노회 모임을 다녀와서(Having been to the Presbytery meeting)

저와 김영훈 전도사님은 지난 월요일인 10월 29일에 열린 제49회 미주고신 중남부 노회 모임에 다녀왔습니다. 모임 장소는 필라델피아 제일 중앙 장로교회였습니다. 저와 전도사님이 번갈아 운전하며 주일 오후에 올라갔습니다. 도중에 신순례 권사님 댁에서 하룻밤을 보냈습니다. 월요일 새벽 1쯤 도착하여 새벽 3시까지 그간 못 나눈 대화를 나누었습니다. 다음 날 아침 따뜻한 아침을 대접해 주셨습니다. 신 권사님께서 환대해 주셔서 좋은 시간을 보냈습니다. 우리 보내시면서 눈시울을 적시는 권사님을 뒤로 하고 필라델피아로 향했습니다. 중간에 톨게이트가 그렇게 많은지 처음 알았습니다. 도시는 참 복잡하고 비싸구나 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 시골 생활에 익숙한 우리에게 대도시 운전은 도전이었습니다. 월요일 오후 3시쯤 도착했습니다. 배가 고파서 점심을 먹었습니다. 나중에 교회에서 준비한 저녁을 또 먹었습니다. 모임은 7시 30분에 시작하였습니다. 먼저 노회장이신 최규태 목사님이 말씀을 전하셨습니다. 그리고 크게 4가지 안건을 다루었습니다. 그중에 하나가 그린빌 한인 은혜교회가 미주 고신 교단에 가입하는 건이었습니다. 왜 은혜 교회가 미주 고신 교단에 가입하고자 하는지 질문이 나왔습니다. 앞으로 나가서 답변을 했습니다. 전에 칼럼에 쓴 대로 믿음의 동지들과 교제를 나누고 함께 도움을 주고 받으며 하나님의 나라를 확장해 가고자 한다고 답했습니다. 반론이나 반대는 없이 은혜 교회 교단 가입 안건은 곧 통과가 되었습니다. 주님께 감사드렸습니다. 이젠 미주 고신 교단의 정식 멤버가 되었습니다. 우리 교회는 목회자와 장로로 이루어진 당회가 없습니다. 그래서 당분간 아틀란타에 소재한 늘푸른장로교회 담임 목사님이신 한충기 목사님이 우리 교회의 임시 당회장 역할을 하게 되었습니다. 앞으로 이분의 간섭이 아닌 도우심을 받게 될 것입니다. 저는 내년 2월에 고시를 치르고 미주 고신 교단의 정회원이 됩니다. 김영훈 전도사님은 내년에 강도사 고시를 보고 강도사로 섬기게 될 것입니다. 앞으로 미주 고신 교단의 정식 교회로 성숙하고 성장할 수 있도록 기도 부탁드립니다. 

John Kim and I have been to the 49^th Presbytery meeting, which was held on last Monday, Oct. 29. The meeting took place in the First Central Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. Sunday afternoon, John and I took turns of driving up to the destination. On the way, we had to spend a night in Mrs. Watkins’ place. We got there around 1 o’clock and had a chat with Mr. and Mrs. Watkins until three o’clock. She served us warm breakfast next morning. Due to her hospitality, we had a great time with them. While sending us off, she got her eyes filled with tears. While leaving them behind, we took off toward Philadelphia. Unexpectedly, I came to realize that there were a number of tollbooths. I thought a city life is busy and expensive. I was used to driving in local, rural areas. Driving through a metropolitan city was a challenge. At 3 o’clock in the Monday afternoon, we finally arrived at our destination. Being hungry, we ate lunch. Afterwards, we had dinner provided by the hosting church. The Presbytery meeting began at 7:30. The Rev. Gyu-Tae Choi, the Moderator, began the meeting with prayer and preached the word of God. There were four agendas they dealt with. One of them was our Grace Church’s petition for joining the Korean Presbyterian Church in America. One of the members raised the question why the Korean Grace Church of Greenville would be part of the denomination. I had to go forward and answer the question. As I said in my pastoral columns, I said to them that the KGCG would share fellowship with other believers and churches, help each other, and fulfill the calling of the expansion of the kingdom of God together with them. Our petition was immediately granted without any question or opposition. We thanked the Lord for that. Now, we are an official member church of the KPCA. Currently, we have no session that consists of a pastor and multiple elders. For the time being, so, the Rev. Choong-GI Han will serve as our moderator, which means he will be not interference, but help to us. I will be taking a test to be a full-fledged member of the denomination next February. John will be taking a test to be a licensed preacher next year. I would ask you to pray for our Grace Church to grow in maturity and number as an official member of the KPCA.
