest in Christ’s loving heart and so commit their lives and deaths to Christ. When we are sick, we must go and see the doctors for treatment and cure, as necessary. We may not be sure whether our doctors have compassion on us or not, willing to give us the best treatments. But we can be assured of Christ’s love demonstrated in His offering Himself as an atoning sacrifice on the cross. Christ is not only compassionate but also willing to help us out. Thus, He is our great Divine Healer whom we must trust in life and death.
Conclusion: I know some of you are suffering physical weaknesses and illnesses. In fact, life is full of pain. Living in such a reality, we have the High Priest who sympathizes with us. We may be shunned because of our frailties. So, we may not want to share with others what we are suffering because we don’t want to be seen weak losers. We don’t need to pretend to be strong before others. We don’t need to act like strong people before Christ. Jesus knows everything about us. Jesus has compassion on us even though all people try to avoid our weaknesses. They don’t want to be burdened with our weaknesses. But Jesus took upon Himself our infirmities. Matt. 8:17 says, 이는 선지자 이사야로 하신 말씀에 우리 연약한 것을 친히 담당하시고 병을 짊어지셨도다 함을 이루려 하심이더라. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: "He took our illnesses and bore our diseases" (Matt. 8:17). We must rely on Jesus’ compassion and willingness for our healing because He is our Divine Healer. Even though we may still suffer our chronic illnesses or we may experience divine healing, we still need to trust Jesus as our Divine Healer who have compassion and willingness for our willing. We must bring all our burdens to Him and rest in Him. Oswald Chambers said in his book Run Today’s Race, 나의 구조를 위한 믿음은 하나님께 대한 믿음이 아니다. 내가 구출되든 아니든, 믿음은 하나님이 사랑이시다 라는 신념을 나는 붙든다는 것을 뜻한다. 어떤 것들은 불 용광로에서만 배울 수 있는 것들이다. “Faith for my deliverance is not faith in God. Faith means, whether I am visibly delivered or not, I will stick to my belief that God is love. There are some things only learned in a fiery furnace.” Our weaknesses and illnesses should increase our trust in God alone rather than cast doubt on His compassion and willingness for us. A pastor in Korea was so afraid at first that people would find out he was suffering from panic attack. He was so concerned that people would regard him faithless. He is a full-time Christian minister. People expect him to be an example of faith. They assume he should be whole if he has faith great enough against panic attack. But later he found out a lot of good Christians are suffering from the same panic attack. He began to share his story with them. They have found courage and comfort in his testimony. Now, he tells people that God may heal us either through medicine or through miracle. We don’t need to be ashamed of our weaknesses or lack of faith when we have physical or mental weaknesses. Instead of feeling ashamed or isolated, we can rest in Jesus’ compassion and willingness. The author of Hebrews exhorts us this way: 14 그러므로 우리에게 큰 대제사장이 있으니 승천하신 자 곧 하나님 아들 예수시라 우리가 믿는 도리를 굳게 잡을찌어다 15 우리에게 있는 대제사장은 우리 연약함을 체휼하지 아니하는 자가 아니요 모든 일에 우리와 한결 같이 시험을 받은 자로되 죄는 없으시니라 16 그러므로 우리가 긍휼하심을 받고 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 얻기 위하여 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아갈 것이니라. 14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Heb. 4:14-16). Trusting Jesus as our Divine Healer is never in vain. Let us hold unto Christ for healing and health throughout our lives as we draw near to the throne of grace in time of need. Benediction: 24 여호와는 네게 복을 주시고 너를 지키시기를 원하며 25 여호와는 그 얼굴로 네게 비취사 은혜 베푸시기를 원하며 26 여호와는 그 얼굴을 네게로 향하여 드사 평강 주시기를 원하노라. 24 The LORD bless you and keep you; 25 the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; 26 the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace (Num. 6:24-26).
