병 고침(Healing)

병 고침은 내가 가장 갈망했던 것입니다. 고등학교 3학년 때 당뇨병 진단을 받고 처음으로 이젠 죽는 구나라고 느꼈습니다. 그래서 병에 치유 받기 위하여 교회를 출석하기 시작했습니다. 그 와중에 예수님을 구주로 만났습니다. 계속해서 치유해 달라고 기도했지만 지금까지 저는 당뇨병을 가지고 있습니다. 첫 5년을 병 고침에 매달렸습니다. 믿음으로 다 나았다고 선포하고 인슐린도 끊었지만 병세만 악화될 뿐이었습니다. 약도 하나님의 선물이라 받아 드리고 당 조절을 하고 건강을 유지하는 쪽으로 생각을 바꾸었습니다. 저는 이렇게 36년을 당뇨병과 함께 살고 있습니다. 이제는 당뇨병을 삶의 일부로 받아 드려서 절망 가운데 살지는 않습니다. 병 고침에 대하여도 잊고 살았습니다. 물론 몸이 약하고 아플 때는 주님께 치유해 달라고 여전히 기도합니다. 하지만 당뇨병이 낮지 않아서 주님을 의심하거나 불평하지도 않습니다. 오히려 당뇨병 때문에 저 자신이 아닌 주님만을 의지하며 살려고 하고 있습니다. 사실 주님을 알게 된 섭리적인 계기가 당뇨병이었다는 것을 부인할 수 없습니다. 그 동안 병고침을 잊고 살았지만 복음서의 치유 기사를 읽을 때마다 병 고침에 대하여 다시금 생각했습니다. 교회에서 질병으로 고통 하는 분들을 볼 때마다 주님의 치유하심을 간절히 소원했습니다. 주님은 어제나 오늘이나 영원토록 동일하신 분입니다. 고대 사회에는 의료 기술이 발달하지 않아서 주님께서 그렇게 많은 치유의 기적을 행하신 것이고 현대 사회는 의료가 발달해서 주님의 직접적인 치유가 필요 없다고는 말할 수 없을 것입니다. 복음서의 치유 역사들은 예수님이  하나님의 아들 그리스도임을 증거하는 것이었습니다. 그렇다 해도 현대 의학이 발달했으니 예수님의 치유는 더 이상 일어나지 않는다고 누가 말할 수 있겠습니까? 과연 오늘날 신자들은 병 고침을 위하여 기도해도 되는 것일까? 야고보 사도는 서로 병 낫기를 위하여 기도하라고 권면합니다(약4:14-16). 병 고침을 위하여 기도한다는 것이 현대 의학의 도움을 거부하라는 말은 절대로 아닙니다. 현대 의학의 발전도 하나님의 주권적 다스림 아래 있습니다. 그렇기에 현대 의학의 도움을 믿음으로 받아 합니다. 동시에 현대 의학이 고치지 못하는 난치병, 불치병을 포함하여 모든 질병에 대하여 믿음으로 주님의 사랑과 능력에 호소해야 합니다. 주님의 뜻이 이루어지도록 기도해야 합니다. 종국에는 치유를 받든 못 받는 주님의 절대적 선하심과 신실하심을 의지해야 합니다. 그리고 질병으로 하여금 주님과의 관계를 무너뜨리게 하긴 보다는 돈독하게 해야 합니다. 우리는 죽든지 살든지 주님의 것이기 때문입니다. 분명 주님은 우리를 사랑으로 고치시는 분입니다. 우리는 이를 의심하지 말고 진심으로 믿어야 합니다. 

I used to long for healing. When I was a high school senior, I was diagnosed with diabetes. For the first time in life, I felt like dying soon. So, I began to attend church for healing. In the course of time, I met with Jesus as my Savior. I continued to pray for healing but I still have diabetes. For the first five years, I was focused on healing. I declared myself to have been healed by faith. I quit taking insulin. But my condition got worse. Changing my mind, then, I regarded medicine as a gift of God and tried to keep my health by controlling my sugar levels. I have been living with diabetes for 36 years. Now, I don’t live in despair, accepting diabetes as part of my life. I live in forgetfulness of my diabetes. Of course, I still ask the Lord for healing when I feel weak and sick. But I neither doubt nor complain against the Lord even though I remain unhealed of diabetes. Due to my diabetes, I rather try to live in reliance on the Lord alone rather than myself. In fact, I can’t deny God’s providence under which I came to know the Lord through diabetes. Though I have forgot about healing, I would come to think of healing each time I read healing stories in the Gospels. I would long for divine healing every time I see people suffering from sicknesses at church. Jesus is the same yesterday, and today, and forever. We can’t argue that we don’t need divine healing in this modern world of advanced medical knowledge though the Lord performed a lot of healing miracles for ancient people who had no medical benefits. Healing miracles in the Gospels offer the evidence that Jesus is Christ the Son of God. Nonetheless, who can say that Jesus’ divine healing no longer occurs on account of modern medical developments? Should believers today really pray for divine healing? The apostle James exhorts us to pray for one another that we may be healed (James 4:14-16). Prayer for divine healing never implies that we are to reject modern medicine to receive divine healing. Modern medical developments are under God’s sovereign control. So, we must receive them by faith. At the same time, we should appeal to the Lord’s love and power by faith for all diseases, including incurable diseases modern medicine can’t cure. We must pray the Lord’s will should be done. Whether we are healed or not, we must rely on the Lord’s absolute goodness and faithfulness. And we must let our maladies deepen our relationship with the Lord rather than destroy them. It is because in life and death, we belong the Lord. Certainly, the Lord heals us by love. This is what we must unquestionably believe with all sincerity.
