믿음, 의, 사랑(Faith, Righteousness, and Love)

기독교는 믿음의 종교입니다. 믿음은 우리 크리스천들이 매일의 삶을 살아가는데 적용되는 중요한 원리입니다. 믿음은 보이지 않지만 여러 덕성, 태도, 행동에서 드러납니다. 믿음은 실천될 때 그 진정성이 확증됩니다. 실천되지 않는 믿음은 주차된 차와 같습니다. 믿음은 단순한 전시용이 아리나 실제 삶을 위한 것입니다. 앞마당에 주차된 고가의 화려한 SUV는 그 소유주가 부자라는 것을 시사할 수 있습니다. 하지만 몇 년 동안 타지도 않고 동일한 장소에 주차만 시켜 놓는다면 무슨 가치가 있는 것입니까? 그 실용성은 쓸모 없이 묻혀져 있는 것입니다. 우리가 하나님이 의도하신 삶을 위하여 믿음을 실천하지 않는다면 사람들은 우리가 하나님의 백성인 것을 모를 것입니다. 우리가 그리스도의 신자들이라고 사람들에게 말한다면 그들은 우리가 그리스도를 닮은 무엇인가를, 곧 의로움을 보여주길 기대할 것입니다. 사실, 우리는 믿음의 의롭다 함을 받는 복된 가르침을 세상에 전합니다. 우리는 좋은 소식, 곧 복음을 선포합니다. 이 복음은 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 말미암아 은혜로 의롭다 함을 받는 것입니다. 예수 그리스도는 우리를 사하기 위하여 십자가에서 죽으시고 우리를 의롭다 하시기 위하여 다시 살아나셨습니다. 하나님은 그의 보시기에 우리를 의롭다고 선언해 주십니다. 그리스도 안에 있는 우리를 보실 때 우리에게 전가된 그리스도의 완전한 의를 보십니다. 우리는 사람들에게 말합니다: “예수 그리스도를 믿으면 당신도 은혜로 의롭다 함을 받게 될 것입니다.” 믿음으로만 의롭다 함을 받는 것을 바르게 이해하는 것은 크리스천의 삶에 중요합니다. 믿음은 죽은 이론이 아닌 생명력이 있는 힘입니다. 믿음은 하나님의 정하신 수단으로 우리는 이를 통하여 그리스도의 의를 받을 뿐만 아니라 실 생활에서 의를 실천합니다. 믿음은 칭의와 성화에서 필수적입니다. 그러나 문제는 실 생활과 분리된 믿음입니다. 말 만할 뿐 일하지 않는 믿음은 죽은 믿음입니다. 많은 크리스천들이 어떻게 예수 그리스도를 구주로 믿게 되었는지에 대하여 말합니다. 하지만 예수 그리스도의 주인 되심을 존중하지 않습니다. 그분의 주권적인 다스림을 따라 살지 않습니다. 여전히 자신들의 죄악된 소원들과 생각들을 따라 살아갑니다. 예수 그리스도의 임재를 인식하지 않습니다. 하나님을 믿는다고 말은 하지만 이들의 믿음은 그들이 사는 방식에 아무런 변화를 주지 않습니다. 그렇다면 질문은 이것입니다: “당신이 하나님 앞에서 의롭다 함을 받는 그 믿음은 진짜입니까?” 구원의 믿음은 일하는 믿음입니다. 이 믿음은 사랑으로 일합니다. 바울은 말합니다: 그리스도 예수 안에서는 할례나 무할례가 효력이 없되 사랑으로써 역사하는 믿음 뿐이니라(갈5:6). 믿음은 교회의 벽을 넘어 우리가 일하고 자녀들을 양육하며 사업을 경영하고 공부하며 이웃을 대하는 등의 삶의 현장에서 역사합니다. 믿음은 사랑과 함께 자유롭게 일합니다. 사랑은 믿음의 명백한 증거입니다. 

Christianity is a religion of faith. Faith is a vital principle whereby we Christians live our everyday life. Though it is invisible, it is manifested in a variety of virtues, attitudes, or deeds. It is authenticated when it is practiced. If it is not practiced, it is like a parked car. Faith is not for a mere display, but for a real life. A parked expensive, luxurious SUV in the front yard may suggest the owner of it must be rich. However, if it stays in the place for years without being driven, what is its true worth? Its utility remains uselessly buried. If we don’t practice our faith for God-intended life, people will not recognize we are God’s people. If we tell people we are believers of Christ, people naturally expect us to demonstrate something of Christlikeness, that is, righteousness. Indeed, we preach the blessed doctrine of justification by faith to the world. We proclaim the good news, that is, the gospel, that we are justified by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, who died for the remission of our sin on the cross and rose again for our justification. God declares us to be righteous in His sight. When He sees us in Christ, God sees Christ’s perfect righteousness imputed to us. We say to people, “If you believe in Jesus Christ, you will be justified by grace, too.” Our correct understanding of justification by faith alone is vital in our Christian life. Faith is not a dead theory, but a vital force. It is a God-ordained means whereby we receive not only the righteousness of Christ but also practice righteousness in our real life. It is essential in our justification and sanctification. But the problem is found in faith separated from a real life. Faith that only talks, but not works is dead. Many Christians talk about how they have got to believe in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. However, they don’t honor the Lordship of Jesus Christ. They don’t live according to His sovereign control. They still live according to their sinful desires and thoughts. They don’t recognize the presence of Jesus Christ. Though they say they believe in God, their faith brings about no change in the way they live. Then, the question is, “Is it real faith whereby you are justified before God?” Saving faith is working faith. It works through love. Paul says, “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love” (Gal. 5:6). Faith goes beyond the church walls and works in a real setting where we work, raise our children, run our businesses, study, treat our neighbors, and so on. Faith is not bound by race, ethnicity, or secularism. Faith is freely working together with love. Love is incontestable evidence of faith.
